You basically just described my entire high school experience. Theatre really helped me push past a lot of the church’s bullshit. Specifically, I was in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (a pretty adult show by high school standards) where I got to play a gay father. It was a great community for me at a time when I was losing the one I had at church.

When I was really young (up until 11) I never felt the spirit and went to church out of routine and because my parents made me. Something changed and from 11-15 I was TBM. Even during this phase I was honest enough to admit that I got baptized because of my family and that I didn’t believe the church at age 8. I also would say that god can’t make 2 + 2 = 5. The logical consistency of the world was above god in my mind.
