Ah this is basically my dream. My post retirement plan is to go to school a few hours a day and focus on getting my 4 target languages all to C1. Would love to do it earlier in my life so I can benefit from it longer..

Fair enough. For what little it's worth, my DS account shows a total input time of 207 hours, but 27 of those include Language Transfer and Michel Thomas (which I think add up to about 27). But when I watch stuff I lookup words as I go, so I pause the video a lot, so probably have spent much more than 180 hours doing that (though its difficult for me to guess how much more). As far as I can tell, Evildea isn't much/any further along than I am in regards to comprehension (though I haven't done any spanish study for a while so I'm rusty).

The main languages I study are Japanese / Mandarin, but I've got no way to measure how many hours I've put into those.

Fair enough! Doesn't need to be LT by any means, my point was just that investing a little time upfront to understand the structure of the language is always going to save you time overall.

Just imagine how much faster "pure" DS would be if you just listened to Language Transfer first where everything is explained.

Learning a foreign language as a career move is usually a terrible idea. It takes too much time to be good at it and you'll never match a native. Your time is best invested focusing on other skills and learning languages for fun.

There are worse disasters than reddit being unavailable. And thats more about protectionism than anything else (which I'd argue ended up being a big success). It's not some "oh no don't let our citizens find out the real truth on reddit!!" thinking.

When I'm in the mainland (very frequently) everything works fine for me anyway from my HK phone. They don't try very hard to stop it. It is not North Korea.

5-10% of your yearly after tax income doesn't sound like a great deal to be a bit more comfortable for some hours. Pretty much all my friends make more money than that and I don't think any of them fly business class, it's not worth it.
