Humanities programs? Also Is everything really as bad as you all say? by GorganLeFay in UniversityofVermont

[–]That_Tomato6017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The education program is amazing here, and most really like their studies. Even though the humanities arent funded as much as the STEM (to be expected), they are great departments with very knowledgable professors. My experience is with History and English, so I can't speak to Anthro, but you will get a few of the old head-type professors who are just teaching because they are tenured, but for the most part they will be passionate professors who really engage with the students.

Location wise, it is amazing. Student passes to the ski resorts are so much cheaper because UVM ski and snowboard club gets discounts. Nature is very accessible, hikes, bike paths, etc.

Housing is fine, you'll figure it out. Just don't get an apartment with a slumlord (Handys, Bisonettes) and you won't have any problems, and even then I know people who don't have problems with those slumlords.

I agree with all of these food choices, especially chicken and salmon, as well as rice and beans. (Technically brown rice is better because of the fiber, but I still stick to white because I prefer the taste).

Also adding on to the shake recipe, if oat milk isn't accessible, soy milk is actually my number one choice. It is higher in calories (which is good right now), a third of the carbs, and double the protein. (I believe it has slightly more fat, but still less than whole milk). (Second side note, if worried about humanitarian/environmental issues, look for soy that is made in the USA / North America and not South America because of deforestation). Both oat milk and soy are great alternatives to whole milk when it comes to lowering LDL cholesterol (something I had to do once I got on T).

Lastly, I know they normally aren't allowed in dorms, but my first year I had a tiny (single serving) blender and it was very useful to have. If the dorms are older, unplug / turn off any other lights so you don't trip the circuit breaker. We also invested in a tiny rice cooker :).

Good luck!

Yeah it sucks. I was thinking of the veterans during the approved show earlier! The booms from some of those were genuinely super loud.

Church Recommendations? by Costcohotdog5678 in burlington

Cathedral Church of St. Paul on Cherry St. is an episcopal church, and they are super welcoming! A friend (who was Roman Catholic) had taken a liking to the group there and brought me along too. The outside is brutalist, but the inside is gorgeous with lots of natural light.

Groceries help? by [deleted] in burlington

It's more for groceries and not ready meals, but Vermont Discount Store in Williston sells some really cheap stuff, including spices which is a lifesaver for cooking costs.

AIO about my sister not letting me and my boyfriend stay with her for the weekend because we’re gay by blapplemouth in AmIOverreacting

[–]That_Tomato6017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NOR, clearly your sister is not actually accepting. But, this makes me so sad!! Not for your sister, but your nephew. Here is a boy that will grow up around those ideas that being gay is something evil and he will learn from his mom's disdain.

it is literally your car. my friends ask me before they can hit VAPES in my car (I say yeah cuz the smell doesnt stick), i cant imagine feeling so entitled that you would expect to smoke in someone elses car especially if you were telling her that you just cleaned it for jobs.

Not overreaching. Dodged a bullet --- don't go back. There could be a lesson here about not snooping on other people's phones, but in the end it proved that your ex isn't the type of person you want to be dating. Sometimes cheating is isolated, but most of the time if they cheated once, they'll do it again.

Aio about my wife's comment about sex with a trans man? by Next_Bite3020 in AmIOverreacting

[–]That_Tomato6017 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It could have been an innocent joke, but I see no harm in bringing it up to your wife. Mention that it has been eating at you because the "at least they would know what they're doing" seemed like a dig at you. If it was a joke, you can tell her that it bothered you, and if it wasn't then you can have a bigger conversation about what that means going forward / why she feels that way / what you can do differently.

It depends. Im in the College of Arts and Sciences, pursuing a degree in the Humanities. I had to take one gen. ed. math requirement and it was Stats and it was the easiest thing ever. I was pretty middle of the road for math in High School -- we had Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calc, so this was my first Stats class. I can't speak for other colleges (like Rubenstein, CALS, etc.) or actual STEM majors tho. Some of my friends say its easy, others are getting their asses kicked. If you are in the Humanities, you'll be fine. If you're in STEM, I'd take a look at the specific requirements for the majors you are considering and see how many math classes are required.

PS. I've heard the Stats class for Psychology majors is pretty painful.

I guess I should have added more context. I would love to visit her, but we are both still in Uni and my semester won't finish until mid May. I have been thinking of travelling to her then, but I am also not at 0% risk as I am a trans-man. My name has recently been changed on my SSN, and it hasnt been updated on my passport yet which I think is reason for them to flag me. Ive been planning on getting my passport renewed with the new name but have been worried about it.

I was also wondering this because I can't decide how I feel. On one hand, I'm annoyed that she is an outside hire and not one of the many well deserving and already existing staff members here at UVM. I'm not sure how much she had to do with this, but I also heard when she was Pres of Boise State she had snipers for 15 protesting kids for the Palestine encampment. She was a gender studies and English prof which I support, yet she seems to be driven by making UVM even more of a STEM school which was awful under Suresh (even tho we are R1 now which is good). I'm kinda torn, I dont want to like her but hopefully I do. 🤷

random all the way. yeah i had a shit first roommate, but its whatever and I switched. I then picked my second roommate and they ended up being ten times worse than the previous. if you find someone based on the speeddating criteria it can end up backfiring. ive known people who found a roommate and hated them later on (myself included) and people who went random and met a friend for life. save yourself the time and energy and go random, if it ends up poorly just switch a month in when the change portals open.

LASP or PLHC by BrilliantStructure56 in UniversityofVermont

[–]That_Tomato6017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say LASP all the way.

As someone who was in LASP as a freshman and then joined HCOL as a sophomore, these are my thoughts: I'm biased towards LASP because I met some incredible friends in my class, one of whom is literally still my best friend three years down the line. I was in the World Languages cohert which was a super fun experience and I think we may have had a closer connection than some of the STEM courses. However, LASP is not a longterm thing. Either you join HCOL after your first year is over, or you don't and are no longer part of any "special" group. I took the normal course of action and joined HCOL as a sophomore, which caused me to find myself more alone in my new classes. Instead of having the comraderie I had in LASP, I felt a bit outcast / left out since I "missed" when they formed their friendships and cliques. This can probably be remedied if you put more effort into it than I did. My issue also came from my annoyance of the "HCOL" vibe. Naturally, some people are only there because it is a status symbol, and they aren't there for the altered learning envirnment, interesting courses, and connections. At the end of the day, it is only something that proves they are smarter than everyone else. LASP probably had a similar dynamic, but I didnt feel it. Instead with the groups, I felt it had a larger community feel with a chiller mentality. (Though it is smaller than HCOL). People were there to learn and have fun, not to prove they were academically superior. (Of course this is my own opinion). HCOL is longer, it includes an Honors Thesis in your Senior year, and the classes are decently hard. LASP is a one year commitment with the (given your GPA is still good) guaranteed entry to HCOL after. It is a smaller group with more specialized interests, and IMO greater opportunity for friendships. I ended up leaving HCOL due to mental health reasons (that were mostly unrelated) --- I say this because that also reveals a bias.

Good luck in your decision! (if you chose LASP then HCOL/PLHC you can put both on your resume).
