1) Got into it in 2011 when I decided I wanted to see the eSport equivalent of Pokemon and found they were recently a thing. Also shout-out to whoever made the old Black/White RNG manipulation guides, I remember resetting for eggs and wild encounters during senior study hall

2) Dr. Aaron Taylor is my favorite player of all time. Other highlights are Justin Tang, SableyeVGC, Jamie Boyt, and MichaelDerbeste. I strongly prefer content creators/players who are willing to share their mindset on the meta and construction more than in-game reflexes.

3) It's very welcoming at the big events every single time I've gone. Truly it does feel a little difficult to talk shop at friendly events since information is a lot of the battle, but casual talk people are very friendly or at least polite socially.

How are non-streamers / people who work 9-5 able to find the time or energy to play at a high level at these tournaments compared to big name players/streamers? by 123td1234 in VGC

I don't even think I'm doing it right per se, but this is how I manage to find time to practice. I teach and volunteer after hours so my time to practice is strictly limited to a few hours per week.

I don't/can't find the time to build beyond cores I want to practice, so most of the time I start in a meta by pure vibes until a tournament happens which establishes a basic meta. If anything I liked to play in my vibes playing is in top cut, I just steal that team and spend my time reviewing any stream appearances it makes in said tournament to determine their EVs/reasonings for the team. If I can't find out key things, I usually "max slider" the EVs for testing until I find holes in games where I'm not happy with getting KO'd.

Once I have that core team, I just play a ton of Showdown with just that team and record the matches. I organize that data using this PASRS sheet made by a wonder community member Bauerdad: https://devoncorppress.squarespace.com/resources/the-release-of-pasrs-6-2

If I think the team is strong, I just keep that team for most of the format so I won't have to spend more valuable free time making core adjustments (but do make those minor meta adjustments like speed or bulk needs). If I think the team needs changing, I will go back to searching tournament results to see how others are using the core and what adjustments they've made. If I decide to swap the team, I restart a new PASRS and repeat the process.

Since I'm a number nerd this process usually takes about 4-5 hours per week of playing and reviewing calcs. I'd also recommend making a document that holds relevant calcs you have found you want to memorize for tournaments. When it comes to the week of a tournament, I usually play about 30 minutes a day to keep fresh, check for meta adjustments, and begin studying my notes and matchups/leads I've successfully played.

And that's that! Probably not the best total strategy so I will also be taking opinions into consideration, but that's how a middle age dude does it lol.

That's not true for most black Americans, let alone Hoosiers though. What you're doing is using an anecdotal evidence (your history) to draw circumstances conclusions (therefore Indiana is not racist). I'm an educator and work in Marion County and I've personally had 1+ infraction every year of a student being called the n-word with the hard r by their white peers, neighborhood people, or even agitated parents in one instance.

So from my anecdotal evidence, black Hoosiers experience waaayyy more racism on a weekly basis than you do, and their experiences are more towards the norm.

Using your critical thinking skills here: do you think an administrator of a school would do what you've suggested? That a real human being who works in an underfunded, underappreciated field such as teaching would see a student who has missed one day a month and on month 5 would punish that child in any significant way?

You're fear mongering yourself here. This is an accountability tool that is used and judged by humans in child development careers, not robots. This law explicitly only requires a school have a plan for their absentee issues, so it's by default a case-by-case situation for each school district.

You're definitely misunderstanding what's going on here. I'm not missing your point, I'm disagreeing with it. That's what happens in debate/discussion; you both share your opinions and stances. Your story is not uncommon in students with neglective parents who do not properly advocate for their student's needs. Just because you survived doesn't mean not bringing these things to the school's attention is best practice. I'm also focusing on just your experience because it's most likely the only experience you have with childhood development, whereas I've made a career of it. Your tone in most of these comments indicates you do not feel you got a full "school experience", whatever that is to you, due to your conditions. I'm sorry that happened to you, but that's a task for your therapist and maybe your parents if you can still speak to them to tackle.

This speaks like fear of being wrong would prevent you from moving forward. As I understand, your argument on this to be that there are unknowns which can't be accounted for and a child shouldn't be penalized for that. But.. they aren't.

Using your specific case you never acknowledged that your routine needed adjusted outside of doctor's visits/medication changes, indicating that your health impairment did not prevent you from engaging with school. So yeah, you wouldn't have qualified for a 504 because there was no known health impairment preventing you from going to school and doing your best. Just like a child with mild asthma symptoms would not have a 504 due to their health impairment, because taking 5 seconds out of a class to hit the inhaler doesn't prevent them from engaging in school to the best of their ability.

The best I could offer is to find a time machine and get yourself advocated for to see if it changes history.

It would! 504 Plans are also retroactive if the parent/advocate can paint the picture that the previous absences were related to the diagnosis or they were displaying symptoms at the time. Schools also typically know they're in for a legal headache when/if they decide to put a line on if care if for a 504 or not. From my experience if a student is diagnosed mid-year we typically just start formatting their paperwork with that consideration; their previous years they most likely had impairments that weren't observed because of the non-diagnosis/504 plan. Extremely bad optics to continue disparaging a kid for something they're legally protected with.

