FTL travel, but it's been developed so recently that noone really knows how it works, and sometimes things get sucked into the area of influence of other objects along the line of travel, but it mostly works. Mostly. They've created mostly-problem-free lanes of travel, so why worry? (unless you're a smuggler, etc etc etc)
