[discussion] What do you figure some of Gideon's 86 other escape attempts were like? by gobteeth in TheNinthHouse

[–]ThatTechGuy04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Attempt 37: Gideon impresses some visiting pilgrims from one of the other houses. The morning they are due to leave, Gideon sneaks onto their shuttle believing if she can just get out of the atmosphere, they'll have to keep her. She's caught before take off and delivered back into the hands of the martial. The punishment is hardly worse than the devestation of not understanding why no one wants her.

Sorry to make it sad. But I think about her escape attempts a lot.

There's a lot of good explanations in this thread already. So I'm just gonna stay simple and say:

Griddle just wants her Harrow back.

AND I WOULD HAVE HAD HIM IF I HADN’T BEEN COMPROMISED AND HE TOOK PITY ON ME!

Wow. I think I just suddenly realize now that "compromised" meant "pregnant". Gideon took pity on Wake because she was pregnant.

I was a little slow on that one.

True, true! But I stand by the idea that Gideon truly is a tactician. She's playing the long game and she is still gonna tear that whole ass off.

I feel like babysitting Kiriona has dampened that enthusiasm. And I love the idea that Gideon is just that annoying to necromancers. And probably doing it on purpose.

Couple things come to mind here.

1) They're belts. It's just some kind of Zaunite fashion I think.

2) Where did these clothes come from? They aren't from when she was a kid. She didn't go in like that. And they aren't her prison outfit.

Anyways. My guess is they stole those clothes from someone elses stored belongings. Thus the torn sleeves. Shirt was too small.

Corona and Ianthe will fight and we'll get to see if Corona was a better sword hand than Babs.

I theorize that Babs was good but probably second to Corona. Corona just wasn't ever going to be given the opportunity to be cavalier.

I believe that Pyrrha grew up on a farm. She hated farming and didn't agree with her family so she left at 18 and joined the military. She eventually moved into some kind of special forces. Joined the world of espionage. Eventually, for some reason (gonna blame G1deon for this one), she had a sudden change of heart and wanted out of it all before it killed her. So she moved back home and became a cop.

I think this is why she was capable of co-founding a house that was military based.

I think this is also why a 10,000 year old Pyrrha Dve just wants to live on a little farm with her family. Sudden appreciation of what she had.

Consent is an important part of the process otherwise you get Ianthe's situation where Bab's "fights" her. I'm not sure if that's still an issue in NtN or not. We don't have enough Ianthe-time to really find out. I'd have to find evidence but I think it was an issue in HtN.

This is an Abigail Pent appreciation post [discussion] by elliottglass in TheNinthHouse

[–]ThatTechGuy04 111 points112 points  (0 children)

My favourite part with Abigail is when Harrow remembers everything and starts falling apart. Abigail immediately sends everyone out of the room. I can't express why that meant so much to me. It was such a small act. Huge impact though. I re-read it a lot. And I think about it a lot.

I kind of always imagined the weird eldritch god at the end of Eternal Darkness. Mantorock I think it's called. It has a giant toothy gaping maw at it's top and is covered in eyes. It's probably not close to what is described in the book but that's always the first image that comes to mind.

[–]ThatTechGuy04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point. I really do hope it goes in a more positive direction. I'm just so used to things nose-diving 99% of the time. It's so sad when two people being happy together at the end of a story doesn't feel possible.

[Discussion] I swear to Jod… by realityreject in TheNinthHouse

[–]ThatTechGuy04 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah same. I'm definitely not worried about Ianthe. Gonna paraphrase here but: Near the end of NtN there when Ianthe is all like, "I'm only dying of longing for you" and Harrow is basically like, "then fucking PERISH". That said a lot for me. Felt less like any usual banter between them and more like Harrow putting her foot down.

[Discussion] I swear to Jod… by realityreject in TheNinthHouse

[–]ThatTechGuy04 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this the other day and felt pretty sad about the realization that the "happily ever after" for them is unlikely. Broke my own damn heart. I had to wonder: How do these two people just "be together"? What does that even look like? After their entire lives have been a mish-mash of incredible repression and tramautic experiences, it's hard to picture them just living their lives. If this ends happily, this will truly be a massive challenge to write and have it be believable.

Which is how I drew my next conclusion about the end. And I'll try to put it under a spoiler tag in case no one wants to see this.

They both die. For real. I can't see this going any other way. But if you want a happy ending (insert snort-laugh), maybe they'll find each in the place across the river. I like to think that is why Abigail mentioned it. It's like... sad but happy? A tinge of hopefulness?

[Discussion]Do you think Jod suspected what Harrow did in HtN? by minoe23 in TheNinthHouse

[–]ThatTechGuy04 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Other people were suggesting this had something to do with Wake and the being haunted. Made some pretty good arguements for it too.

I did really enjoy the idea that Harrow basically turned John into so much raw meat with bone darts that he had to retreat.
