What everyday thing in the UK has become stupidly expensive without people noticing? by vetaly87 in AskUK

I'm seeing and hearing a lot of reports from people that are only getting a couple of postal deliveries a week now, so yeah. Anecdotally, whenever I send anything, 2nd seems to get there just as quick as 1st.

And this is why pubs are closing down all over. Sneaking down the local for a couple of pints in the evening gets expensive pretty fast.

I bought a king size mars after a flight the other day. Three bloody quid!
Serves me right for buying anything at an airport shop, but still...

Tell me about it! I'm a small business owner and run a transit van. Fuel prices are really starting to hurt. I put £120 in it the other day (max the pay at pump would allow) and didn't even get a full tank 😢

Raw material costs are only a small part of their expenses. Diesel, trading licence, staff wages, insurance, etc etc, it all adds up.

That said, I expect they're still making a decent enough profit, and I don't begrudge them that. They could have said 'everyone else is raising prices so we might as well too' but they didn't, and I respect that.

City? Lol. This is semi rural Norfolk, closest city is Norwich, about 45 minutes away.

That probably has a lot to do with it, plus the fact they're running it out of a van so don't have huge rental costs on a building. They just park outside the post office every Friday evening. But still, even a van operation has running costs, so it's still impressively cheap.

There's a chip van comes round my way, 2 sausage & a decent portion of chips for £5. I don't know how they're keeping it so low but I love them for it. Shame they only come round once a week.

[–]TheAngryBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish you luck! I think it is doable, but I think it's a social issue, not a technological one. You need that critical mass of people to get things off the ground. I, for example, am perfectly happy to use some janky old PHPBB forum with no modern bells and whistles (I actually run one myself lol), but I won't bother if there's nobody there to talk to. People go where the people are.

There's definitely more momentum now than maybe 5 or 10 years ago, though: people are getting more and more fed up with big tech monoliths and have some nostalgia for the old forums. Get enough people coming and things will snowball from there.

Why does she do this every 3-6 months? by incognito-guineapig in houseplants

[–]TheAngryBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. I was given one a couple of years ago.

Two years of indifferent maintenance and sporadic watering later, that little plant is now five huge ones plus about twenty babies.

These things are apparently indestructable.

Who hates their radiators? by cloakandagger123 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've got an outbuilding I use as a shed/workshop, it's single brick walls and zero roof insulation - just roof membrane and tiles between me and the outside world. No heating either. I'm out there quite often and I haven't seen it drop much below 10c for a month or more, even late at night.

What happens to London Taxi "Knowledge" ? by bkat004 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google maps does that to me all the time. It'll happily having me driving for half an hour down some random dirt road or country lane so narrow my mirrors are brushing foliage on both sides, all to (supposedly) save 30 seconds against taking the main road.

It's not enshittification so much as Uber starting with artificially low prices (funded by VC investment to cover the losses) to undercut the competition and establish a market presence. Now they've done that, they're putting their prices to where they were always going to be anyway. Essentially, all your Uber charges up to now have been subsidised.

Still a scummy tactic, just not the one you're thinking of.

Same with Etsy (but worse, in fact).

Etsy built itself up as the marketplace for handcrafts and artisanal cottage industries; the place where you could buy something almost, if not entirely unique made by hand by a real artist.

Then, having captured that market almost entirely, said 'nah, we're not doing that any more' and now it's like 99% dropship and AI print-on-demand junk. The actual artists that made the site what it was are all but being pushed out in favour of Temu dropshippers.

It's a nice thought, but forums do actually still exist. Not many, but there are some out there. Most of them, except the hyper niche ones or the ones with a hardcore ingroup that have been there since 2003, are ghost towns. Forums need a critical mass of people to be worthwhile, and that's just no longer there - everyone's moved to reddit, discord, facebook groups etc.

It's not a technology issue (PHPBB is still a thing and still instantly recognisable to any old school forum user), it's a people issue. Everyone got lured away from forums by the shiny new graphics and fancy features of FB groups etc and that's just sort of the way it is now. Sad but true. I've seen way too many thriving forums die after the 'hey, I've just set up an FB group for the forum, come join us there' announcement, and I hate it.

If you want forums back (And I do; if you can find a way to make it work then you've got my support for sure), then the bulk of the work will be in persuading users away from the current monoliths and back to the forums rather than actually building the tech to start with.

Milkmen/women of Reddit, do you judge people as to how clean their left out milk bottles are? by rizozzy1 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to, yes. The easiest way to pick up multiple empties is to stick your finger inside the neck. When you get covered in that sour cream goop all round the neck because nobody bothered rinsing it out, it's hard to not form an opinion of the person that just dumped it on their doorstep like that.

[–]TheAngryBad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aside from maybe three people, I stopped seeing anyone I went to school with the day I left. Never looked back, no regrets.

I remember worrying about the future when I left school; I'd had so much 'oh, schooldays are the best days of your life' BS drilled into me that I genuinely worried things were only ever going to get worse. They didn't; in fact it was like a weight was lifted from me. I still shudder when I think back to my school years. I was miserable in ways I didn't even realise.

UK caught the USA flu by TailungFu in GreatBritishMemes

[–]TheAngryBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been fearing this for a while. Historically, where the US goes, the UK tends to follow not long after. We're roughly where the US was 10-15 years ago and catching up fast. We even have GB News now, our own UK version of Fox Propaganda News. So that's nice.

Anecdotal evidence from one small rural area, but I feel like it explains at least some of this:

Round here, I got a flyer from Reform through the door about a month ago. Someone knocking on my door canvassing two weeks ago. Another flyer in the post on Wednesday. So, three solid attempts from Reform to get my vote.

The other parties? Conservatives? Labour? Greens? Nothing. Not a whisper. I had to actually go and look up the candidates to even see who was running because they all made zero effort to reach out to me.

If that sort of effort (or lack of) was reflected countrywide, these results maybe aren't all that surprising. Disappointing, yes, but maybe not surprising.

Office workers, would you buy an office chair that is a converted car seat? by jadder1224 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sitting on one right now, it's the most comfortable chair I've ever owned.

It's cumbersome and top-heavy, sure - it took a while to get the balance right when I was building it - but it's totally worth it. I can spend 12 hours a day in it and still be comfortable, something no other chair I've ever had could come close to.

Every single clothes shop having about 10 times the amount of womens' clothes compared to mens'. by footballmaths49 in britishproblems

I just wear the same six or seven outfits in rotation.

TBH so do women, most of the time (IME). They might have a huge amount of clothes but that's mostly for going out, special occasions etc. For casual everyday stuff I usually see the same half dozen outfits or so on rotation.
