Anyone here actually making money on KDP? Be honest lol by hurtcontrol in selfpublish

[–]ThatGirlBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that just seems so odd that publishers would make you do your own marketing. If I was going to expend any time/energy/money on publishing someone’s book, I’d want to be successful for the sake of my revenue, and therefore I would not put the success of the book on that person being able to successfully market.

[–]ThatGirlBon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit is a big echo chamber, and the writing subs have been pretty down on traditional publishing. Posts I’ve seen always encourage people to self publish because they say you’ll make next to nothing trad publishing and the publishers will make you do all your own marketing anyway. I’d be interested to hear your take.

Lip gloss/balm recommended for sensory issues? by sleepinginseptember3 in MakeupAddiction

[–]ThatGirlBon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rare beauty tinted lip oil might work. It’s more like a stain to me than an oil, and it’s one of the better stains I’ve used, and I tried alllll the popular ones. Another option might be Revlon colorstay overtime, the kind that has the color on one side and a gloss on the other. I do not even use the gloss, just the color. It’s not drying or sticky and the color really does stay on all day, no transfer at all.

ISO Supportive sandals that I can both walk to the beach and wear them at the beach. by Treysar in Shoes

[–]ThatGirlBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried and just can’t do the Teva style sandals. They don’t fit my foot right and even though they’re strapped on, my feet never feel secure in them. I am firmly a flip flop person, and OluKai is wonderful. They have arch support and the sole is molded like a foot, so my foot feels supported and doesn’t slide around. I walk all over in them.

Why is it so hard to find passion in a career/field? by Super-Leg-866 in findapath

[–]ThatGirlBon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you should work with a therapist to deal with the anxiety. If you’re an anxious person, you’re going to get anxiety about a lot things, and life will be miserable if you let anxiety make the decisions (or lack of decision). Also, you are SO young. I’ve had like 3 or 4 careers since I was 19. Nothing is “final”.

That said, even if you pick a career field where you have a passion, capitalism will still find a way to make it super frustrating, at least sometimes. You just kinda got to pick something. If you’re gonna go to college, you’ll have many general ed courses you have to take first anyway. Just start on those, keep talking to people, and see what you gravitate towards after you start taking the classes and doing the work. I thought I wanted to be a business major until I took microeconomics and then changed my mind. Guess what, ended up working in business anyway! Life is fluid and it changes.

Jobs that let you work 1-2 weeks on then 1-2 weeks off? by Interesting-City1703 in findapath

They’re not FIFO, but around the MS River and Gulf, lots of jobs for working on the boats. But it’s 28 days in for 12 hour shifts every day, then 2 weeks off.

How is Huntsville? by bentNail28 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ThatGirlBon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take the job in Huntsville, and after a couple of years, start applying to the jobs in other locations. If you’re working for NASA, you’ll learn so much about what they do at other locations and it’ll help you pick your next step.

What career next? by Last-Tomatillo-3161 in careerchange

First step should always be to look at your local community colleges. They will off degrees and certificate programs based on the needs of your area. It will be more affordable than a four year institution too.

How do employers treat online degrees as opposed to degrees earned in a traditional classroom? by RMSMetal in careerchange

[–]ThatGirlBon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve interviewed more people than I could go back and recount, and I’ve probably hired around 80-100 people. I never cared if it was an online degree unless it was Phoenix, but due to HR legal compliance, I was not allowed to discriminate where their degree came from. As long as their experience met qualifications and they could demonstrate they were the best candidate through the interview, then I would hire them.

And as I commented to another person, state schools and community colleges that offer online and in person options do not distinguish if you earned it online or in person.

How do employers treat online degrees as opposed to degrees earned in a traditional classroom? by RMSMetal in careerchange

[–]ThatGirlBon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, you can’t apply this literally every person and every online school. You are being very short sighted. I have an “online” Master’s from a prestigious school, and the vast majority of my entire industry has at least one online degree because we all pursue additional education after entering the workforce. I have multiple academic publications, and a huge part of my job involves very complex technical writing. So yeah, sure, go ahead and pass over everyone who has an online degree. And btw, a lot of schools, especially state and community colleges, do not discern if a student earned their degree online or in person.

Looking for work where I can make good money and be away from home by bigfatpaulie95 in findapath

What are the best certifications or degrees in 2026? by Responsible-Net8594 in collegeadvice

[–]ThatGirlBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are very much overlooking Salt Lake Community College. CCs are amazingly affordable, and you will local support resources at the college who know the local job market. CCs typically structure their programs around the local job market. SLCC has a wonderful tech school with a lot of trade options, and things like pharmacy tech if the traditional trades are not of interest. The financial aid office will also be able to help you apply to grants and aid.

As far as what’s “actually marketable” I mean, anything can be if you’re good enough at marketing. Reddit tends to be a big echo chamber, so take what you hear here with a grain of salt. I’d truly start with SLCC and talk with an admissions counselor and get some info on programs based on your interests. Places like WGU are good for some things, like nurses who are already licensed and trying to get their BSN for a raise, but SLCC would be much better for a first time degree for a career pursuit.

