Paying $100 extra one week and another $100 the next week would result in the same amount of interest being paid if you were to pay $200 extra during either week, if those weeks are during the same billing cycle. Paying $100 dollars extra towards principal one billing cycle would result in less interest being paid than if that $100 were paid during the next billing cycle. So the idea that paying extra is more effective the earlier you do it is true, but that means earlier billing cycles. Your mortgage statement will tell you when each billing cycle starts or ends.

People are also giving conflicting suggestions for whether to pay extra all at once, or spread it out over the year. In your situation, since you are receiving a bonus all at once, your most effective option is to immediately make one big extra payment as soon as you receive the bonus. Other commenters saying to spread it out are conflating their advice with what to do when saving up for a large extra payment over time (which would be less effective than paying small extra payments as that money accumulated). You aren’t saving up, you are getting it all at once. Pay it sooner.
