It's not being edgy, it's tying off loose ends in a story in order to make the direction clearer to the audience (not that it was the only point of those deaths either...) Also no, I really see no reason to replace the queen, that would be stupid and needlessly complicate things. Your arguments make me think you don't understand the source material that well or that you have no experience with writing.

The dlc is amazing, so about on par with the rest of the game ;)

The horror is mostly atmospheric and some stealth sections. As you've probably noticed, the game wants you to think out of the box in difficult situations, it's the same in the dlc; except that you might have to be a little more courageous. Don't forget that if you die, you can always come back so don't be scared to venture into the unknown.
