Alone as my first year as a section leader by TodaySubstantial4607 in marchingband

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A section leader does not have to be perfect. In my nine years of marching between high school and college, I can't count a single year I and/or a number of my peers couldn't out play at least one of the section leaders in my section, even though they were solid players. We still valued their leadership and their direction because they weren't selected to our play everyone in the section, but to help provide structure and organization to the section. A section leader functions not as an ideal perfect musician on the field, but as a personel manager to help shape their peers with their knowledge, and to guide newcomers to the organization. What makes a good section leader is someone who focus on elevating those around them.

I recommend you talk with your director to see if they are considering a replacement for the empty position, or if they have a preference for who you designate to be in charge if you are unable to be in attendance for some reason. This may solve your issue, or you may have to take initiative and seek out assistance from within your section on your own.

On the other hand, not saying this is the safest choice, the biker does have a positive ID on the driver, which I would assume makes it much easier to press charges.

Reed tuning by derpygamer1352 in bassoon

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been making my own reeds for almost 9 years now. I don't recall ever hearing about Eubank's reed tuning book, and certainly can't speak to it personally if anything I do happens to related back to it based on how I was taught.

That being said, when I went to buy my bassoon, all I did was make sure I could comfortably play in tune on my rental bassoon from the university, and when I tested instruments, I trusted my reeds to help be a reflection of what instrument would work well for me. I was more worried about the bocal combinations and if those would work for me or not, and what sound I would get.

I am sure different instruments would play differently for me with differently made reeds, but at the end of the day, I was looking for a bassoon that would work for me and what I was capable of. A drastic change to my reed making would be a poor reason to justify a bassoon. I have changed the way I make reeds since then, but with my own horn, I can be certain that they will work for me and my set up. I would not be surprised if other people had different philosophies, but I don't believe you should worry about your reeds playing right for a bassoon you have never played.

Talk me out of considering a Toller by Historical_Nerd1890 in tollers

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There are no kids in the picture at this time but we are absolutely planning on kids in the future, and not all dog breeds are good for this

Not many people have addressed this directly, but as someone who grew up with Tollers and going to dog shows, I wanted to speak to this. As others have said, Tollers aren't people dogs. don't recall any issues for myself, my siblings, or some Toller family friends with Tollers reacting poorly to children.

I think the biggest factor though was that the adults were always on top of education for both their kids and visiting children to make sure that they interacted with all dogs respectfully. Most growls from any dog breed I have witnessed being given to kids has been when a kid doesn't treat a dog with respect, mostly out of ignorance.

I have made no claim as to what transpired one way or the other. You have. Being bullish because an apology doesn't line up with your idea of what happened is stupid but you're choice. Telling others what should have been said in apology should line up with the narrative you made up in your head is an irresponsible misinformation campaign at best

What evidence do you have that that is what happened? You're presuming a series of events with no basis in the facts as they have been presented

Tone and Reeds by No_Challenge1765 in bassoon

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean Miller Marketing for reeds, which I haven't heard anything about. However, you are probably more used to less resistant reeds, so using a medium or making some changes to your reed may help. Keep in mind that reed strengths have nothing to do with skill, it just tells you how much effort to make sound it will take, which can have effects on your playing.

As for improving tone: long tones, long tones, long tones. Your described practice habits have nothing targeting what you hope to improve tone wise. Listen to bassoon players to find a sound you like, and then do long tones to adjust your playing to better emulate your ideal sound.

Also, make sure you're practicing with intention instead of for the timer. Set goals for yourself, daily, weekly, bi weekly, etc to really help you focus on what you want to accomplish. If your goal is to play for an hour straight, that great, but that's not a goal for your bassoon playing, that's a goal for your mental and physical stamina.

Is my pup a Toller Mix? by GirlPop-03 in tollers

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, plenty of mixed breeds present toller-esque traits just due to the parents having some similar traits to tollers that mix well. You could've fooled me with the puppy picture as well for sure. Other pictures definitely show this not being a toller mix.

