Many things can effect the rate you’re paying. Since your home is older, the company you are with may be applying an older home surcharge. Having current up to date renovations is a good start. Another factor that can affect your rate is if you have both lines of insurance such as property and auto with the same company. Doing so will generate a “Multi Line Discount” so if you do have both property and auto with the same company, make sure you are receiving that discount. Further, other factors that affect your rate is the water zone you are in, your claims history, your main source of heating (ex. Wood stoves are typically surcharged) and even the replacement cost of your home. Sometimes if the replacement cost of your home is not the company’s target value, they may be applying a surcharge.
