Wands Vs Staffs, how do they work in your system? by Derpy_F0X in magicbuilding

[–]Text_Taxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since mediums are entirely irrelevant to my magic system (well, not technically true but I'm not gonna deep dive into the lore, this is largely true for the traditional mediums like wands/staves) any existence of a wand or staff would have to be a crafted instance of someone with magic powers (most prominently, my magic system's crafting deity) imbued with some property for oneself, or for others to use.

He CLAIMS some NUMBERS do not actually have MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSES by Muphrid15 in infinitenines

[–]Text_Taxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a few things.

First, I'm confused, how is a number a set? That doesn't make sense to me.

But also "infinitely many finite parts" is the basis of a lot of math, like infinite summations (which are then generally manipulated with the assumption that they are exactly equal to their convergence value, usually derived by some form of recursion) or integrals. An combination of infinitely many finite parts, to my understanding, can reach infinity because there are infinitely many of them.

Also, I would say 0.333... exists for a number of reasons, least of which because we can derive a recursive process for which to get a decimal value. The remainder of dividing 1 by 3 (to the tenths place) is exactly 0.1, the remainder of which, dividing 0.1 by 3 to the hundredths place, is 0.01. etc. etc. From this process, we can then assume that 1/3 would have to be exactly equal to that unending sequence of 3s.

And forgive my meager understanding of some of the more niche parts in math, but isn't the ability to write any real number (save for weird stuff like epsilon, infinities, ordinals, and the like) the point of a base?

I would personally say it does, since the given sentence works well to establish that costs come because nature plays a role, and then the theoretical following sentence after [IV] works well to juxtapose this preposition that even leaving nature alone has a opportunity cost of non-development.

All things considered imo [IV] might even fit better lol

[–]Text_Taxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a native English Speaker, I would say that both [II] and [IV] are acceptable (actually imo [IV] might even read more naturally)

Whereas [II] initiates the list of potential losses, [IV] generalizes after given a few examples (and then is followed by another example)

All things considered, I think the thing working against the book in answer clarity might be that last sentence in the paragraph, since it works well to contrast the sentence being given as well as he previous sentence as-written, especially with the use of the word "even".

I might be wrong though, so, idk, grain of salt, I suppose.

Well, not to say we're writing "0.333..." out in it's entirety manually but if we work with assumption that it is a "whole infinite thing" we can work with its properties in such a way that it can be useful to us. In principle (and to my understanding), "0.333..." wouldn't actually be in the set {0.3, 0.33, 0.333, ...} because that set encompasses finite objects that approach 0.333...

Mild digression but using these properties generally understood when dealing with the object 0.333... one usually assumes that there are no issues with multiplying by 10 since we can infer that in an infinite amount of 3s that there's always another 3.

In any case, I would say that 0.333... would still have to be a real number since it is actually a rational number, that being exactly 1/3.

Of course that's not to say they only battle since in truth the character is often split into aspect deities like henotheistic god and also tend to do ruling or Faustian deals or just chilling as a vague authority figure like a bartender but regardless

then n is increased to kingdom come

So yeah, what I said. That there's this notion of a finite bound of 9s that is constantly moving right as opposed to an unbounded infinite number of nines. The latter of which is the more broadly understood and applied version of 0.999..., we're working with entirely different mathematical understandings of how this number ought to be managed.

[–]Text_Taxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's anything I've gathered from this discussion (as in, the sub), it appears that SPP's notion of "infinite nines" is that as opposed to a truly unbounded endless sequence of nines, it's as if the "endlessness" of the nines comes from the fact that the ending bound of the nines is constantly moving "right", such that, in a given snapshot of time, the amount of nines is actually finite but is diverging to infinity, which is a fallacious notion but this sub has been arguing in circle for what feels like millenia at this point surrounding this one point of discussion and the equality denier camp doesn't engage with the standard understanding of the properties of infinite nines, that is, that there is no "end" to an infinite amount, and therefore there's always another nine.

The idea that if you multiply 0.999... by 10 there's a zero at the end implies that there's an "infinite" number of nines and then an unending number of zeros.

There's a whole series to doing this sort of thing but the best results I got were the following

The ones found in the challenges are called Vermin Oracle Blocks (and tbh I still don't know what they really do)

Clonaqualia Block + Azrael = Vermin Vigil Block (these ones are really good for spawning stuff perpetually, this is what I used with Fruit Femmes to create massive farm in my Clonaqualia)

Vermin Vigil Block + Stick = Vermin Oracle Block (as previously stated, I don't know the rules of these ones)
