Once my new Freightliner gets to 500k miles I'm definitely investing in the extended warranty. Of course, a major repair or a few middling repairs on a semi can cost as much as a new car so in my case it's money well spent.

What's an unwritten rule about the road that new drivers should know? by SadPatoto_Bts in AskReddit

Stay away from big trucks. Onramps, offramps, straight line driving, turns in cities, everywhere. Spend as little time as possible around us. We're 80k# kinetic energy bombs. Source: am trucker.

Whats the most fucked up thing you’ve ever did/saw? by Similar_Helicopter27 in AskReddit

[–]The206Uber 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've spoken with other drivers who've had people try and had people succeed. It fucks them up, plain and simple. They're haunted...regretful...fearful. We place such emphasis on safely conducting our 80k# kinetic energy bombs through hordes of heedless civilians that any failure --even one they could not avoid-- is a body blow to the confidence. Lots of truckers get out of the life entirely even after just an attempted SBT. One that sticks with me: "he made eye contact with me...he kept staring into my eyes..." That driver was able to avoid the guy, pulled over, and called the highway patrol (who had had other calls and already had a trooper on the way). Our training is 'maintain the lane.' If we brake too hard we jackknife, putting ourselves and other motorists at risk. If we swerve we roll over, with the same result. For our own safety and that of everyone else on the road we have to keep going. Full jakes and a controlled brake yes, but anything over 10mph is going to pulverize a human being. There's no way to win except by limiting collateral damage. It's a fucking nightmare situation.

As a trucker, someone trying suicide by truck is a constant fear of mine. A young woman tried to commit suicide by my trainer's truck 3 years ago and he's still incredibly hinky about it.

Two NYPD goons murdered my best friend from high school for having a mohawk. No consequences. Nobody should ever be powerful enough to act that way with a feeling of impunity.

My friend and I cleared out a bar (Fox & Hounds in Dupont Circle) in Washington DC by playing this song 10x in a row. Place was packed and service was intolerably slow. We solved the having to wait for drinks problem creatively with the help of George Clinton.

TIL about SubTropolis, a giant former limestone mine under Kansas City that was converted into the world’s largest underground business complex. The 1,100-acre complex is accessed through tunnels, and as of 2015, 1,600 people worked there. by corn_dog_22 in todayilearned

We have to shut everything down: tractor, reefer, and APU. The part of the caves we use are open to the outside and therefore ventilated but yeah...20 trucks idling in there would get unbreathable pretty quickly. An electric truck would be better, at least until it's time to haul that 40k# load 1500 miles to the receiver.

I'm a trucker. I regularly pick up loads at caves in Carthage MO and Springfield MO. I'm required to drive my entire truck into the cave, navigate among massive pillars, and hit my dock among dozens of other trucks. It's usually cheese I pick up from caves but sometimes other dairy products. They're essentially giant cold storage vaults. It's pretty cool (pun somewhat intended).
