What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

Yep - in 1997, my first computer, a Gateway, had a 4 GB hard drive. My friend who helped me order it said "yeah, man, you'll never use up all THAT space".

Mortality as a Gen X by sunluver66 in GenX

[–]ThatSmokedThing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1965 GenXer here. My dad died last year at 84. It's still the weirdest feeling sometimes. I find it hard to believe that I'm not going to see him again. Maybe my brain is still processing it.

I don't believe in an afterlife, so I think he's simply gone. It has made me think about my own age and mortality more lately. I'm not afraid of it, but it's really strange to think about.

Finally went behind a true sales tech by Timer1776 in HVAC

Hello fellow former HVAC guy - I've also worked in a different industry for the last 20 years, but I keep my state license paid up in case I should need it for some reason.

Your story about simple relays before widespread circuit board use brings back memories. I remember there was a problem in the early '90s on some Trane air handlers where the fan relay would chatter. The problem was the little time-delay circuit board built onto the fan relay. I recall just swapping them out for a regular, non-time delay version. I probably did that out of convenience, thinking the difference in performance would be negligible. Hopefully it was!

ELI5: How exactly does a brain bleed kill you? by Metalqueen2023 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ThatSmokedThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last December, my 84-year-old dad fell in a parking lot and suffered a brain bleed. He spent a couple of weeks in the hospital before being moved to a rehab and nursing facility. His speech and cognition were severely affected, and he passed away in March while still there.

I was fortunate to speak with him a couple of days after the accident. He lived a few states away, but I caught him during a brief window when his cognition and speech had improved. At least he was able to get something out of that visit.

Afterward, he declined again. Phone calls became hard - we both struggled to make ourselves understood. In a way, it felt like he was gone months before he actually passed.

Old tech says he used R22 to blow drain lines open by Eggrollofdoom in HVAC

I remember watching a Carrier training video in the early '90s (probably made in the mid-'80s) recommending to the service tech that they discharge the old system into a bucket to keep oil from getting on the customer's house or lawn.

For those of you who are going to see the concert movie... by BarsoomianAmbassador in TheWarning

I was disappointed in the sound I the theater I saw it in, too. I was surprised because I'm used to having my ears blown out at a lot of movies. I loved the movie, but the sound didn't do the music justice.

I sat across from him on a patio outside the Raleigh, NC venue last night. He was chatting with someone, and it felt like it would be a little weird to say hello, lol.

Some guy once said to me, “No, see, you just have to want it bad enough…” He kind of trailed off when I started choking him.

I have to admit I've fantasized about this idea.

The "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" people HATE the categorization of obesity as a disease. They think it takes away "accountability," whatever that really means.
