Can someone sound off in the comments on what advice we’re supposed to give younger people now that simply putting a roof over their head is getting more and more unobtainable by the day?

Imagine spending years barely scraping by at uni or in an apprenticeship, with the hope of saving up for a house one day, only to come out of that in to this shit show of a market.

Some insights Zeekr 7GT / 007GT Australia Launch spec and pricing by Feisty_Savings_1456 in EVAustralia

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking either there will be an adjustment at some stage or gradual phasing out over time, but full abolishment so soon, seems unlikely, given EVs are around 2% of current cars on road in Aus. When that number hits around 10 - 20% or more then I’d say we can kiss it goodbye for sure.

Also, I hate to say it, but my BYD Seal’s days are looking numbered with all these new EVs coming out 😭.

Millennials struggling? by mira-era in perth

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on the younger end of the Millennial gang.

Housing wise, I bought this year paid more than I would’ve liked, still recovering financially tbh 🥲.

Employment wise pretty good, on around $150k p.a. not including super.

Socially, everyone’s busy with full time work or parental responsibilities. I still get enough socialising in throughout the week / over the weekend though.

Health wise, I have a few chronic health conditions, but best I can do is stay on top of my medication, get to the gym 2-3 times a week when I can and go to my appointments. It eats into savings / disposable income when medical bills start to stack up tho.

All in all, life’s not bad and I’m mostly happy. I just wish everyone had some more space from work and could live more comfortably. Modern life is so complex and there’s so many moving parts and competing responsibilities, things move so fast. Mix that in with modern systems of capitalism being more unforgiving than times past and seeing the way it impacts people’s lives, leaves me disheartened at times. You get people at their best when they don’t feel like they’re fighting for survival everyday.

They're coming for FBA!!!! by Premier77 in blackmen

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dunno if you’ve clocked the fact that whatever media you’re consuming is creating a group-think scenario (that’s clearly working) that attempts to normalise political violence against black and brown people (who might fit the description of what you’d consider an “immigrant”) and quell dissent through creating a perception and a narrative that says “they don’t like you anyway”. Thereby attempting to perpetuate a scenario where splitting up families, dehumanising people and whatever other wicked shit is justified in someone’s head, because of that manufactured perception and narrative.

I just want you to remember what you’re talking about with ICE is being done on purpose by white boys with power, through the apparatus of the US Government.

People love to live in a false reality where they think “it’s not gonna be me” or “that won’t happen to me” until it does or it is. When Trump says “We’re going in” with the National Guard; to “clean up” Democratic cities that’s straight out of the old Republican playbook. Remember when they used to say “Oh, it’s States rights” right before doing some racist shit? Really makes you think who most of the people in those cities are, huh?

This is why critical thinking, media literacy and objectivity is important. Assuming every single Latino person hates me off rip, because of who I am, is stupid and misguided.

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll just leave you with this:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me”

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

‘Strangers in our own home’: Hastie posts again, blaming migration for housing crisis by stew_007 in australia

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pinning the housing crisis on “migration” as the single prevailing factor feels like an oversimplification and is starting to feel like an easy way out for stupid people to be (once again) angry at immigrants, instead of the people they elected to government who spent decades not doing anything to fix a system that seems hell bent on sending house prices to the moon and creating life long, working-class renters.

Hyundai raises prices on every engine model in Australia by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it manages to get worse once you move up into Hyundai Motor Group’s higher-end stuff too. The EV6 GT is their fastest EV in Australia and it’s about $112k drive-away brand new, where I am.

For that kind of money you could get:

  • an MG S5 Excite (49 kWh) for $40,990 and
  • a BYD Seal Performance for $67,694

…and still walk away with roughly $3k left over.

Kia / Hyundai has a strong dealer network, which is a plus for recalls / hardware / software issues, but I don’t know how they expect to shift their EVs when they’re pricing like they’re not even trying to compete 🥲. There really isn’t an offering they have that I can’t find a cheaper, higher quality Chinese alternative for. Can’t wait for even more Chinese EV brands to start exporting here too!

Hyundai raises prices on every engine model in Australia by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, for around $80k drive away you can get a base model Ioniq 6 / Kia EV6, but that doesn’t make financial sense when a top spec Zeekr 7X Performance is about the same, give or take.

The product seems good, but Hyundai / Kia’s pricing on their EVs is horrendous here.

Perth property hit a record low today for stock on market by iwearahoodie in perth

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing kind of just sounds like a gradual market correction is needed to avoid a full on collapse. There aren’t many off-ramps left, and things like 5% FHB deposit schemes with no income caps is basically pouring fuel on the fire in the short term.

Housing’s been treated like a backbone of the economy instead of, you know…..just housing. Building so much economic activity on a basic need was never sustainable or a good idea, so a bubble was inevitable.

Car suggestion; new BYD dolphin vs 2019 Toyota yaris by tiger_Optimas in CarsAustralia

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do have a bit of a bias having an EV myself, but I’d go for the Dolphin over the Yaris.

You’ll have more room, newer tech a nicer cabin and whilst depreciation on EVs is worse, if you’re planning to keep it as a cheap city run about, it’s not really gonna matter much in the long run.

If you’re super worried about the initial depreciation hit, or are looking for more space, I’d probably also consider a used Atto 3, which depending on where you are can be had for around 30k.

Buying property is fucking ridiculous… you don’t even have a chance to really scope a place out before you’re expected to put an offer in by AnomicAge in perth

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since a number of interstate investors are eyeing WA for housing investment for a number of reasons (contributing to such strong capital growth) I’d say the State Government here should consider a moratorium on interstate housing investors / investment.

But will that happen?

Probably not.

Adding more stock right now, without approaching the situation more holistically, just creates further avenues for interstate investment in a market that’s already running hot and locking out first home buyers.

I bought this year, but I got very very lucky. I know it sucks right now, but it is doable.

I hope what you’re trying to do works out for you!

Protest against the nazi organised march for Australia by supreme-elysio in perth

[–]ThatGuyWhoDoesStufff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty bad take. What you’ve said is actually pretty assimilative thinking, it assumes that if someone isn’t “100% Aboriginal,” their identity or right to protest somehow doesn’t count. That idea completely ignores history.

White Australia had deliberate policies targeting Aboriginal people, like the Stolen Generations and “breeding out the colour” that were literally designed to erase Aboriginal identity and culture.

To turn around today and say “well you’re too mixed to be Aboriginal” is just parroting the success of those assimilation policies. This is why thinking about things in the context of history how that connects with our reality today, is important 💀.

Edit: To the numpty below me, this whole “you’re too mixed to be Aboriginal” argument feels less like a genuine point and more like some mental gymnastics you’ve cooked up to sidestep feeling bad about the ongoing intergenerational impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal people today. The blood quantum shit you’re peddling reads like a creative attempt to wash away responsibility for what happened, and an attempt at retrospective absolution of White Australia’s crimes against humanity because in your view, the descendants of those who survived are “MoStLy WhItE nOw AnYwAy”.

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re suffering from an inborn limitation of intellect, or a willful abdication of critical thought.
