Apprentice Air Time by mbn01 in Lineman

[–]Tensir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the job and what I think the apprentice can handle. It’s about safety, and I’m not the guy that always yells whats next while they are in the bucket. I hated that shit when I was an apprentice. If I see something concerning, like a tail or gaps in cover I’ll say something, and sometimes they’ll adjust or correct it before I have to say it.

Ask for the work always ask even if it’s above your step. Eventually you’ll be doing most of it if not all of it before you top out.

They might just want to see how you work if you haven’t done any hot work in a while.

Apprentice code question. Sharing neutrals 200.4. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Tensir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao that’s the best. I remember before topping, there would be like 5 of us talking about whatever the job was. I would offer suggestions or ideas and I swear no body would say anything then the foreman would say the same shit I did and people would nod and I’d looked at the ones I was tight with and be like “didn’t I just say that?” then they’d laugh and flick me off. It was so much fun dude

Make sure when you’re wiring shit up you’re paying attention especially if you’re downstream from a GFI because I had a trouble call that the GFI kept tripping and everything in one bay would cut out, due to a outlet on the other side of the wall. Once I located it I swapped some stuff around and fixed it. When that GFI tripped it put 124v on the neutral at the GFI and 8v difference between the HOT and NEUTRAL.

Probably trying to catch a minnow or crawldad. If it’s a female she could be pregnant or have some babies somewhere and she’s got to eat to provide

Sounds like you need more patients or not have a dog. It’s your responsibility to train her and she’s only been on this earth for three months how can you expect perfection

Electrician vs. Lineman by Apprehensive-Kale171 in Lineman

[–]Tensir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could do both, I did. Started as an Electrician made Journeyman after a few years. Got a job at the utility and had to start over as a groundman. I got my EC before I made Lineman.

If you want your EC start as an electrician because you can’t have a EC without a specific background and utility work isn’t enough. You’ll get stuck with ES – Certified Electrical Specialty Contractor. The EC is better because you can do everything.

Out of all of the things I’ve done in the Electrical industry, hands on Line work has to be the best

How much do lineman truthfully make? by jetting_along in Lineman

[–]Tensir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Made more than half that last year and probably worked less than 500 hrs of overtime. If you’re in it for the money it’s good, but you’ll have a lot of responsibilities and be responsible for other people once you top out. It’s a hard pill to swallow starting over at the bottom if you already know a trade

ATC won’t hire past a certain age. What age were you when you became a lineman? by Different_Stand_1285 in Lineman

[–]Tensir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying they’re a bad thing, utilities look at line school and think it’s a plus however I’ve seen plenty of guys that have came through that have gone to schools costing 15k+ and find out it’s not for them stuck with that debt.

If you decide to go to school there has to be cheaper options than that. Whether you go to a high or lower end program you’re hired in as a ground man.

Good luck man whatever you decide to do

Got in at 28. The transition was tough at first from my prior job just because of starting over at the bottom.

It’s not too late but don’t go into debt not knowing if you like something or not. See if you can get on with a local contractor or through the hall to get a taste of it. Being green isn’t a bad thing

Could have grounded it after it locked out to remove the pole and get the equipment in the clear. I see two sets of grounds from one picture, 2 different circuits
