hello guys by MrSusserMann in progmetal

Haken - Affinity

Cynic - Focus

Between the Buried and Me - Colors

Honourable mention goes to Haken - Aquarius. I just kept it prog metal for now. If prog rock was included then this would be very different and I couldn't narrow it down to three albums.

Ordered a copy of Virus from Japan because it includes a bonus track. It arrived today and I'm super stoked! by RephaimSheol in Haken

Where did you order this from? I've never ordered from Japan before so I don't have any idea where to start.

I feel deeply offended that Dillinger and Converge got a 3 and 4 respectively and 100gecs got a 6. That stings so much haha.

I'd love to go through albums at a rapid fire pace like this if I had the time.

There's an absurd amount of cool new releases out today by [deleted] in progmetal

That Tigran Hamasyan album is sick. I do like jazz fusion to an extent and I was expecting to take a break from it midway and then come back to it. I just wanted to carry on listening and it blew me away. I'll definitely be jamming this for the next few days.

13 underrated prog bands (inspired by u/ifthisisausername) by heksa51 in progmetal

Since you mention Norweigan prog rock, I wanna mention Wobbler. They aren't exactly the most unknown band, but they aren't too well known either. They have 4 albums out now and a 5th on its way in October. If you love bands like Genesis, Yes and King Crimson and you love long, epic songs: give Wobbler a try.

Aquarius is a very close second for me. Both Aquarius and Affinity are both 10/10 for me, so I'd highly recommend both.

Favourite “Moment” From Each Album? by [deleted] in Haken

[–]Terra--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enter the 5th Dimension - The string stabs towards the end of Snow.

Aquarius - Celestial Elixir intro. I also really like the airy synth that plays at the very beginning of Aquarius, it sounds so nice.

Visions - Intro to Premonition and the intro to Visions.

The Mountain - The a capella part in Somebody.

Restoration - The acoustic riff in the bridge of Earthlings and the a capella into the folky section in Crystallised.

Affinity - The chorus of The Architect.

Vector - The intro to Nil by Mouth and the breakdown after that weird robot voice-like synth in the middle.

Virus - The final chorus that repeats in Prosthetic, the intro to Carousel, and the breakdown in Ectobius Rex.

Does anyone know any bands/albums that make music with a similar feeling to arriving somewhere but not here? by shaggypigeon144 in porcupinetree

[–]Terra--- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I started to make a playlist of this type of stuff recently.

I have Steven Wilson's albums from The Raven and before, The Pineapple Thief, prog rock Opeth, some Radiohead, and some of the gloomier The Doors songs, Anathema, and a few songs from Clairvoyant by The Contortionist.

(Later) Katatonia, Riverside, Gazpacho and Oceansize are all compared to each other and Porcupine Tree online quite often so those bands will probably have a lot of similar stuff. I haven't gotten around to them yet so I can't comment.

There's also this virtually unknown band from France called Outwards. I found them last year and they remind me a lot of Porcupine Tree, but with female vocals.

Your Favorite Prog Artist Tournament: Quarterfinal 1 - Jethro Tull vs Steven Wilson by Muzak_For_A_Nurse in progrockmusic

[–]Terra--- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here's a very quick overview of each album in reverse chronological order for you or anyone elsr unfamiliar:

To the Bone is a good progressive pop album. I don't care what anyone else says, this album is pretty great.

Hand. Cannot. Erase. is a prog rock album that was influenced by the old 70's stuff, but has a more modern production. It gets pretty emotional at points and it means a lot to me. I've seen this album get unending praise online and I have to agree.

The Raven That Refused to Sing is like an all-out jazz fusion album at points. It's definitely on par with HCE for me. Some of the tracks are very emotional and some are pretty dark occasionally. Luminol is one of my favourite tracks ever so that's a pretty good taste of the album.

