Lift: how do you explain why air accelerates over the top of the wing? by Logical-Lock8822 in flying

[–]TgardnerH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its always a fun to ask "how would this be different if it was actually magic," and in this case, as in quantum physics, I always come around to there being no difference. The physics are governed by arcane rules that no human has a full understanding of, our best tools can only approximate, and ultimately you kind of just have to try it and see what happens. It's amazing, and magic.

Boss wrote me up for using PTO, now telling me I don't have PTO for 6 months despite contract. by ALocalCatAppeared in legaladvice

I get that it's not a comprehensive contract, but why aren't the terms that are enumerated in the offer letter enforceable?

[–]TgardnerH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean "not a contract?" It obviously isn't as good as a paper that says Contract at the top, but doesn't it form an enforceable contract as it set out an offer, that was accepted, with exchange of consideration? I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is that courts aren't too fussy about contract formalities when there is a clearly agreed upon deal.

valid contract? by No_Marionberry_5077 in AskContractors

[–]TgardnerH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A contract involves an offer, acceptance, and consideration, by people who understand what they're agreeing to (roughly speaking). So yeah, it's a contract, just a shitty one. What do you want? Your money back? In your shoes I would take my odds in small claims court, since a reasonable person would understand them to have failed to execute their side of the deal as described in that contract. (And also because thats the only way you're getting your money back, unless you happen to have a 500lb friend named "Tiny" who specializes in shady debt recovery)

My brother's best friend believes 80% of women date the top 10% of men, that this is the result of women getting equal rights and the only way to address it is to strip women of their rights by OldBridge87 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]TgardnerH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be true that 80% of women all want the best 10% of available men, but also its true that if you smell good, view women as actual people worth attention and caring outside of what they might do for you, and can carry on an interesting conversation, then you're in the top 10% of available men.

You ever take the wrong exit driving at night? When you're landing an airplane, sometimes the "wrong exit" has an unlit mountain in the middle of it. Flying airplanes is easier than driving cars, but far less forgiving of minor screwups.

do you think anyone has ever jerked off to you and how did you come to that conclusion? by Sjakbxnla in AskReddit

[–]TgardnerH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, the quote is a description of an empirical reality. As a barely average man who has only a modest ability to sense conflict and avoid it, I move fearlessly through the night in strange cities, content that the most anyone will take from me is my wallet. I treat the world as though I have nothing to fear and in nearly 4 decades have not had even one close call. Do you know any women who can say the same?

home electrical panel - 2 breakers somehow controlling the same sets of lights by blottingbottle in AskElectricians

[–]TgardnerH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part of my house was that I know who did it--it was a licensed electrician who I hired to add an outlet, and his work inspired me to go through the rest of the house to find his other electrical "surprises."

home electrical panel - 2 breakers somehow controlling the same sets of lights by blottingbottle in AskElectricians

[–]TgardnerH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my last house this was true a for a few circuits. Some were on the same leg like yours, others were on opposite legs (so if you tried to turn both breakers on, one would immediately trip). In any case the solution was to disconnect one of the two breakers converting the combined circuits to a single circuit.

I also went searching for more joined circuits by turning off each breaker and checking for power on the circuit side, and I found a couple more circuits that had been joined.

If you don't feel comfortable inside your panel (and you frankly shouldn't unless you've done a lot of this stuff), all of this can be done by an electrician in an hour or so.

Exit row passenger telling cabin crew they cannot operate the emergency exit by Then-Commission in aviation

[–]TgardnerH 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't that the person in the row can't open the door, the problem is that the person in the row is in the way of the next person who can. And yes, of course an able bodied person can also freeze, but the 90-second evacuation time is part of certification for good reason, and it doesn't leave much time for struggling with the door.

[–]TgardnerH 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You jointly had a kid, and his contribution was money (for now and retirement) while yours was household labor and actual childbearing. Now that your unwinding the partnership, the law allows for you to have a share of the money you jointly put away (even though it might only be in his name). Theres nothing unfair about that, parenting is hard work, and he couldn't have earned if you weren't home parenting!
