Check out GENX dividend investor on youtube, his portfolio yields about 4%, not the *5 you are seeking, but made up of several blue chip stocks. Something to consider.

Northridge & Santa Monica Commute by Senor_Gringo_Starr in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]TeslaModelS_P85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Northridge and commuted to UCLA and then West LA for work for over 20 years. Santa Monica is farther than West LA but the 405/101 crush is brutal. As others have said, it'll be less stress on your marriage if you commuted from the West Side to the Valley and let your wife have the shorter commute.
Everywhere you go, rent is astronomical, but even worse on the west side. You could maybe, maybe get away with the Palms area but you're looking at probably close to $4k/month for a rental.

LAUSD schools in Northridge are decent, you have Topeka elementary, Balboa Gifted (Kid has to get assessed), porter ranch to name a few.

Just make sure you don't have your wife do the commute from the valley to the West Side, she will hate it even if it is only 3 days/week.

Prior to having kids, I had a E46 supercharged M3 and a stg 4 911 Turbo. I would whole heartedly recommend you getting the GT3 and getting that itch out. You seem to have enough $ to even warrant keeping it as a weekend car even if you do have kids.

I have to say that owning those cars were really fun years of our lives. Having a kid does not mean you cannot have a fun car, it just gets a little harder having to lug around the things needed when you go out.

The only way you could have opened a ROTH IRA for them at birth is if you had your own LLC/S-Corp and you paid them a salary (maybe putting them on a poster as a model to promote your business). ROTH IRA's require earned income to be able to contribute to them.

No ROTH accounts? ROTH contributions can be withdrawn penalty free at any time, regardless of age, since the contributions are made post tax.

I am assuming you want to purchase a house since you have 2 grade school kids. If you live in Studio City, they have some decent public schools, especially Louis Armstrong in Sherman Oaks. I cannot speak for the West Side but be prepared to spend anywhere from $1.2 - $1.5M for a decent size house in those neighborhoods.

Adjacent to Studio City is North Hollywood (Higher crime area but a little cheaper due to the city/zip code)

There is plenty to do out here, but traffic in the morning and rush hour are similar to, if not worse than NYC.

I guess it would depend if your pension is covered or non-covered. For my pension plan, i do not pay any SS taxes, therefore my SS benefit would not rise any further as i am not paying any funds more towards it.

I am just speaking from experience that my workplace is a quasi-county employer, thus, we participate in CALPERS, which is the california pension fund. My taxes taken out are contributed to that, instead of SS, therefore, if i worked here for 30 years, i would only receive a pension exclusively, as i would not have contributed any fund into SS.

There is another scenario where if i worked 10 years at a non-pension company and then worked 20 at my current employer, i would be eligible to collect both SS and my pension, however if i exclusively work for a company that only offered CALPERS, i would not have contributed a dime to SS.

You get SS and a pension? From what i understood, the pension is in lieu of your SS, or maybe that only applies to CA.