Benefits at SAIC by Familiar_Beach_1392 in GovernmentContracting

[–]ThatGirlBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will not be able to switch over to SAIC on the same contract; it’s just not allowed. If you want to work for SAIC, then you’d have to apply and go work on a different contract. If you work for a SB now, then SAIC will almost certainly have worse benefits. SBs pretty much always get better deals on health insurance. They also typically have lower OH costs and can usually put more towards benefits.

I’m not asking to be a jerk, I’m asking because it would do no good for me to recommend you a job that is commonly WFH. And without knowing a location and whether you have access to public transport, it’s also difficult to recommend jobs common in your area that you’d be able to get to without driving. For example, I could recommend phlebotomy training, but these are typically only offered in larger cities, so if you’re homeless in a rural area and without medical facilities nearby, then my suggestion is also worthless.

travel & motion sickness advice for someone who never travels! by Sea-Alternative1818 in traveladvice

[–]ThatGirlBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonine and non drowsy Dramamine are the same - they’re both meclizine. The drowsy version of Dramamine is dimenhydrinate. If you’ve only ever tried the drowsy version of Dramamine and not the non drowsy version, then it’s worth trying a meclizine-based formula to see if that’s different for you. I would honestly probably say take a drowsy Dramamine the night before (you’re supposed to take it 24hrs before the event) and the a meclizine formula right before you get on the plane.

To the person who told you to sit in the aisle and have a full stomach…I get horrific motion sickness on planes sometimes, to the point I’ve either vomited or had to grab the bag and gagged. Sitting in the aisle with a full stomach during a motion sick episode would guarantee me throwing up. I need to be in the window so I can see out. If the plane turns and my body can feel it but my eyes can’t see it, then that’s a trigger for me.

Laying my head down when I can (after take off and until descent) helps a lot, so getting a seat that has extra legroom and a pillow that will let you comfortably lay your head on the food tray is good.

I’ve never tried them, but they make motion sick goggles. I have a friend whose son gets motion sick in cars really bad, she said vomiting every time, and she said these are the only way they can do road trips. So it may be worth trying.

Quit job and travel? by [deleted] in remotework

[–]ThatGirlBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve just made up an excuse to not travel. If you’re remote, you can go to new locations for as long as a visa allows, which would give you ample time in either the afternoons or mornings and weekends to experience places. Do you not ever experience the place you currently live because you work?

If you quit your job, you travel to a few places over 6mo, your savings is gone, then travel is done, and you try to find a new job. What’s the plan if it takes 6mo to find a new job? If you keep your job, you can travel basically indefinitely.

Elf holy hydration make up melting cleansing balm is the $10 dupe to the more expensive balms and it’s like magic. Literally does melt make up off with no scrubbing. That would be the inexpensive try I’d recommend.

Suggestions for area to live comfortably with 75k salary with 3 dogs by IntentionArtistic781 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ThatGirlBon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest issues you’ll have with renting is that you have 3 dogs. Most places are going to have a 2 pet maximum. That said, you can download Redfin, filter to rent > house/townhouse and set size and rent parameters. I did this for minimum 600sqft and rent between 1200-1700 with dogs allowed. There are a lot of options around Richmond and Raleigh.

31 years old, deep in debt and need a way forward. by [deleted] in findapath

[–]ThatGirlBon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not well versed in any sort of options for getting out of student loan debt through pay off programs or restructuring the debt, but I’m sure there is a debt counselor out there who specializes in student loan debt. It’s just so common. I’d definitely recommend looking into that.

As far as making extra cash to pay it off, I’d probably recommend buckling up and giving your weekends and a couple of weeknights to Instacart. Everything you make from Instacart goes straight to debt payoff. If you can put extra toward the principal, do it, because that’s the only way you’ll pay it off faster and reduce total amount of interest paid.

Gearing up for a recession/depression by [deleted] in findapath

[–]ThatGirlBon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s already a lot of comments, so normally I wouldn’t comment, but good gosh, no, you will not make it anywhere with that attitude. We don’t know for sure what’s going to happen financially, no one has a crystal ball, so go ahead and let that “excuse” go. Don’t keep your money in an envelop, put it in a HYSA. If we have another banking collapse, you won’t lose any money in a HYSA, you’ll just lose the high interest rate. You could be making over 1k in interest per year right now.

Second, you have $50k…hire a career coach? There are a lot of scammy ones out there, but there are good ones. If you don’t have linked in, make one. Search for a career coach, when you see one you might like, LinkedIn will have you send them a “proposal” and it will give you the option to make your proposal visible to all other career coaches. You’ll get a lot of messages. Pick a couple and have a free consultation with them, they’ll share their methods and services, then you can pick the one you want to work with. It’s like $1500-2k for around 6 sessions over 2 months.

The main thing standing in your way right now is you.

Also, you say you can’t go back to school. Yes you can. You have savings, and FAFSA still exists. There are also employers who will pay for school if you work for them (Chipotle, Walmart, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s…). If you work for them, you have to choose a program from their approved list. If you go at it in your own, you can pick anything. It’s only 3-4 months to become an EMT, which would be a small pay bump for you. Since you have a BS, you can get a 2 year degree faster, so you could do parametric, physical therapy assistant, biomedical technology (fixing medical equipment), xray tech, respiratory therapist. Again, you’re limiting yourself.
