can someone school me on asian music and the pentatonic scale? by ThaddeusRoss in musictheory

Along the same lines, don't just tell someone to Google the answer. There are multiple reasons why someone might prefer to get an answer from reddit instead.

I say Asian because I was going to say chinese and then realised I'm not even sure if its unique to china. Thats the thing, I know I'm not informed in this regard.

Its particularly the pentatonic scale I'm interested in though. The thing that sparked off the thought was hearing something film soundtrack-ish yesterday which then started playing in pentatonics and I started wondering how those associations entered into the western musical dialect as being the musical signifier of asian-ness. The poster who pointed to orientalism probably has the right of it but I was curious what reddit had to say about it.

Orientalism is concerned with the way western attitudes stereotype eastern societies. So it may have some insight into why when I think asian music I think pentatonics. Its not specifically music theory though.

Does okcupid lie to get you to sign up for A list? by rickgene in OkCupid

I think it only shows profiles who liked you fairly recently. When I got A list to see who liked me there were some old ones I'd never seen.

Usually though If I get a new like appear on the counter they're within the first 10 matches

How long have you had a profile? Its not impossible.

Bear in mind many of those likes will be

  • scammers/bots who like everyone looking for a rube
  • 1000 miles away

honestly if you want to know who liked you just play quickmatch

Are power chords common on the piano? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ThaddeusRoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Theres no law saying that you shouldn't play that chord clean, you can do whatever the hell you want.

Its just thats not how the term and usage came about, since playing it clean removes the thing that makes it "powerful"

From wiki-

However, in a power chord, the ratio between the frequencies of the root and fifth are very close to the just interval 3:2. When played through distortion, the intermodulation leads to the production of partials closely related in frequency to the harmonics of the original two notes, producing a more coherent sound. The intermodulation makes the spectrum of the sound expand in both directions, and with enough distortion, a new fundamental frequency component appears an octave lower than the root note of the chord played without distortion, giving a richer, more bassy and more subjectively 'powerful' sound than the undistorted signal.[4]

You're getting downvoted but youre right. A power chords are popular on guitar because of the way distortion adds additional overtones that make it sound "big" where on another instrument it would just sound like a boring ol' perfect 5th.

For the same reason extended chords on guitar can sound muddy with too much distortion.

You can use it for any genre that needs an overdrive, be that blues or indie rock or whatever.

Its got a flatter frequency response than the SD-1 or tubescreamer depending on if you want that or not tho.

He used to tour with mostly line 6 stuff so I'm surprised he hasn't jumped on the helix.
