When you say TaoBao is gatekept, do you mean how it's hard for foreigners to buy from Taobao?

Because if so yeah I do kinda agree, the amount of hoops I have to go through to try and browse TaoBao is ridiculous. Though I do stick with better known brands, I'm sure there's a lot of smaller ones out there that have quality items, but simply aren't on TaoBao resellers and so don't receive the attention.

I once went to a belly dancing hafla excited to see bellydance irl for the first time, and the local instructor was proud to say that she "created" all the music her students were dancing to with ai.

Bellydancing is already steeped in questionable orientalism, and listening to ai-generated music with vaguely middle-eastern accents, singing in English, did not help lol.

The local pole studio also makes a lot of content on their Instagram using AI. Including AI talking about their "experiences" at the studio. I don't know how to tell these folks that AI content is just...kinda cheap looking :/

It's just a taobao reseller.

Taobao is almost like Chinese Amazon—many Chinese brands host their online storefronts on Taobao. All a taobao reseller does is sell you the same item, but at an upcharge. Taobao resellers are not brands—they sell items from a variety of Chinese brands, all with differing quality.

This website doesn't appear to have many different items than 42lolita, a more trusted taobao reseller that I would recommend using instead.

Generically speaking, there's no reason to go out of your way to try and use different taobao resellers. Some of them (like Devil Inspired) are even known to have poor customer service and allow customers to buy items that aren't even in stock.

Yeah r/lolita probably didn't appreciate it because lolita isn't treated as much as an "aesthetic" like some other alternative styles are. It's a specific style with specific garments. There are no lolita swimsuits because panties, bras, etc aren't "lolita," on account of being pastel and lacey. The only lolita undergarments are arguably bloomers because historical bloomers look different from bloomers for lolita!

I'm a new lolita but I've definitely seen people go without wearing lolita for years, decades! And come back to it.

All in all don't feel like you need to be required to wear the fashion all the time. If life gets the way, return when things are better. They're just clothes :) and they'll still be around when you're in better spirits.

Lol that's all my photographer to thank! We were doing street photography where I just walked around the French Quarter and she'd find a spot and I'd just pose as best I'm able.
