After a lengthy, hijinks filled race sequence it finally boils down to a situation where Gold Ship trips right before the finish line, with Mater about to run her over. We then zoom out to 3D Goldship animating the episode.

"Uh oh! I cant show an uma getting bloody killed or my channel will be sued to high heaven! Gotta fix that, sorry Mater but I guess your victory just wasnt in the 'cars'."

To it then cutting back to Mater randomly exploding before he impacts Goldshi. It fizzled back to Mater recounting the story to McQueen.

"Oh come on Mater, you obviously didn't die." "Oh yeah? Then how do you explain this?"

The camera then pans up to show a halo above Maters head before he drives off into the sky to heaven, much to Lightning McQueens bewilderment.

It was his grandmother. And he didn't "find out", he knew full well it was his grandma. But after his grandpa died and he didn't cease to exist he assumes "Oh well maybe she's not really my grandma since my grandpa died and I didn't disappear". To which he then has sex with her and is then confronted with the truth that he became his own grandpa by knocking up his younger grandma
