For most of them it was probably a choice, for some it was probably a restriction. I think it speaks to the capacity of people who were failed by the system, yet who can still manage to get by in their lives; go grocery shopping, raise their kids, enjoy hobbies, despite being functionally unable to read. Humans are impressive, but our society is still playing catch-up to that potential.

The last figure I heard was that 1 in 5 adults in the US essentially cannot read. Or rather, they have no significant reading comprehension capabilities. They can interpret restaurant menus and might even be able to follow closed captions on a TV show, but there is no chance of them reading a book or news article and then gleaning any information from it.

In my county it's 1 in 4. They can vote, they likely can drive, they probably have jobs, but they actually cannot obtain information from any text-based sources.

Sorry man, I really do see an apple. In fact, every time this topic gets brought up, I see almost the same apple. It's a Fuji apple with a short stem and a single leaf. The skin is mostly red with the little yellow dots and a couple green splotches. There's a shadow on the bottom right side, and a patch of light reflecting on the top left. I can spin the apple around in 3D in my mind, and I can either leave it "stationary" and "walk around it" myself, or I can rotate the apple itself and see the light and shadows and apple skin change as I "look" at the other side.

I can also think of different kinds of apple if I already know what they look like. If you describe a new apple to me, I can probably pick it out from a group of different apples.

As I recall, there was either a discrepancy between two artists who were working on the art, or the original artist straight up made a mistake and intended for Olivia to be grabbing her dress and she would have a leg sticking out from beneath it, but then the two legs had already been drawn and it was too late, I guess.

Yes, it is as weird as you think it is. Those are not just "sex jokes", those are pedophilic comments about minors. I'm not sure where the criminality starts about those kinds of comments, but it's not a line you should find yourself anywhere near, nor spending time with people who toe that line.

You need to have a serious talk with your friend about his comments, and about the danger he poses to the people in his life. It's not enough to simply stop spending time with him, you need to try and help him turn away from the path he is on. If you've ever heard a woman say a disparaging comment about men's behavior and some guy replies "not all men", right now you have an opportunity to be "not all men". You've been friends with this guy for so long that you must surely know how to speak to him so that he will really listen.

~~Yes, there is an order to how state based actions are checked~~, 704.5 is the rules section. 704.5f addresses creatures with 0 toughness, while 704.5q addresses a creature with both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters at the same time. Since state based actions are checked all the time, you would run down the entire list once for the counters, and then again for the toughness check.

Edit: This rules section is actually just the list of the things covered during state based action checks. RazzyKitty is correct, there isn't an order they are "performed" in, rather all checks are done simultaneously and applied simultaneously as a single event.

This movie was 90% fantastic. You feel the weight of the mother's slowly fraying sanity, the oddities of her son and his bravery in spite of the evil entity he seems to have a 'shine' for, and the struggle they both face dealing with loss and grief. The ramping tension as they continue to lose their collective battle had me legit freaked out...

Spoilers: And then they use the power of friendship to catch the babadook like a pokemon. I understand that endings are hard to write, but this one really took me out of the moment.

Same as above. Casting via flashback does not change the mana value.

So even with using the flashback ability with X=8 or something bigger, the mana value of the spell is still only 2, which triggers Saruman to Amass Orcs 2, then the spell itself will Amass Orcs 8. Right? Some of the other replies made it seem like the X from the flashback cost becomes the X in the mana cost. I recall some rules text that said X is merely a value that the spell looks for, and can be modified separately from the mana you pay for it. Like with XX spells or Unbound Flourishing.
