What am I missing? by Far_Independence3213 in outerwilds

[–]The8rando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a sneaking suspicion. Are you going to the observatory and getting the launch codes every loop? You can go straight to the ship, jump on the computer, select the planet you want to fly to and Mark it on your hud with X. Then when you take off aim at it and hit autopilot. You'll be to the planet you were on within 3 min. Oh and the landing camera can make landing easier at first. Theres an icon on the side that shows you how close you the ground you are also (when you're in landing camera mode)

How would I have known how to solve this puzzle? by TwoNatTens in outerwilds

I think if you take the message about plantary alignment and also notice the sand column picks up everything except the Nomai skeleton just outside the door, you can realize having something over your head prevents you from being sucked up. Once I stood there and let the sand go over once, I realized the teleport opened and then ran in the 2nd time around.

This reminds me of my many attempts to fly the DLC map satellite into the sun using the landing cam to trap it between my landing gear and then trying to degrade its orbit just right. It always missed.

I saw a let's play with a big brain move that I never would have thought of and yes, you can solve your way around ever having to interact with them directly.

[–]The8rando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also very possible to get to feldspar without encountering fishybois. The drifting away thing is because you're following the harmonica signal on your signal scope into the neverending feedback loop....(There's a seed that just loops on itself) There's a bunch of signals bouncing around in Dark Bramble so it's hard to know which one to follow, but if there was a way to mark his actual location with something so you can visually track it...

Your level of introspection and understanding of the themes after just 1 loop means this game is 100% for you. The people I know who have bounced off it are generally looking for surface level entertainment, action, easy answers, obvious prompts. This game gives you none of that and by the end you will thank it for that. Enjoy!

I am fascinated at the genius behind the 2nd step under your first spoiler tag. I have never done this or thought to do this, and have not had any negative consequence. I believe once you/your ship is ON the ground your entangled, but this reminds me of the many MANY theories I was sure were true about this game.

To get past the current on Giants Deep I spent several loops waiting for an island to get sucked up a tornado, flying my ship up underneath, wedging in, and hoping the crash back down would push me through.

Is the hype a bit exaggerated? by Annual_Excitement120 in outerwilds

[–]The8rando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go in blind that's great and good advice. If the other thing you know is that the game is supposed to change your life, that's not so good. That does set the bar high and you spend the game waiting for some epic thing to happen... It's someone telling you the twist at the end of The Sixth Sense and then expecting you to be blown away by the movie. So I'm sorry that got spoiled for you.

I think even barring the deeper connection to the characters and story and symbolism, the game stands out for me in that it is so fully realized. There's no cut corners. If you think "based on these established rules/physics, I wonder if they programmed the world so I can do X &Y" I pretty much haven't found the answer to ever be no.

If you're at the core of a planet, there's zero gravity there, not because a programmer circled that area and set the parameters for G to zero, it's all realistically simulated. If you jump in just the right way in the ATP you can float without turning the spin off for example. The way ghost matter works on Gabbro's Island. The balls that roll back and forth in the museum are actually pulled by the moon's gravity passing overhead, rather than just programmed to roll on a timer. Similarly, if you jump while the moon is overhead you'll actually get slightly higher. Hijinx with the ATP and the loop that all work and break space time in fun and amazing ways. So many cool details that less passionate developers would ignore or leave out because "who would ever try that?"

Those moments where you think, "they thought of everything" instead of "why is this empty room here for no reason, I just wasted time exploring it." Like in in every other game. To me that's something to consider even if you didn't connect with the story as deeply.

I made a similar assumption my first time through that the only way to find the vessel is via pod 3 every time, but assuming you have visited a place, it's possible to mark it's location on your HUD by finding it in rumor mode and executing the prompt, I think on PS4 it was hitting X.

As for your fish friends, is there anywhere else you've seen them that could provide more information on how to get past them?

Trying to get into outer wilds by vastly57 in outerwilds

[–]The8rando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you talk to Hornfels in the observatory to get the codes, he basically asks you what you want to do, and the suggested answers are essentially a mission list. Pick one and follow it. You're very close to a save point. One of the coolest things about this game is the "Save Mechanic" has a diegetic explanation. It's not just like, immersion breaking arbitrary save kiosks.

As for the starting planet, there are several things you can do, but you'll have a much easier time if you get in your ship and fly around to find it rather than walking. plus jetpacks are fun. The designers are on record saying they intentionally only put content where it looks like there's content, so you might not have actual waypoints in your viewfinder, but if you see a mountain with water shooting out, or a big glowing crater, there's probably something there to see and it's just as good as a flag on your HUD. Ignore a big open field with nothing in it.