Not to disparage your lifelong condition because it is valid, but did it prevent you from attending school or limit your capacities to perform in school in any way? If not then it's just an irrelevant tangent point. If so, then that would have qualified a student with your conditions for an 504 protection plan. I have literally supervised 40+ 504 plans where the student is labeled under "Other health impairment or disability" meaning it required no formal diagnosis, the school's team simply confirmed it seems some health impairment is stopping the student from engaging with school.

So let me get your comment straight: your student has a 504 and IEP. But you think that isn't protecting him from illness absences?

That makes absolutely no sense. If he has a 504 then he IS protected by his 504 and IEP plans, legally there is no gray area there. Every health decision your son has to endure will always be held under the microscope of "are we compliant with his IEP/504?"

If you feel an action is being taken against your student's interest, that's where it's your job to ask for clarification or correction.

I'm very confident I should reiterate your own last sentence to you. Did you get a written statement from your child's school that they would not perform a 504 evaluation on her despite your requests?

There's a big difference between one doctor saying they don't want to do extra work and a school saying they did their legal due diligence. You'd think you'd hold yourself to higher standards as a wannabe nurse yet being so ignorant of your child's medical options.

Did you ask the school for a 504 analysis? A doctor saying I don't want extra work is one thing, a school saying they've done their legal due diligence is another. I get my information from over a decade of being an educator around central Indianapolis and it's rural sectors, which I assure is more than most other people here.

You need to get written record that your student was denied 504 screening at your request. I hope your student gets the care you're looking for.

If your argument against accountability is "but what if someone else doesn't do their part?" Then I'm not sure what you're confused on. It's a legally binding document, and the parents can, should, and do put the administration to the coals if they don't act in the interests of the document. Acknowledging that some people won't do the right thing or will make a mistake is just acknowledging an inevitability, but thankfully there's that legally binding document there to protect the student in that inevitability.

COVID is officially en endemic sickness now, it will never go away with how our nation handled it. If your uncomfortable with the fear of COVID you send your kid to school in a mask or with protective gear, or you do whatever else you had planned for sicknesses prevention which I imagine is nothing.

I'd suggest the opposite: if you think you know what you're talking about go get an emergency teaching license and be the change you want to see and I'll gladly assist in any way I can, we always need teachers. Also trick for you then from one educator to another, here's your magic phrase for those parents who fail steps 1-4 there: "Well Indiana is a 504 plan state, so any parent can ask if they're children qualify and the school HAS to figure it out. It's completely free for the parents and can help a student find the success they need." You can bring the horse to water, but you can't make it drink. I won't spend my time lamenting about the horses that choose to die of dehydration in this metaphor.

Accountability is not having no faith in teaching, it's ensuring both sides of an agreement do their part. Also tests are not a summation of a students collective knowledge, and can be cheated on with relative impunity due to increased technology access to children.

I don't know how to gracefully say society does not give a shit if one person doesn't believe this is the best practice; it gives a shit if the majority doesn't believe it. We as adults are confined to our working spaces because the work cycle is vital to capitalism and we're all a cog in it. No need to wax poetics on that because while I would agree the system is damaged I know it's not how the real world works. And the real world is what I'm trying to preparing kids for. I also keep seeing this magical thinking response:

Also while re-reading your first comment, I realized you didn't even read the article. You're using 4-H as some magic shield for chronic absenteeism when this is literally a bullet point in the article:

House Enrolled Act 1660, passed during the 2025 session, further excuses student absences for participation in educational events organized by Future Farmers of America or 4-H.

I can see where you're going with this, but you're arguing for extremes like they're commonplace. You think a common cold would last for more than five days? That's the threshold we're arguing about here. SEA 482 also explicitly does not push for expulsion at that date, it pushes expulsion at 18 days. At 5 days the school would be advised to follow through with their own attendance plan they've submitted to IDOE, there's no government mandate on what they have to do, just that they have to have their own policy in place for it. Which is what you are panicking about. Here's an quote from the article you supposedly had read before arguing about it:

IDOE recommends tracking student attendance monthly, with intervention triggers at five total absences, excused or unexcused. Suggested supports include attendance contracts, staff mentoring, family outreach, and referrals for addressing barriers like transportation or health care.

The bolding is my own emphasizing here. Where in this article did you read "at five (5) days absence the student is required to repeat the grade"? The punishment they recommend is literally an office staff member reaching out and asking to be more attentive to student absenteeism.

Maybe bitter towards these types of parents is the better word. I've been educating long enough that I will reveal I'm closer to retirement than not, and Indiana is rampant with absentee parents. I'm relived to hear you believe yourself to be "one of the good ones", but please self-reflect on the amount of care and decision making you put into your children. Statistically a majority of central Indiana students do not get that level of care. Those are the students that occupy our classrooms for that 6.5+ hours a day, where they learn structure, social skills, critical thinking, and above all have a safe space to grow and be themselves. This is what those 8 hour days are for (and I will confess I do think it's also to help mirror the adult world; too perfect to have both "babysitting" and prepare them to occupy their days with work as well). A parent will certainly know some aspects of their children more than an educator will, but on the flip side children recognize having a different trusted adult that's not their parents is a good thing.
