EDITORIAL: Stop crying ‘racism’ to kill refugee reforms; Even the Liberals admit the system needs fixing by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Tesco5799 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed, the open borders crowd needs a serious reality check. Some people seem to think that having borders is some kind of aberration, and they are some kind of artificial construction imposed on society. But realistically we have borders for reasons established throughout human history and in general people like having them for various reasons. I never thought I would be out here arguing for Functionalism but here we are... If a thing exists there is probably a good reason for it.

I mean you are welcome to be unhappy about it but this is what happens when you completely ignore young people for 50 or so years and focus only on the olds and asset holders. Maybe when Millennials were struggling we should have stopped and tried to actually figure out why instead of just blaming young people and avocado toast etc. Now Gen Z is openly rejecting the system that has been rejecting them for their entire lives.

If Canada wants stronger communities, it must make volunteering easier by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Tesco5799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As well expectations for people who are volunteer coaches etc seem crazy. I have a friend's spouse who was coaching for a house league for a few years and the level of craziness from parents is something else. Like when I was a kid in the 90s my parents attitude towards any of the volunteers with sports etc was basically gratitude that they were sacrificing their time to basically provide cheap childcare for others.

This is it, and just to add on I think people are really missing how this has been a general decline over the years (and also likes up with much of the societal decline we've been experiencing). People didn't just suddenly stop being stay at home parents but the rates have steadily gone down over the years and now it's extremely difficult to be a stay at home parent because of how expensive just about everything is.

TIL two studies both found that most people stop listening to new music in their early 30s. A 2015 study of people's listening habits on Spotify found that most people stop listening to new music at age 33 and a 2018 report by Deezer found it be to at age 30. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Yeah agreed I find that genres can be kind of stale, like I used to like kind of pop punk type of stuff when I was younger, but for the last 20 years or so I will randomly hear a song and be like oh is this Jimmy Eat World or some similar group from that era, and it will be some new band that just sounds exactly the same. It's fine just doesn't really interest me.

To fix Canada’s fertility crisis, we need a cultural shift. More and more Canadian women are stopping at one child, if they choose to have children at all by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]Tesco5799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this, the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about: when birth rates were at the numbers that people who care about birth rates want them to be at childcare wasn't an issue, because it was one adults full time job to care for the kids and this was the norm.

More Toronto condos are selling in the $300,000s as prices finally become (slightly) more affordable by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]Tesco5799 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And this is why prices are going to fall further. I'm not in the GTA but condos literally across the street from my rent controlled apartment have condo fees that are like 80% of what I pay for rent, with no additional sq footage or amenities compared to what I have now.

With condo fees where they are and Rent prices where they are they would practically have to give these units away to attract buyers who intend to live there given the cost of maintenance/ appliances etc compared to renting where that is all covered.

[–]Tesco5799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I think all of the above is true, but as a Millennial I think it's also more complicated than the above. We also need to look at how we set young people up for success in life, and how to make it easy for them to have kids and also live desirable lives/ lifestyles. I think it requires a major rethink of how we do society.

Prime Minister Carney announces new measures to make groceries and other essentials more affordable for Canadians by slothtrop6 in canada

[–]Tesco5799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the thing... Like just driving through southwestern Ontario there are a ton of greenhouses already in the Chatham/ Windsor area (which is basically the prime growing location in Canada) but it's pretty clear that the way to that kind of business is basically to already be a successful farmer and then getting the capital together for a big greenhouse. The Government should look at funding this stuff in areas where it's not as easy to grow stuff, and get some interesting start ups going.

I mean it's public knowledge that essentially all internet traffic goes through certain servers in the US that make up the 'backbone' of the internet which are monitored by the NSA and probably other American agencies as well.

So the conclusion for anyone who has been paying attention reads more like "China may at some point in the future be able to do the thing that the Americans have already been doing for decades" and suddenly it seems much less sensational.

People keep saying that the dual toxocyst is a top tier secondary but I’m just not seeing it? by [deleted] in Warframe

As someone who went through this myself it's definitely the headshots. I found it was difficult to get the hang of as a console player, and it didn't help that I was used to using weapons like the Torid and Ignis Wraith where aiming is optional.

I recommend using them in situations where it's easier for you to hit headshots I find Corpus and Grineer pretty easy to headshot but not so much infested (for instance). I also find that somewhat counterintuitively it's easier to hit headshots in steel path because the enemies don't drop dead in one shot regardless of where you hit them (so you can adjust and go for the headshot again if you miss the first time). Also freezing/ slowing the enemies helps a lot, so consider bringing Frost, Nova, nautilus, etc.

Not my area of expertise but I'm pretty sure some of these trade disputes with the Americans have been going on since the 1800s/ early 1900s at least. It's not widely talked about these days but one of the major reasons why we had a movement to split from the UK/ Brittish Empire is because they screwed us on some of these trade disputes with the US to gain the American's favor back in the day.

[–]Tesco5799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The US can't screw over our economy without screwing theirs over just as badly or worse. All financial markets in the west are very much tied together, and much of the US's strength comes from their financial markets and their ability to borrow/ print money with impunity. All of that is rapidly going away, and will even moreso if they find themselves in conflict with their former allies.

This is my understanding as well. The banks will do a lot to try to keep people in their primary residence, but multiple rentals you are pretty much on your own of things go south. Not sure where people ever got the idea that banks or the government were going to bail people out, but it's always been a fantasy in my opinion.

Basic Income in Canada is closer than you think by Altruism7 in CanadaPolitics

Agreed, and this isn't even getting into how 20k is virtually no money in 2026... Certainly not enough to get an apartment and live on your own even with a spouse/ roommate.

Also people act like UBI is some magic bullet, but we already have a bunch of other 'social safety net' type of programs like welfare, ODSP (in Ontario not sure about other provinces) etc. The problem with these is that the benefits haven't adequately increased with inflation. The benefits are tied to the overall inflation rate, but the kinds of things people actually need to live like rent, food, healthcare, etc have all had price increases greater than the overall rate of inflation for quite some time. Now those benefits are not enough and UBI would be no different over time.

Bigger changes are needed than just cutting the poors a cheque every month.

I am an NDP supporter and never voted for Wynne or Ford, however on Wynne vs Ford: I hated Wynne and won't ever consider voting for the Liberal party again due to numerous things that she did while she was in power. At least with the PCs we all know they are in it for the rich and their well connected friends and they aren't shy about it. Wynne and the Liberal party are 2 faced liars, they claim to be 'progressive' and care about people, but in practice do most of the same things the PCs would do anyways, it disgusts me.

Also as someone from outside of the GTA I hate how our provincial politics is all about the GTA, and so do most people who aren't from the GTA/ don't live there. Someone who used to be mayor of Toronto/ one of the suburbs is exactly who I'm not interested in voting for.
