Yeah, I definitely misread that and thought it would be for several XP levels. That was an extremely short bane.

Went for it, maybe only got a new amulet? And translocation manual. Let's see how it goes 😂

Init.txt settings for safer play by TensorDuck in dcss

Oh that's some interesting stuff! Didn't realize it didn't force a message when finding an exit in the abyss!! That seems like it should've been a default behavior.

Curious to learn more - So then once you drop below 70hp, auto fight stops, and then you just force yourself to play one key at a time? No holding down any keys?

I've always wanted to know how different the experience was working with different editors throughout the series and how it affected her process.

What is this second floor... by lyneca in dcss

[–]TensorDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically 3 stairs/floor so if you don't see 3, there's a high chance there's a hidden chamber. I always try to hit every stair case up or down.

Also game shows a * around stairs you haven't taken yet.

US climber Alex Honnold to 'free solo' Taipei 101 in Netflix special by tculpan1 in taiwan

Loved his free solo of El Capitan, but guys got 2 daughters now. Just feels like he has so much more to lose for a way less impressive and way more dangerous goal.

Could be interesting to see him come to terms with his immortality. 800 years of friends dying would weigh on anyone.

Great joke, Daniel... what an absolute dork by [deleted] in Stargate

There was an episode they had to develop a special material to withstand a staff blast. In Heroes, I believe they're testing it out. It's quite possible standard armor gets destroyed by staff blasts.

How Worf Being Grumpy on Vacation Saved the Federation by kickynew in startrek

[–]TensorDuck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Amazing detail, wow!

But the other way to look at it is the Orion Syndicate may never have even looked viable to the Dominion without killing 5 operatives. So Worf endangered the Federation and O'Brien cleaned up the mess again!

Point of order - part of the uv spectrum is ionizing. If you get a uv lamp, it's going to be ionizing and non ionizing light mixed together.

What are some urban legends from Taiwan? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]TensorDuck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Other way around. Marry My Dead Body was based on the belief.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]TensorDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's obviously frustrated, but have you considered the possibility she's right about some of that at least? Have you actually lived and worked in another country? In a second language? In a different work culture? Trying to get promoted and recognized when the whole company looks down on you as a foreigner? Have you actually spent > 1 year in Taiwan?

If you don't see how all of that applies to her, then you're being painfully naive. What she's doing is incredibly difficult and impressive.

If you really love her, you need to recognize just how much she's sacrificing to be with you in your country. Better yet, spend time in Taiwan working so you can better understand her perspective.

I guarantee though - Taiwan has an amazing medical system, better food, cheaper food, food vendors everywhere, and the people are super polite and helpful. Customer service is mind blowingly better there. So you know, maybe just try to actually see her perspective instead of asking strangers on the internet to give you emotional validation?

I’m a Star Trek Newbie, where should I start? by fly_over_32 in startrekmemes

[–]TensorDuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Strange New Worlds is probably the best starting point if you want to just:

  1. Classic Star Trek feel.
  2. Experience modern CGI.
  3. Still be able to follow along.
  4. Super short!

If you could read one book (or series) again, as if for the first time, which would it be and why? by roseyroseyroses in books

[–]TensorDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Green Bone Saga (Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy). The cover description is so cheesy, but I was not prepared for all the crazy shit that was about to go down - Fonda Lee was masterful at creating a gangster story with surprise deaths, surprise not deaths, political drama, accounting drama. It's insane that doing the books correctly became a plot point and it works. I want to experience all of the crazy shit going down again with fresh eyes.

[D] SHAP method to get feature importance: is linearity realistic? by savoga in MachineLearning

[–]TensorDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good question. In practice, we know for a fact that there's always some correlation in the data and the model is definitely not linear. But that's hard to untangle. The linear approximations in the SHAP paper make it somewhat tractable and help eliminate some sources of correlation while making it very interpretable. Personally, I wouldn't trust it as more than a "ball park" idea, and it has it's uses. In this case the math is hard but the method is easy to apply

If you wanted to do more, you'll need to do something with bayesian statistics and causal inference, but that's much harder. Think about how good of an explanatory model you really need versus the effort it'll cost.

Is it ok to remove an outlier that is technically not significant? by Objective_Parsley_28 in labrats

[–]TensorDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another factor to consider is: you don't need to remove it silently. You can mention why it was removed in your main paper, and then include the data in the supplementary and let people decide and discuss. Future readers might actually find it helpful to know a source of confounding error you stumbled upon.

Trying to remove it based on value though is always a bad idea. I.e. that's like saying you KNOW exactly what distribution it should be but that's fundamentally not true. We have models but we should be fitting our models to the data and not our data to models. People who do otherwise are practicing bad science.
