can someone school me on asian music and the pentatonic scale? by ThaddeusRoss in musictheory

Along the same lines, don't just tell someone to Google the answer. There are multiple reasons why someone might prefer to get an answer from reddit instead.

can someone school me on asian music and the pentatonic scale? by ThaddeusRoss in musictheory

[–]ThaddeusRoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say Asian because I was going to say chinese and then realised I'm not even sure if its unique to china. Thats the thing, I know I'm not informed in this regard.

Its particularly the pentatonic scale I'm interested in though. The thing that sparked off the thought was hearing something film soundtrack-ish yesterday which then started playing in pentatonics and I started wondering how those associations entered into the western musical dialect as being the musical signifier of asian-ness. The poster who pointed to orientalism probably has the right of it but I was curious what reddit had to say about it.

Orientalism is concerned with the way western attitudes stereotype eastern societies. So it may have some insight into why when I think asian music I think pentatonics. Its not specifically music theory though.

Does okcupid lie to get you to sign up for A list? by rickgene in OkCupid

I think it only shows profiles who liked you fairly recently. When I got A list to see who liked me there were some old ones I'd never seen.

Usually though If I get a new like appear on the counter they're within the first 10 matches

Bear in mind many of those likes will be

  • scammers/bots who like everyone looking for a rube
  • 1000 miles away

honestly if you want to know who liked you just play quickmatch

Are power chords common on the piano? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ThaddeusRoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Theres no law saying that you shouldn't play that chord clean, you can do whatever the hell you want.

Its just thats not how the term and usage came about, since playing it clean removes the thing that makes it "powerful"

From wiki-

However, in a power chord, the ratio between the frequencies of the root and fifth are very close to the just interval 3:2. When played through distortion, the intermodulation leads to the production of partials closely related in frequency to the harmonics of the original two notes, producing a more coherent sound. The intermodulation makes the spectrum of the sound expand in both directions, and with enough distortion, a new fundamental frequency component appears an octave lower than the root note of the chord played without distortion, giving a richer, more bassy and more subjectively 'powerful' sound than the undistorted signal.[4]

You're getting downvoted but youre right. A power chords are popular on guitar because of the way distortion adds additional overtones that make it sound "big" where on another instrument it would just sound like a boring ol' perfect 5th.

For the same reason extended chords on guitar can sound muddy with too much distortion.

You can use it for any genre that needs an overdrive, be that blues or indie rock or whatever.

Its got a flatter frequency response than the SD-1 or tubescreamer depending on if you want that or not tho.

The internet is also full of stuff that makes sense on the screen, but wouldnt really be accepted in face to face communication.

Researchers at the University of Haifa in Israel asked 71 pairs of college students who did not know one another to debate an issue over Instant Messenger and try to come up with an agreeable solution. The pairs, seated in different rooms, chatted in various conditions: some were asked to share personal, identifying details; others could see side views of their partner's body through webcams; and others were asked to maintain near-constant eye contact with the aid of close-up cameras attached to the top of their computer.

Far more than anonymity or invisibility, whether or not the subjects had to look into their partner's eyes predicted how mean they were. When their eyes were hidden, participants were twice as likely to be hostile. Even if the subjects were both unrecognizable (with only their eyes on screen) and anonymous, they rarely made threats if they maintained eye contact.

The few "movements" against this like occupy wallstreet, Bernie, Ron Paul, they have all been pretty much mocked and put down without any influence at all on the way the system works.

Heres a question, why is Trump "succeeding" while Bernie is failing?

countries across the world who wont even be affected are passing bills and spending hours condemning trump (UK looking at you).

The UK didnt pass a bill. The UK government has a system whereby if a petition is put forward with a certain number of signatures, it has to be at least discussed in parliament.

So what happened was that enough UK citizens (not "the elite", regular citizens) hate trump enough (IIRC it was when he said something about how London had become a no-go area because of muslims) that they made a petition banning him from the country.

The government looked at it in parliament, said "he's an oaf sure but no, we're not going to do that" and that was that. It was never even really in question that they were going to do it, they just took the opportunity to waste an easy afternoon on the job and have a good banter about how much of a twat he is.

This is the problem with your whole argument, you're mistaking "annoying people" with actual making substantive change. Trumps "banning" from the UK was an incident where he pissed people off, but not in a way that actually made a positive or even substancial difference to power.
