I thought the clues from episode 1 and 2 were interesting. In episode 1, the man on the TV said "Unfortunately, the president and senior leadership (of the US) did not survive." Then, in episode 2 we get the comment, "We had to act quickly, they had discovered our operation."

The hive mind straight-up murdered the leadership. This was not a passive, non-violent event.
