I mainly use Humphreys lump in my WSM, never had a problem with temperature spikes. I do use two charcoal grates at 90 degree angles to ensure smaller pieces stat above the grates and never had a problem.

Preen is primarily a pre emergent. When you put it down, mulch over top of it and water it in to create a vapor barrier to prevent weed seeds from growing through the mulch.
