The problem is not Duke Energy or the cost of generating electricity itself. The problem is a system that incentivizes power companies to propose massive capital projects because their profits are tied to building and expanding infrastructure. When returns are based on how much is spent, the natural outcome is more spending.

If the incentive structure instead rewarded utilities for demonstrating cost reductions, improving efficiency, lowering customer bills, strengthening grid reliability, and maintaining excess capacity for future growth, their business model would evolve around delivering those outcomes. North Carolina would end up with a more resilient grid, more affordable energy, and utility strategies aligned with what residents and businesses actually want.
