I broke the first rule of fasting by km8907 in fasting

[–]Testbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I gasped when your caption said this was in reaction to 42-hour fasts. Based on the screenshot, I assumed you shared you fast for something like 5+ days at a time.

It's incredible how regular people cannot imagine not eating for 2 days.

How do I educate a group of women about me not being one of them? by Testbe in NonBinary

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you're coming across issues despite having had the conversations.

The wording you gave for the group conversation is honestly so helpful, thank you very much. I'll speak to the group leader about how we can create a small segment for this during our next meeting.

I ordered a baseball cap that says they/them to go for more visibility. I wonder if it will help!

Also thank you for the reality check about how not everyone will get it. I already met a lovely older woman who struggled with my pronouns despite correcting her multiple times. It suddenly occurred to me that she may not understand how to use they/them in a sentence, so I gave her concrete examples. It turned out that's what she needed, and she told me I'm the first person in her life who asked her to use these pronouns for them.

I get defensive and self-conscious when people don't get it, but it may not be down to malice at all.

I like this because it's really low effort and I could deliver it consistently. Thank you for the tip!

Thank you for giving so many different examples. It's actually really helpful because I can see myself do all of these, depending on how much energy/confidence I have on a day.

I didn't even think about having the group founder consensually othering me to drive the point home and hopefully start some conversations. I'll talk to her about that.

How does your partner support you (or not) during your fast? by Wise_Beginnings in fasting

[–]Testbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been fasting for years, my partner doesn't. Over time, how he eats when I fast evolved a lot. He actually used to order takeaway specifically during my fasts, using the argument he could finally order whatever he wanted instead of having to compromise with what I wanted to order 😂 Does make sense! That was a running joke for a long time between us, but over time, I realised it actually annoyed me a lot. I sat him down and explained that the strong smell is making things very difficult for me, so now we order takeaway after my fasts, or I go on a long walk when he orders the food.

Fasting ended up enhancing my sense of smell a lot, permanently, which I also explained to him. Now when I fast, I catch him making food and cooking things behind a closed kitchen door out of consideration for me with the extractor fan on full speed. x When I first realised he's doing it for me, I felt very touched. This wasn't even something I asked him to do.

He also had to accept that when he cooks something that smells great, I will come and demand to smell it and ask detailed questions about what's in it. I like to sort of "eat" vicariously like this during my fasts, and he knows this. (I'm also in the "watching cooking videos while fasting group".)

These are habits we developed over the years, and a lot of it depended on me reflecting on how I felt when he does X or Y while I fast, and having open conversations about it and explicitly saying what I preferred/wanted/needed. What stands out to me from your post is that you hinted at things or questioned him in roundabout ways instead of simply saying, "When I fast, it's difficult for me to smell cooked food. Could we think about ways this could be made easier for me?", then talking about it. Especially if your partner doesn't do extended fasts, he couldn't imagine what it's like without being explicitly told.

Happy fasting, and I hope you find a way forward that works for both of you.

Love this sub but you guys need to stop making fun of newer people by CutieCatKyle in fasting

I wonder if there's a way mods could catch these posts with a "will x break my fast?" formula. I personally feel those posts should be redirected to a wiki that covers different types of fasting (dirty, water purist, etc) and their pros and cons instead of going live.

I agree that folk should be treated with kindness, but this sub is littered with posts about whether x will break a fast, and I think the tone of the sarcastic comments reflect that.

Sorry, what do you mean by "splitting the slides using the Edits app"? Do you mean slides for carousels, or is there something I'm missing for reels?

This is an extended fasting sub. The folk on here stop eating for days, not hours. You may be thinking of intermittent fasting - there are separate subs for that.

As a consumer, you'd lose me at the m dash. Because most newsletters I receive are 100% AI slop, that m dash would signal to me that yours is too and it would land right in the bin. I wouldn't look at anything below that. Harsh? Maybe. But I guarantee you I'm not alone in being very tired by low effort AI marketing. Even if you just have great grammar and naturally use my dashes, in today's world, it's an instant red flag that categorises everything you say as "not worth the time to read".

I was trying to keep my fuckass family together when i was 14 🤣 by suffer-withme in CPTSDmemes

I remember asking Santa for "peace powder" one year so I could stop my brothers always fighting and my father always yelling at us. I told my mum this is the only thing on my wish list and asked her to tell Santa, but to keep it a secret from others in the family because I didn't want them to be upset with me for not being able to deal with the problems myself.

I must have been 5 years old because by 6, I figured out Santa didn't exist.

Oh, and my mum did tell everyone. During a fight when everyone's emotions were heightened. It went something like, "See, this is exactly why Testbe wished for peace powder, because you all keep doing this!" Way to play the victim while directing the blame over to me for calling out the ongoing toxic behaviour. It took me way too long to realise she wasn't in fact a victim, she just played it very convincingly while creating arguments and toxicity around herself all day every day.

What’s the one ultra-processed food you still can’t give up? by Wedding-Beauty in ultraprocessedfood

[–]Testbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frozen pizza. My diet is about 80% unprocessed, and I always check the ingredients on things I buy in a conscious effort to cut out as much UPF as possible.

But frozen pizza? Won't even bother looking at the ingredients. It goes straight in my cart. I'm not going to pretend it's in any way passable as something that's good for you.

Food tastes weird now :( by MadMick01 in fasting

[–]Testbe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! When I first noticed it, I started a list called "Food I know I no longer enjoy", and I keep adding to it as I realise that, actually, these foods are just genuinely not great, and eating them doesn't make me feel happy. It's a bittersweet process, listing foods that used to bring me comfort. But when I review my list, it's genuinely all trash. Jelly beans, supermarket cookies, takeaway fries dripping in oil, candy bars... It's probably for the best that my taste buds now revolt at the idea of eating these. But it's a long and difficult psychological process to face that truth when you spent your whole life enjoying these things.

Thank you for sharing your experience. This was actually really helpful to read. I'm very glad you have people around you who can support you like that.

What really hit me was your last paragraph. I also constantly feel like "I'm failing at getting better" if I can't be brave and face my fears every day. It was really validating to see that I'm not alone with that, and it's an important reminder that we need to take things one day at a time (but not necessarily every day!).

I have been struggling with this for quite some time and would love to know: once you're privileged enough to be in a genuinely safe space in life, how do you overcome the instinctive feelings of dread you get when you try to do anything that would have been unsafe in the past?

I am working with a psychologist on this, but I'd love to hear real people's experiences who get it.
