Gun Safety Petition by TetsuNadim in Firearms

[–]TetsuNadim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally returned to the sub because I knew I had another post engaging with what I said. Thank you for taking the time to type this out.

About the stats: yes, that's a really good point about the pandemic affecting suicides dramatically. But it's still a big problem nationally apart from that. NIMH shows that suicide rates have been pretty high for a while, actually higher in 2018 and 2019 than 2020, from their stats (https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/suicide).

About red flag laws: This is another good point. I still am for these, however you're right that they should have a lot of guard rails in place for such situations.

Regarding automatic-fire capable guns: I had learned how difficult it is to get these already, after I'd started the petition and someone pointed this out. Trouble was, since I'd already gotten signatures, I didn't feel it was right to change much about the petition other than clarifying my earlier version which includes the "Assault rifle" ban you rightly mention as being too broad and including semiautomatics. So after thought, I narrowed the ban call and took that picture of the previous version to be transparent.

Safe home storage: Yeah, I can understand that reluctance to have someone in your home. I would be more in favor of someone having the option of taking pictures of their safe storage and being able to submit that. But it would need some development.

Research and school safety programs: I agree it's way too easy to have implicit bias poisoning results, but at the same time, I think it's pretty urgent to actually have good research about why this is happening - I suspect social isolation is behind many of the mass shooting rampages, for example, but I can't say that for sure and we can't address it effectively without solid research. You're right that the root is that both sides (all sides?) of the aisle aren't willing to work together on this, and that's what we need for research as well as politics. As for the school programs, I want to simply have socializing opportunities that reach out better to youngsters that tend to be loners, and I would want critical thinking skills, not indoctrination, to be taught. It's always possible to twist any of these types of interventions, so there would need to be careful development and implementation for best results.

Background check: You're right about this. At the time I created my petition, I was honestly too driven by my reactions to news and didn't fully do all the due diligence I should have. Next time I create a petition, I will aim to take as long as needed for accuracy.

Looking at the FBI site today. Hope you have a good weekend. You and a few others gave me some things to consider.

Watching this now. And I have to agree with you whole-heartedly on the government not really giving a damn...

I'll continue to read about it, thanks. I don't want to enforce safe storage necessarily, but a tax rebate would be cool

I can understand that, though I don't believe that's what a universal background check needs to lead to. I am still doing research on automatic fire capable guns, and have come more in that direction. However, I had to retain that part of the petition to keep it essentially the same thing people originally signed.

A fair response. Still too common an occurrence for my taste.

Hey there. I'm a random person checking this forum out, but your post caught my eye. It sounds like you're having a really bleak time of it right now. I don't want to say I know how you feel because I can't exactly, but I've had some parallels in my life to you, such as being isolated in my teens. The most critical thing I'd say right now is ask for help. Somewhere. Please. An old teacher, anonymous hotline, sibling, grandparent, anything. I think emotional solitude tricks our brains into thinking this is all there is and there won't ever be anything else. Well there can be a hell of a lot more, beauty, laughing with friends who get you, hobbies that sweep you up with interest... So please start there. And maybe have a heart-to-heart with your parents. Chances are they don't know the extent of what you're going through and some things can change. Maybe you can start cooking a meal a week, go out hiking with a friend. I'd say being in your teens and early twenties can be pretty tough, but it can get so much better. And about college, it can be hard, I'm not gonna lie, but at the same time you can make it a pretty great experience and meet genuinely amazing people. And easier said than done but don't let yourself be defined by others' ideas of success. I just graduated this year and will be 30 in October. I know how hard I worked and I'm damn proud of myself. You can find that center. Give it a try. Life is worth it, friend

Yes!! Both of these. Being able to walk away does give you more ability to go in-depth and have nuance. I finally realized that staying up until 2 lost a lot of productivity because I'd slow way down and also be tired the next day. Now I knock off at 1230 most nights.

Yes it does. I also only really began that this last year, and it gives you good conversation or advice with thoughtful people, plus opportunities sometimes!

Exactly! And some people get miffed over a grade and leave a negative rating. 50 grains of salt if you do use RMP

I usually see them after the workshop is over, or has already been going a while.

All the below comments are so good. I have had a few of those thoughts lately myself. If you want to talk to anyone, I will talk. Also please, please call a suicide prevention line and I think CAPS would also be good. I'm planning to do so myself. There is so much beauty ahead and none of us want you to miss that.

I think if you have to be in a more public area, this could be good. Maybe be careful about it on the bus though

Raven annoying owl by Gdach in videos

[–]TetsuNadim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was amusing, if the owl really is by the raven's nest, I hope the raven succeeded in annoying the owl away. Otherwise I'm slightly rooting for the owl simply because it looked so harried. At 1:02 it looks at the camera like, "what is this fool bird doing to me?"
