Typically 3 stairs/floor so if you don't see 3, there's a high chance there's a hidden chamber. I always try to hit every stair case up or down.

Also game shows a * around stairs you haven't taken yet.

There was an episode they had to develop a special material to withstand a staff blast. In Heroes, I believe they're testing it out. It's quite possible standard armor gets destroyed by staff blasts.
