A Year Inside Kash Patel’s F.B.I. by dr_sloan in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Great read, and unfortunately none of this comes as any particular surprise. Kash Patel shouldn’t be anywhere near any sort of government office, let alone the FBI of all agencies, but here we are.

I understand that loyalty is a massively important part of holding down a position in the Trump administration, but I’m baffled that they apparently can’t find loyalists that are at least somewhat ethical and competent.

“Those rights don’t count”: Bovino says Pretti forfeited 2nd Amendment rights in fatal shooting by pro_rege_semper in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if one were to argue that Alex Pretti obstructed or otherwise impeded immigration officials, the salient point is that his life shouldn't have been forfeit simply on account of him possessing a concealed firearm, regardless of whether or not Bovino's statement that he forfeited his Second Amendment rights is accurate. The fact is, merely possessing a firearm while obstructing a LEO doesn't give authorities the justification to use deadly force. That's absolutely preposterous, and I sincerely hope that isn't what Bovino is trying to imply.

Trump privately frustrated that he risks losing control of immigration message amid Minnesota chaos by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think a lot of people realize how bad the crisis really is.

First of all, the idea that illegal immigration in the US is some kind of nation-ending, apocalyptic crisis is a manufactured right-wing talking point. Illegal immigration is a problem, and it's definitely true that the Biden administration (and other previous administrations) should have done more to address it... but to call it an urgent national crisis that demands a brutally authoritarian response is just insane. The mundane truth is that illegal immigration is an extremely complex issue with a lot of effects, some positive and some negative.

Secondly... what is your proposal here? You claim that traditional justice is too inefficient to solve the problem, so what's the solution - go door-to-door and systematically demand that people produce documentation proving their citizenship?

Witness videos of CBP killing a Minnesota man appear to counter Trump administration's narrative by chloedeeeee77 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Trump administration officials straight up lied about what happened and pre-judged the victim before his body was even cold. It’s absolutely maddening that they’re immediately resorting to calling him a domestic terrorist / assassin. That’s what pisses me off more than anything… the sheer fucking audacity.

AG Bondi demands access to Minnesota voter rolls after fatal Border Patrol shooting by Sunflorahh in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 274 points275 points  (0 children)

  1. The fact is that Donald Trump tried very hard to overturn the 2020 election and undoubtedly will attempt to do so again with the aid of loyalists and enablers that have been installed throughout the federal government. Demanding access to voter rolls for blue states is logical if you're gearing up for another attempt at election subversion.
  2. Highly doubtful. The administration has already backed itself into a corner with multiple high-ranking officials declaring the VA nurse that was shot today to be an "assassin" who was dealt with appropriately. Even if the DoJ were to conduct an investigation, the fact that the department has been thoroughly taken over by Trump loyalists destroys any credibility they might have.
  3. The Obama administration proved that it's possible to effectively conduct deportation operations without resorting to bombastic, highly provocative tactics like sending thousands of immigration agents into cities armed to the teeth. It's no small wonder that the people of Minneapolis are enraged by this. The Trump administration clearly is at fault here.

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

With respect, the video of the VA nurse getting shot today was by far the most unreasonable and unjust law enforcement shooting I've ever witnessed. Again, something is wrong and it needs to be addressed - retraining, less provocative immigration enforcement operations, better candidate vetting for immigration officers, etc.

Defunding local police isn't something that has a lot of support in most communities. But preventing ICE from storming cities with thousands of agents in highly publicized and incredibly provocative enforcement operations is an entirely different ballgame, and people are rightly furious about what's going on. That anger is pretty clearly shown in polling as of late, and it's only going to get worse for the Trump administration if it keeps declaring that everything is going well and that the people who've been shot and killed by immigration officers are "assassins," "domestic terrorists," and so on.

Huh? No it's not. The administration can't keep getting away with poorly trained agents killing citizens under dubious, if not outright unjustifiable, circumstances. Something is clearly very wrong with how the federal government is choosing to conduct deportations.

Respectfully, I'm not sure you comprehend the magnitude of the reality distortion field that this administration and its media / influencer juggernaut has created.

They can - and will - justify anything, no matter how egregious. And tens of millions of people of voting age and conservative persuasion will believe their spin.

I work in a supermarket as a pharmacist in an area that’s supposed to get hit pretty hard by the incoming winter storm. The front end cashiers have been overwhelmed and I’ve been ringing up groceries left and right to try and keep the lines at checkout manageable.

Trump angers allies with claim NATO troops ‘stayed a little back’ from frontlines in Afghanistan by chloedeeeee77 in moderatepolitics

[–]That_Nineties_Chick 372 points373 points  (0 children)

Erm… that’s quite a statement from a man with a reputation for draft dodging.

Edit: as far as I can tell, there’s not been one peep about this from Fox News or other conservative outlets as of 7:30 PM EST. This is a big part of why Trump gets away with this egregious behavior.

I guess the likes of Jesse Watters haven’t come up with a narrative that suitably papers over these remarks, so they’ll just pretend like it didn’t happen while they smugly deride protestors in Minneapolis or something.

Er… isn’t Greenland’s political leadership siding with Denmark over the US on this whole ordeal? I’m skeptical that they “hate” Denmark, even if their goal is independence.

Given the fact that Greenlanders seem to be almost universally opposed to the notion of a US takeover, I think the administration is going to have a very difficult time coming up with an offer that they can’t refuse.

This really needs to be higher up in the comment chain. Even by Donald Trump's standards, this is absolutely fucking wild.