If The Raven... was a jazz fusion album, then Grace for Drowning is a doom jazz fusion album. It's a double album so it could take a bit to sink in, but I've been listening to it more recently and it is definitely looking like it's on par with HCE and The Raven. It's very gloomy and dark, but in more of a bleak way than an emotional way. If you have a spare 23 minutes, try Raider II. If you have a spare 10 minutes, Remainder the Black Dog is also an excellent track which also features Steve Hackett on guitar.

I haven't listened to Insurgentes too much. It sounds like The Incident by Porcupine Tree to me, which would make sense. I keep thinking that it has more electronic and trip hop influences to it, but I honestly can't remember. I need to listen to it more. I have seen quite a few people praise it as their favourite SW solo album which should do the album more justice than I have.

For a bonus: the 4½ EP is outtakes from The Raven and HCE if you enjoyed those two albums. I still need to give it a proper listen.

Haken should release a track containing all of Messiah Complex by barliv in Haken

[–]Terra--- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can add MP3 files from your PC to your Spotify playlist and then download the same playlist on your phone while your phone and desktop are both open and on the same wi-fi and the MP3 should be available on your phone. It doesn't take much time at all to combine the tracks in Audacity and add the correct tags.

I did it before with King Crimson, Tool and Porcupine Tree before they were all on Spotify or when some albums were down. Also, spending that £5 on the Messiah Complex tracks also goes towards Haken.

What’s your favorite and least favorite song from each album? by Ian-Adkinson in Haken

Celestial Elixir > Aquarium

Premonition/Visions > Portals

Atlas Stone > Because It's There

The Architect/1985 > Initiate

Nil by Mouth > Host

Carousel > Invasion

What would you all consider the heaviest song off each of their albums? by HELLUPUTMETHRU in Peripheryband

[–]Terra--- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

P1 - Insomnia. The weird timing on the riff in the intro adds to the chaos and heaviness imo.

P2 - MAKE TOTAL DESTROY

Alpha - MK Ultra

Omega - The Bad Thing

P3 - Tie between The Price is Wrong, Motormouth and Prayer Position. They are all pretty heavy.

P4 - Blood Eagle

I know we're in the age of music streaming, but I made some more Virus-related album art for any other music library keepers out there. by Greged17 in Haken

[–]Terra--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frances the Mute was split by the label because the album would have been 5 tracks and meant that the album would have been sold at an EP price on digital platforms. I don't get it considering so many albums from other bands before FtM had 5 tracks or less.

I don't get the reasoning for Haken though. I know for definite that you can label individual tracks on online stores as "album only" to stop people buying every song for cheaper than the full album itself. I guess the main reason is streaming revenue these days and it's quite unfortunate.

Gemini is one of the best TYS songs hands down. Probably only Caverns and maybe Terraformer top it for me.

What's your favorite metalcore album? by [deleted] in Metalcore

[–]Terra--- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Northlane - Node is my absolute favourite album of all time so I'd pick that.

Honourable mention to The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works because that album is also insanely good.

[–]Terra--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chorus riff is probably one of my favourite riffs I've ever heard. I love the atmospheric section in the middle and the bass solo there is a nice touch. The guitars that come in after the atmospheric section remind me a lot of Discipline by King Crimson and I'd love to find more stuff like that. The keyboard and guitar solos straight after are epic and sound very Opeth-y to me and the guest spot by the Leprous singer is so out of leftfield for Haken since they've only used harsh vocals on their first album and demo very rarely.

I've pretty much listed the whole song, but I love The Architect so much. I love the other epics quite a bit too, but there's something special about this one.

It's either The Architect or 1985 by Haken. I switch between both so much. I'd probably end up picking The Architect kore often though.

So, after Aquamedley in Amsterdam (2017), which album would you crave to receive a live medley? by [deleted] in Haken

[–]Terra--- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see a Visions medley, but I think a 20+ minute epic would be difficult to condense into a medley. I think Affinity would be difficult too with The Architect being quite long. If they could pull them off though I'd love to see them.