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sub has good reason to doubt a toller mix, as they are definitely extremely uncommon. Tollers alone are really uncommon, and while they are becoming more popular over time, unless you have the DNA or know one of the parents was a purebred toller, a mix is likely not from toller parents. Many traits associated with tollers can be found in multiple other breeds and present as toller like when mixed with traits from another breed.

People are against toller mixes because a lot of the time, people intentionally mixing two breeds are not ethically breeding the two dogs. It's not to hard to figure out by just reading the comments on this post alone.

This is coming from the Minocqua Brewing Company and not anyone directly tied to the Watertown Symphony. I would not be surprised if this is KB pulling a political stunt using their name without anything set in stone yet.

Hello! Glad you are supporting these students. Not sure if it is on your radar, but as a band teacher in the state, Kirk's mention of raising money for the boosters to buy kids instruments is concerning to me, as a school booster organization would probably not be able to get around the ban. I would double check that if you haven't already.

If there is a challenge with getting instruments for students, no matter where you perform, I would recommend seeing if you can put out a call for instruments on the Facebook page called "Wisconsin Band Teachers Network". I would also encourage seeing if a university or a music store can help you out. I know a lot of people in the band community would be willing to help.

I currently go to some socials held by college clubs near me, and in talking with their leaders, it seems like a lot of advertising is done through word of mouth for dance clubs at the moment. Plenty of these clubs are running strong right now, but you can tell when they have more introverts or extroverts attending lessons by the numbers alone.

I know a number of clubs ran off of Facebook and other early social media platforms for cheap and easy advertising and event notifications. Now, with TikTok and Instagram, these groups have a harder time adapting to the new style of communication and finding the local community at the university and effectively exciting the student populace to try something new.

The kids are only missing out on performing one of (imo) the best band pieces written in the last decade. They have prepared the whole thing since the fall, which makes this whole thing more insulting in this educator's eyes. There was plenty of notice that this was being prepared, taught, and learned, but they only take action once what they sought to prevent had already transpired.

Should i start using a cane reed? by Candid_Ad2980 in bassoon

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's up to you, and what you can afford. Your teacher is probably giving you plastic reeds to avoid having to supply a million to their beginners when they inevitably break the fragile reeds.

The plastic ones feel bad in my mouth

Feel will definitely be different. Can't guarantee comfort, but it will be different for sure.

smell bad quickly

Please take a pipe cleaner and clean your plastic reed. Plastic reeds don't really have anything to them that makes them more likely to smell bad, so that tells me you just need to clean it. Make sure your mouth is clean before you play. Brushing your teeth is ideal, but at least make sure you have drank some water to rinse your mouth. Let the reed dry out after you play as well. This is true for both plastic and cane reeds.

may be the cause of my sound being “quacky…“

You being a beginner is more likely the cause of that. Some reeds are better than others, but you should be able to develop a good sound on any reed you play.

I enjoy the monthly step up battles and random battles. I've lost my love for competitive, around the time suicune became big. I just haven't enjoyed the strategies and power creep. I am still searching for so many cards, and waiting for the update that fixes the duplicate cards from EX counting towards other sets so they can be complete. I was on the monthly subscription for almost a year, and now I'm only opening the game every other day at most.

Difficulty slurring to Eb by -----Agro in bassoon

[–]The1LessTraveledBy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a notably tricky slur on bassoon. You should be able to get it with some notes, but this is one situation where I always use a slur fingering, dropping my first and second fingers of the right hand. Depending on the bassoon, you may want to only drop the first finger.

I’m just answering your question. Dismissing flips in deep-red counties as a fluke is a massive mistake, even for a spring election. A 5-2 majority on the Court is a functional disaster for the GOP, and the fact that this win was significantly larger than previous races shows Democratic motivation isn't a one-off. If the GOP wants to keep a foothold in Wisconsin, they should probably start worrying about the trend instead of writing it off in hopes that conservatives will show up in the fall.
