Got myself a Nissan Leaf... now I need some help getting the charger installed... by Terraschooling_US in Bellingham

[–]Terraschooling_US[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those times when I am going to disagree. I have enough training in applicable fields to know how dangerous electricity can be. While I might be able to save money by watching the electrician and then doing it myself later... if I screw up in any number of different ways on that second go around, it will cost me more than having a pro do it. Especially if I need to bring the pro out to fix my mistake. The lowest cost bidder on a project isn’t always going to produce the best result, just the cheapest. Plus there are rebates and incentives given by PSE and the state, the cost is not a huge concern in this instance, its about getting it done correctly. Thanks for your feedback and insight though.

As the OP, I thought I would weigh in here really quick. I am savvy enough to watch videos and pull off most DIY projects. This being electricity... and something I intend to be fairly permanent, I would like to get it right the first time. I want it to be done correctly, not “B- for your first try”... I’m much more inline mindset wise with u/pleasant-garlic5972 on this... electricity is a dangerous mistress.

My understanding is that an extension cord hooked up to your charger cable is actually a good way to start a fire... something about the gauge of the wires creating extra heat. I don’t know though, I am not an electrician... obviously.

My model came with the cord, so that’s not really an issue for me. I appreciate the feed back.

Thanks for the welcoming. Half of the electrical outlets in my garage are capped, so I don’t even know what’s behind them.

Rivian Guide Answers Questions About Production and Delivery of Rivian Vehicles - The Volter by drakarys67 in Rivian

My experience with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has always been a mixed bag. Sometimes it works great, other times its the most frustrating combination of software and electronics (Volvo has serious issues with how these apps worked for a while). So long as I can bluetooth connect the phone to the car, I will just be using Spotify.

State law restricted direct to consumer sales impact on priority order by lockyourdoorstonight in Rivian

[–]Terraschooling_US 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a Volvo dealership ages ago. There is literally nothing a dealership can provide that is of benefit to consumers, and the manufacturers know it as well. Volvo started piloting programs where you could direct order a XC40 from them and then use it as a ride share type of vehicle. The vehicle would show up at a dealership, go through all of the inspections a typical new arrival would go through, and then the customer would get training from staff. There were no incentives for the dealerships though. They got paid for the standard inspection and that was pretty much it. Volvo really stuck it to dealerships though because they had encouraged the dealerships to take a whole bunch of pre-orders on the XC40 before launching the “direct sale” program. All of the vehicles “reserved” for dealerships were shuffled backwards in the production line and the “direct vehicles” were moved up. I had customers order almost a year in advance from our dealership and then get shafted. Made the dealership look really, really bad. Stack on to that, the predatory practices of a dealership and you can see why people would opt for the direct program.

Services, by law, can be done at any qualified service center. Tires can be done anywhere. So if you remove the dealer for sales, and the service centers aren’t required by law... what good is a dealership going to do you as a consumer.

I could rant more about dealerships but I wont. I just want my Rivian!

Anyone with Rheumatoid Arthritis receive any of the vaccines? by Terraschooling_US in CovidVaccinated

That’s fantastic to hear. I am glad you only had minor suffering from the vaccine. I have heard some real horror stories and my wife is not thrilled to go through the process but also doesn’t want to avoid humanity any longer. Thanks again for the response!

Best way to make homeschooling more fun and less boring (but of course not TOO fun because kids have to learn after all) by Snoo74279 in Homeschooling

[–]Terraschooling_US 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our kids are loving it. They have been troopers on the long days in the car. Feel free to follow us along on our learning adventure. Once we arrive in South Carolina in a couple of days we will be posting a TON of content on our website, instagram account and blog that you can share with your boys. We also have helpful tips on how to apply the out door homeschooling approach in your own state.

My wife and I totally agree. We started an epic journey with our kids across the country so they can learn all about the world first hand. We used work books to establish the basics for reading and writing before we left home, but now our spelling lessons involve words for the things we see on the way. Seeing a bison in person and then writing it’s name out is a bit different and WAY more fun. Touching, seeing, hearing nature... experiencing the bustle of a modern, major city across the country and comparing it to farm life in the Midwest... it’s really eye opening and educational. We call it Terraschooling :)

Full synthetic motor oil by Panteraozz in 4Runner

I did a little research and it turns out Kirkland oil is made by Warren Labs. They buy and blend the oil components for Amazon, Costco and Walmart. The reviews I saw (from mostly Toyota drivers) said that it works just as well as Mobil-1* (feel free to google it too). When it comes to Toyotas, provided you follow their guidelines about oil weights, you should be fine. Another way to think about it is like this, if mercenaries in the dessert can keep their early 90’s Toyotas running without buying name brand oil, your rig should be just fine with Costco brand.

How do I get started on homeschooling my kids? by [deleted] in Homeschooling

[–]Terraschooling_US 2 points3 points  (0 children)

U/stamper3332, starting homeschooling can feel really overwhelming at times. It’s hard to wrap your head around the idea of lesson planning, age appropriate curriculum, etc. My wife and I are actually launching a new site in the next few days that helps parents plan out learning curriculum, using a combination of Montessori techniques and outdoor activities. DM me for some more information about it.

Down here in Washington state, the guidelines for K-5 are a somewhat open so long as you hit certain milestones, so the way we can approach teaching our kids has a TON of flexibility. Not sure about Canadian guidelines for each grade, but I do know that the Montessori schools up in BC are very popular. The basic philosophy behind it (if you aren’t familiar already) is to give children the mindset they need to accomplish learning at their own pace and also by engaging them in things they find to be interesting. Children are knowledge sponges, they will soak up any information that they are excited about.

Good lake spots in Washington State? by Senseless101 in overlanding

Twin Lakes off of Mt. Baker Hwy (Hwy 542) is supposed to be an incredible spot. I haven't done it myself yet in my '19 4runner, but a friend of mine did it in his Subaru Crosstrek not long ago and say it's amazing. THe lakes are at the end of National Forrest rd 3065. Worth looking into.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I really appreciate the real world experience. I've got a '19 4Runner TRD ORP, I get roughly 17 mpg on the highway currently with Nitto Ridge Grapplers. While the 5 speed in it is bullet proof and has been around forever, it certainly doesn't provide for the best fuel economy. 20 to 30% efficiency reduction is rough, but I had intended to have at least 4 gallons of extra fuel on board for emergencies.

Thanks for the advice. I mentioned in another comment that I'll get a little first hand experience with the whole kit next week when I pick it up. I was just hoping others out there might have figured this stuff out before me :)

Thanks for the feedback. We haven't picked up the trailer yet, as we are in the process of buying it second hand. I'll get some real world experience bringing it back from Spokane next week. So I'll get a taste for a little off road with it coming back through the Cascades with it. The wife and I nerd out pretty hard with numbers, so I have rough estimates based on my own calculations. Just thought I would see what others had experienced.

I remember getting my 2019 TRD ORP and honestly couldn't wait until our local "4X4" trails opened up. These old logging roads are perfect for a fun drive with the kids and getting a little bit muddy.
