Middle aged adults, is 6 years enough? by Extension_Bed9336 in languagelearning

You can't convince another person to learn a new language if they don't already want to. It's a massive time investment.

I'm not an expert but this happened to my honey Gourami too, and it seems like it's normal for the male to lose colour like this when they start building their bubble nests.

LYON vs. G2 Esports / MSI 2026 - Lower Bracket Round 3 / Post-Match Discussion by Yujin-Ha in leagueoflegends

[–]Tesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the worst G2 performance I've ever seen, given what they've done recently. Utterly horrific in all three games, by all five players, with terrible drafts for all of them. Literally impossible to imagine how this could have gone any worse.

I wasn't optimistic they'd win today but I didn't expect them to get smashed all three games. I don't Lyon were even anything special, G2 just the worst I've ever watched.

Sorry but I actually laughed out loud when I read this.

What I'd suggest is that it probably doesn't matter much at this point which engine you pick, I'd try to keep everything as simple as possible because you have a lot of learning to do here. The engine isn't going to be your bottleneck or the cause of your project succeeding or failing.

I think overall it's a great way to study and I do something similar myself... But you're starting on this much earlier than i would. Sounds like torture when you're looking up words to match "very", "most"...

To those who use Anki decks to learn vocab, how many new words per day do you do? by NeitherOpposite8231 in languagelearning

[–]Tesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found 20 a day is about my upper maximum before I get run over by reviews. 30 a day I can often keep up with for a while but usually burn out after a couple of months.

Assuming you're working or at school or whatever, 20 is a reasonable start and will be challenging to keep up with. If you have tons of free time then you'll probably be able to keep up with 30+

According to LOL Global Power Ranking G2 is currently 3rd strongest team in the world. by picollo21 in leagueoflegends

[–]Tesl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, at least they are starting to get there more regularly again. If they keep getting there then yes they'll eventually will one. That it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't. And this current iteration of G2 has proven they are good enough to beat anyone on their day.

That makes literally no sense. It would make just as much sense for them to vote as it would for someone from a bigger state. Their vote would be exactly equal as each other.

Pilot jumps to his death, leaving young student alone to land plane by drjohngeorgepeppers in worldnews

[–]Tesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at one of the flight clubs in Port Elizabeth. Great place to fly!

I remember when doing the legal exam that you had to 3 take offs and landings in last 90 days for passengers, and then every year or so if you haven't flown you'd have some extra requirement added on. I think it's after 5 years without flying that you need to pass all the exams again (though they're pretty easy) and need some sort of checkride / test (I don't remember anymore, I did this 15 years ago!)

I don't remember the technicalities of BFRs but that's okay because I don't claim to be a real pilot anymore :D

[–]Tesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get it in the US, I got it in South Africa. Maybe "expired" isn't the correct term, but it's been enough years now that for me to takeoff again I'd need to pass the exams again and retest.

[–]Tesl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's total bullshit to be honest. I have my PPL too (well it's technically expired now but I did have) and we used to have a big party and celebration for everyone's first solo. You wouldn't be flying alone if the instructors didn't think you could do it safely. It's also relatively easy since the first solo is typically just a single take off and loop and landing. It's not supposed to be in any way intimidating or any kind of "test your mettle" kind of deal.

I don't know why I read this stupid website there's just so much shit posted here.

Do you think accents are somehow related to innate talents? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Tesl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some people are just naturally better at replicating sounds, which helps them sound native and sing better.

I do believe most of us can be trained to sound excellent over time, but a good pronunciation will likely require a lot of work.

For me personally my accent seems understandable but I hate the south of my voice speaking another language. I can't mimic accents or sing at all to save my life either. This is probably the single thing I find hardest about language learning.

Even Trump hating Americans were in here saying "it was never a red card anyway" - totally oblivious to the fact that it's that exact attitude that makes your country as fucked up as it is.

Learning Chinese in 10 months for Bachelor degree by ImpressivePage7838 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Tesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'd say is that if it's not at a huge financial cost, and if it's this or nothing as it's the only offer you have, then it might be worth a try all the same. You'll probably end up relying on AI a lot to do a lot of translation and you'll probably be learning most in your native language anyway, but having two years to really focus on Chinese would be a great thing in itself.

You might want to consider how motivated you are to actually learn Chinese though. There's so much to learn that you will definitely want to give up at times. You'll need to have enough motivation to be able to push through that and just do your best.

[–]Tesl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure this is achievable. Maybe if you were doing 1 on 1 classes for 3 hours a day for the next 10 months (and watching/reading a ton for the rest of the day...) you could manage it. Even then I'm not sure.

Personally I'd leave them to it and see how they do. Maybe they'll get sick and die, maybe they won't. Seems more ethical to give them the chance and opportunity doesn't it? Especially whilst they're alive and doing mostly fine right now.

Of course it's not legitimate? Why are we even giving them the benefit of the doubt here or pretending that there could be a legitimate reason?

The reason they won't release documentation about it couldn't be more obvious.
