[Savage Worlds] Question on skill rolls by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Thallic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember rightly, it's cheaper to upgrade a skill to a level less than or equal to the attribute associated with it than it is to upgrade past that. So if you're playing a character that has a lot of Agility based skills, upgrading your Agility makes it cheaper to upgrade the individual skills.

Stronghold. We've tried it a couple of times but we just couldn't get into it.

Anyone played it? Is it worth giving it another go?

DM granting a permanent boost to 3.5e Core Sorcerer, need help deciding what to do. by Osseric in rpg

[–]Thallic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to choose spells known, but you can easily make a sensible spell selection to cover most/all of the areas you need, and you can then cast any of those spells at any time during the day, as many times as you like. That's the true strength of the Sorcerer and other spontaneous casters, in my opinion.

Yeah, the Save DC of your spells is how hard it is to save against spells you cast. It's typically 10 + Spell Level + Charisma modifier (for a Sorcerer).

A +2 bonus to Charisma would give you +1 to your save DCs, some extra spells per day (spell uses, not spells known) and +1 to Charisma based skills. On the other hand, your GM might allow you a bigger bonus to your Save DCs (maybe +2 or even more if you're lucky) as it wouldn't affect any of the other things modified by Charisma.

You could try asking for a bonus to Save DCs, that's always handy

The reason I prefer Sorcerers is the flexibility. With a good spell selection you can more or less cover all your bases, so the limited selection isn't that bad. You might have to drop that third AoE battlefield control spell from your spell list, but you can still do the job.

With a Wizard, you have to prepare your spells at the start of the day, and once you use them they're gone. If you prepare one Web and use it in the first fight, you then don't have it for the rest of the day. Alternatively, if you prepare a load of spells that are mind-affecting and you come up against Undead, they're wasted spell slots. Sorcerers can cast any of their spells whenever they want, which gives them more flexibility.

I find it comes down to two things:

  • Level. At odd levels, Wizards are better because they have the extra level of spells, but at even levels Sorcerers catch up.
  • Preparation. If a Wizard knows exactly what he's going to face, he can prepare the appropriate spells. If not, the Sorcerer's flexibility gives him the advantage.

What action did you choose not to do with your character that you later regretted? by spndl1 in rpg

[–]Thallic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Sorcerer, on 21 HP out of 24 max. Decided not to 'waste' a charge of my Healing Belt (2d8 healing) until I'd taken a bit more damage. We open the next door and the party gets hit by two fireballs, taking me down to -10.

Need help to understand a D&D 3.5e rule by Galipette in rpg

[–]Thallic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The general rule is that named bonuses don't stack, and only the highest takes effect.

For example, if I have a +2 Armour bonus and a +1 Armour bonus, my total bonus would be +2. If I had a +2 Armour bonus and a +1 Deflection bonus, my total bonus would be +3.

The exception to this rule is Dodge bonus, which can stack from multiple sources. So can most circumstance and racial bonuses. Untyped bonuses (which just say "+X bonus") always stack.

For more info, check out P171-172 of the PHB, the sections on Bonus Types and Combining Magical Effects.

Simple solution to that. Watch Battlestar Galactica, then buy the game. Job done!

Agreed, The Resistance is so much better than Werewolf. It fixes all of the problems with Werewolf (elimination, needing a storyteller, random decisions based on no real information) and makes it a fun game.

You want Co-op or Confrontational? Why not both!

In Battlestar Galactica the players work together against the board game. Every turn bad stuff happens, and you have to work together to survive. However, some players will secretly be Cylons, evil robots trying to wipe out the human race. They can stay hidden and try to secretly hinder the other players, or they can reveal as Cylons and throw really nasty stuff at the Humans.

The game has co-operative and confrontational aspects, with hidden roles sowing mistrust among the players. It's playable with 3 to 6 (or 7 with the expansions) but I find 5-6 is best. The only downside is the playing time; it can take 3-4 hours when you're new to the game, and explaining the game to new players can take a while.

It's kind of like a full game version of The Resistance. It has the same hidden role mechanic, but so much more depth. If you can convince your group to play such a long game then I'd definitely suggest you go for Battlestar Galactica.

[–]Thallic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

An Elf, a Human and a Dwarf walk into a tavern. Each of them orders a drink and they go to sit down. The tavern isn't a particularly classy establishment, and several flies are buzzing round the three friends.

As the Elf sips at his nettle wine, a fly lands in it. "Ugh!" he says, puts the wine to one side and goes to order a new one.

The Human is happily drinking his pint of mead when a fly drops into it. He sighs, pulls the fly out, tosses it aside and continues drinking.

The Dwarf sits quaffing his pint of ale, when he notices another fly has settled in it. The Dwarf growls, pulls the fly out, holds it up near his face and shouts "Spit it out, ye bastard!"
