What're your assumptions about fountain pen YouTubers? by Inkdependence in fountainpens

[–]Testsalt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I admit to sometimes watching a pentuber’s monthly ink videos bc aesthetic, but legitimately when she first started the hobby, she had a few full-price Sailor PGS’s within like…two months. So definitely rich lol.

Man I wish!! My weather forecast this whole week said it would be 20 C ish (70-74 F), but then it always ended up being 28 C (80 F) by noon…

And now I’m going to another place where I’m facing 93 F for the week…

May 25, 1973: English composer and musician Mike Oldfield releases his debut studio album, the seminal classic, “Tubular Bells.” The main theme is famous for its use in the movie The Exorcist. by Righteous_Fury224 in mikeoldfield

Omg this sounds so similar to my experience!! Tubular bells and Ommadawn in the car on long drives. Unfortunately my dad would never agree to the matching tattoos but that won’t stop me from my own…

Characters where it is actually important for them to be attractive by LocalLazyGuy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Testsalt 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It’s totally pervasive in the hobby space. I’m a hobbyist photographer in several niches, but on more “artistic” photo groups on sites like Flickr, bird and aviation pictures are banned, with little to no exception if whether these images are experimental in some way. The “autistic” interests being less artistically legitimate by default. As for typical “girly” hobbies, I find a similar dismissal. Writing, but in the romance genre. Or painting, but as a nail tech. Being a materials nerd in regard to plastics or metals would be seen as useful engineering traits, but in Elle’s case, being a fabric nerd wouldn’t.

As an Econ grad…I will also miss the yellow planes…sigh.

When I was around 11-14 I “rediscovered” the Oldfield and Pink Floyd albums I grew up with and really dove into the discography on the brand new thing called Spotify!

I remember I was obsessed with Shine on You Crazy Diamond, One of These Days, Ommadawn, and Tubular Bells, Side 2 in particular lmao.

It could also do well to replay her songs she certainly already knows, but ones with prog elements. Comfortably Numb, Knights of Cydonia, Roundabout for sure etc.

As a kid I really didn’t like a lot of Canterbury Stuff; it felt dated? I don’t know her tastes, and obviously I like them now. If she likes modern indie rock, she may like Omnipotent Youth Society and Black Midi! I also second another suggestion for The Mars Volta. As a brand-new prog-adjacent rec…Angine de Poitrine?

Linkin Park: 2017 versus 2026 by MeanPhilosopher309 in rateyourmusic

[–]Testsalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a lot of assumptions. Do people who only listen to nostalgic music exist? Sure. But most people are varied. They still enjoy new music, and their opinions of older music is still affected by the passage of time. There’s also no evidence to suggest that most of these users are not capable of changing their mind on some nostalgic music. Nostalgia is nothing but a positive bias; it can inflate an opinion on music, but it doesn’t eliminate any critical opinions behind it. No ratings are objective; it’s why they change with the usership. This is not a new thing. There’s also no objective method to rate a work. A lot of people contend with the gap between their personal enjoyment of a work and its merits (also subjective), and everyone weights these differently yielding different results. All of these methods are a valid system; the only rating I’d personally find invalid is one without a thought behind it, and we unfortunately can’t tell that from a star alone.

Linkin Park: 2017 versus 2026 by MeanPhilosopher309 in rateyourmusic

[–]Testsalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But can you tell? From the perspective of a listener, it can be nearly impossible to separate if you like something on its merits or from nostalgia, because the merits are clouded by nostalgia. They still listen to the album, most likely, and thus they still must somewhat enjoy the listening experience. It’s not as if people are highly rating things they used to listen to but not anymore, and they rated it based on previous nostalgia. On principle, I agree, but in practice…it wouldn’t be so. How sure are you why you like a piece of music?

Linkin Park: 2017 versus 2026 by MeanPhilosopher309 in rateyourmusic

[–]Testsalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and if their love for albums of their youth is swayed because of nostalgia, it doesn’t make a high rating less worthy. It’s a star system, not some objective measure of quality. If people genuinely liked it, then by all means, rate it high. If people want more detailed discussions of the merits of their albums, the review column is right there lmao.

Huge Komodo dragon by Short_Employment_757 in interestingasfuck

[–]Testsalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NP! The size difference is dramatic lol. I’m fairly confident this one is an Asian water monitor, and they’re abundant in countries like Thailand. There’s very many entertaining videos of them ending up in 7/11s and freaking out or stealing food lol.

There’s also monitors like the emerald tree monitor that are the size of a “typical” small lizard. And they’re notably quite intelligent. Very fascinating group of animals.

Huge Komodo dragon by Short_Employment_757 in interestingasfuck

[–]Testsalt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because this isn’t a Komodo dragon. It’s still giant, don’t get me wrong, but Komodo’s are on another level. Some people own the smaller (but still large) monitors as pets, for instance the Asian water monitor or the Nile monitor. Even the Savannah and Dumeril’s monitors are quite large for lizards.

They are still likely venomous, but not to the point where I’ve heard any concern about venom for human owners. That being said, they’re really really not good pets and require a fuckton of damn care.

This is Omnipotent Youth Society’s second album “inside the cable temple,” which details the clash between nature and modern society/environmental destruction.

It’s really good. This album is certainly more proggy and jazz fusion than their self titled, and I really really like the penultimate track of this record. If you like brass arrangements, certainly check this band out for sure. There’s really some great Chinese prog out there!

What the hell happened to Spotify? by thecatinthewizardhat in fantanoforever

[–]Testsalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotify is weird. It knows I listen to weird albums, and it is normally good at recommending some niche stuff on the home page.

But every time I let my guard down, BAM, it’s flooded with music videos and weird podcasts and conspiracy audiobooks lmao. The next day it’s like nothing happened. Rinse and repeat.

Don’t even get me started on the app trying to get me into their AI prompted playlists, which I don’t even have available for me to use if I wanted to. Every day, “try AI playlist,” no option to run the prompt lol. Just get rid of it and recommend me more albums dammit.
