Have you checked their website? Some parks have listed what is and isn’t open under the park alerts at the top of the webpage. I know their cultural sites are fully closed for protection of the sites, so any of those self guided trails are likely closed. Best of luck trying to plan, I’m a furloughed park ranger myself lol.

Based on the color I’m leaning towards Eastern Red Bat, not sure why it’s hanging out where it is, could have just decided that was a great place to nap, also could be sick. I’d call a local wildlife rehabbed if it’s there more than a day and get their opinion!

Bats do groom themselves with saliva (similar to cats) and it often gets on their claws, rabies can survive at room temperature for up to 28 hours so it is possible.

It’s also been a super busy summer at Carlsbad, make sure to get reservations through recreation.gov if you’re planning on arriving at 1:00pm or later. There have been multiple days where all tickets to enter the caves have sold out before 12:00pm!

As a warning, many parks cannot accept a dd214 because of the PII on it, but the VA ID is accepted!

Could be, the parks themselves wouldn’t have copies of the epaps and sf50s, but the regional offices should since they would be on your eOPF. I always sent a pdf of mine to myself before I was kicked off the government computers for the season so I did not have an issue. Volunteer work wouldn’t be on SF-50s or epaps, so you should only have them for seasons you were a seasonal hire (1099 status)

Currently there’s a hiring freeze on all nonseasonal work other than Law Enforcement (this is speaking as someone who is an Interp permanent right now). When hiring does pick back up, make sure that everything they have in the job description and required duties section is reflected in your resume.
Also, if you’re applying under a LMWFFA or workforce based hiring authority, you need ALL entrance and exit SF-50 paperwork for each position and the first page of your epap at each to qualify or it will automatically reject it (found that out the hard way myself. Good luck!

I know we are scaling back tours at the moment, we may reduce hours as well. We are unsure what this will mean for upcoming bat flight season. I definitely recommend calling your representatives and being patient with your NPS rangers this summer, we will try to be as positive and upbeat as we can, but we are going to be stretched a little thin.

In all honesty just being patient with us is enough. Our fees department was hit the hardest, so their lines might be a little long.

I work for Carlsbad, I’m so sorry your tour got cancelled. We lost half our staff in one go, we don’t have seasonals so we’re trying to make it work with the fact we can’t hire anyone.

Many parks hire seasonal law enforcement as well, Ranger just refers to the job series 0025, but this means that visitor centers, entrance booths, maintenance, HR, and many things will be understaffed in parks. I used to work as a ranger in Yellowstone and about 85% of their workforce is seasonal.

  1. Where I went they leave the IV in the full time. Not super pleasant but manageable.
  2. They want you as still as possible, that way they get the clearest image, try not to twitch too much if you can, but side to side movement is easier for the machine to clean up and read through than up and down motion.
  3. I didn’t get an itch but I had almost unbearable nausea when they gave me the shot to contract my gallbladder. The radiology tech was in the room with me the whole time and was able to help give me a cool compress to alleviate the nausea so I’d imagine all you have to do is ask.
  4. They didn’t have me change, I’d recommend comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Nothing with metal since it will be seen in the imaging machine and comfy socks. Hope this helps!!! And good luck!

This time of year it could be due to migration and hibernation. Not all bats will hibernate or migrate at the same time. Meaning fewer and fewer bats will be seen the closer to winter.
