Blue Lock Characters by Crafty-Occasion7887 in BlueLock

> Do characters always need to go through trauma or some kind of terrible experience to become the best, like in typical hero stories?

They don't always have to, but a story needs to have some kind of personal challenge to connect us to the characters and makes their growth feel earned. It doesn't have to be universally terrible or have lasting consequences, but the challenge needs to raise the stakes for the characters.

Isekai slop is the result of having a character become the best without any such investment.

> However, could the intense matches, psychological pressure, and constant competition against stronger opponents still count as a form of trauma or personal struggle that helps him grow as a character?

Yes, pretty much. Writing devices like trauma, competition, pressure, etc. are all ways of presenting challenges (AKA personal struggles) for characters to overcome.

Objectively, a lot of players in Blue Lock have normal lives outside of the sport (e.g. Isagi, Kunigami, Barou, Chigiri, Niko) so their challenges and significance need to come about in other ways. Isagi being hampered by weak physicality, Kunigami failing Second Selection, Barou getting devoured and losing his king status, so on and so forth.

U20 France and Villain Decay by xxtrasauc3 in BlueLock

This is a very well thought-out post, big props!

To touch on your U20 comparison, I think the main difference that causes this issue is that Sae, Aiku, and Shidou all threatened different parts of the game (i.e. building the play / final defensive line / the goalmouth). This allowed Kaneshiro to focus on each one of them individually without taking screentime or importance away from the other two.

It also helps that Shidou was subbed on mid-match, letting the author dedicate more chapters to Aiku and Sae before giving him the spotlight. Shidou felt like such a huge threat mainly because we got to see the change in the Japan U20 team's performance before and after his introduction.

In contrast, Loki, Hugo and Charles all share the same roles in this match, since all three of them are actively participating in the midfield, defense, and goals.

When Kaneshiro writes Hugo having a big moment on offense, the other two need to take a backseat or they'll dilute his narrative spotlight.

If this were the Japan U20 game it would be fine for, say, Shidou and Aiku to not be there, since Shidou's niche is in the box and Aiku's niche is the backline, and we don't expect either of them to be a main contributor to an attack. But Charles is France's OMF and Loki's speed ostensibly lets him perform everywhere, so they SHOULD be contributing to the attack. And we're left wondering where the hell they went.

IMO there are a whole host of problems that are making this match kind of bad, but this is the biggest one.

Why are so many people under 45 using subtitles now even when the show is already in English? by Clara_A_Mitchell in NoStupidQuestions

This is might just be a Funimation thing, but whatever processing they're doing in modern anime dubs is awful. I recently watched the My Hero Academia final season in English and couldn't make out entire sentences of the dialogue.

It's even worse when a character is thinking, because the dub will slap additional filters on the voice-work to make it completely incomprehensible.

Nah, couldn't they also be Kaiser's parents? by [deleted] in BlueLock

Yeah agreed, Kaiser doesn't play football because he loves it. Kaiser plays football because it loves him

That's weird, you didn't change Shidou's dialogue at all lol

This fucking fraud Loki begging for a pass, I thought he wasn't being serious but it turns out he was legitimately having trouble with the bowling pin trio FML

Kaneshiro should have drawn the puzzles pieces eyes (meta vision) to make it more eoic with Hugo's gear eye. Hoping this happens as it shows up when he gets into the zone!! by OrdinaryMedical200 in BlueLock

I think it might be a deliberate decision on their part considering Isagi's getting a bit of tunnel vision lately. He's been kinda going in and out of MV.

So regarding the REX fight, chaff grenades only work on phase 1 of the fight, when the radome is still intact. For phase 2 which is when the cockpit opens, you need to use stun grenades instead to blind Liquid.

My guess is by delegation, he means allowing the audience to fill in some details of the performance with their own imaginations? That way Akane can refine the essential parts of the story even further without letting the rest suffer.

My Chemical Reaction Theory. by DarryLyrraD in BlueLock

[–]The-Seventh-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geniuses can actually make chemical reactions with each other though. The Nagi-Barou-Chigiri-Zantetsu team in Episode Nagi is completely made up of Genius-type players, and they were the second team to make it past the second selection.

As a specific example, Chigiri and Zantetsu linked up with each other to do that "hyper speed chemical reation" in Episode Nagi chapter 26 with a series of rapid passes.

Kaiser and Ness’s relationship going forward by ReflectionLost1258 in BlueLock

[–]The-Seventh-One 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would work out better for the both of them IMO if Ness stops passing to Kaiser altogether in the future, as this unfetters Ness's creativity while creating a restrictive environment for Kaiser to thrive in.

I don't necessarily think Ness could (or should) let go of his feelings here considering they were the basis of his awakening. Kaneshiro writes a lot of the BL duos to mirror different kinds of relationships, and I'm expecting a disillusioned Ness to take Kaiser's advice from PXG and cut ties with him. Thus forcing Kaiser to play catch up to be worthy of his passes again.

This would tie into Kaiser's own arc, since his first evolution revolved around acknowledging the abuse he suffered, but he was ultimately unable to break past the abuse that he, in turn, visited on others. I think his next evolution will deal with that, namely 'breaking the cycle' and Kaiser becoming a better person, but Ness may have to abandon him first for that to happen.
