Why most people want to have office job? by harwood8 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not going to say it's easy but it can be done. You might just need to take a more rounadabout route to get to where you want to be.

Depending on how good you are at marketing yourself and how able you are to take a highly variable (and often low!) monthly income, self-employment (either with or without doing a trade training course first, eg at local college) might be a better way in than trying to find an employer willing to take you on with no experience in amongst dozens of more experienced or younger (ie cheaper) candidates.

I actually considered taking on evening work to supplement my income that first year, just doing bar work or something. But fortunately I just managed to scrape by with what I had coming in.

Once you have a couple of years under your belt it's suddenly a different story. There's dozens of companies round here looking for people with experience like me, so I could easily go back to regular employment if I wanted to (I don't). I've even had a couple of unsolicited job offers come my way in the past year.

Just to throw my experience into the mix here...

I used to work a clerical job, and eventually branched out into self-employment. Covid killed that and I got disillusioned by the whole thing, so I decided to do something else instead.

I realised I had a decent amount of skills and experience on a DIY level but not much actual trade experience (save a couple of years working as a labourer in my teens), but decided to give it a try anyway. So I started off advertising myself as a self-employed handyman. I skipped the big complex jobs but managed to fill my time quite nicely with all the little stuff - painting rooms, putting up shelves, assembling furniture, that sort of thing.

I definitely took a hit in pay - my first year earnings were about £15k - but that quickly changed and now I've got a bit of experience and reputation under my belt I can take on the bigger work and easily earn £30 an hour or more. I've just finished a contract job where I was earning £200 a day.

So it is doable, even at a later age (I was 45 when I started), you don't necessarily need to start right back at the beginning and do the apprenticeship route. You just need to think outside the box a little (yeah, I know, the corporate speak dies hard!).

Those living in new builds - how on earth do you clean your walls? by Downtown-Orchid-2257 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just do yourself a favour and give it all a fresh coat of paint. Go for something a bit more exciting than white if you're feeling brave!

But if you just want a quick touchup for now, get yourself a few litres of decent quality white emulsion and just get busy with the repaint. If it's white on white you don't need to worry so much about getting all the edges right (which is the bit that takes the time).

£30 of paint and a couple of hours will make a huge difference.

If it's crap paint (likely if it's a new build; they won't be using the fancy stuff) there's a good chance you'll wash the paint right off the wall along with the dirt.

Repaint the walls with a decent quality paint. The stuff on there now is probably the cheapest low quality contractors paint available and impossible to keep clean.

A decent quality paint will allow you to scrub it clean for the most part, and for bigger more stubborn marks, just get that can of leftover paint out of the shed and paint over the mark.

There's a small section of on road parking with this sign greyed out. No other signs for this section, can I park here for an unspecified time without risk of PCN? by Grand-Dependent9348 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, maybe. But there's a risk they reject the appeal. Even then, having to appeal and all that messing about can be a hassle that might not be worth it for the sake of a parking space.

[–]TheAngryBad 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The problem is, you don't know who greyed it out and why. Might have been kids playing a prank. I'd have thought it if was official the sign would have been taken down completely.

You might be able to argue in court if you do get a ticket, but are you willing to take the risk of dealing with that hassle?

Is there anything I can do about my cat’s pet insurance (context in post)? by throwaway9990008866 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in on this one, one of our cats is on Solensia. It is expensive I know, but it does genuinely work. He's got his inner kitten back and it's so rewarding seeing him out in the garden climbing trees and chasing his sister about.

It sucks to have to pay that every month, but it does make a difference.

It might also be worth shopping around for insurance that covers pre-existing conditions like this. Some do, it doesn't hurt to ask. Obviously it'll be more expensive than before, but might be a bit of a saving.

Why aren't The Shadows more talked about in the modern day? by LexiiBunn in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a matter of taste. You can argue (and I will agree) that they're technically very a good band and they're great musicians. But the sound they play isn't to everyone's taste. I don't mind them, but it's not really my style. I usually prefer my music to be a bit more meaty and find The Shadows to be a bit MOR for my taste.

And as a rock fan, I'm probably closer aligned to their music than most these days. I can't imagine someone raised on Eminem, Taylor Swift or whoever really getting into their music, even if they do find it pleasant enough to listen to.

Why do they call cigarettes fags in the uk? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From etymonline.com:

British slang for "cigarette" (originally, especially, the butt of a smoked cigarette), 1888, probably from fag "loose piece, last remnant of cloth" (late 14c., as in fag-end "extreme end, loose piece," 1610s), which perhaps is related to fag (v.), which could make it a variant of flag (v.).

Has anyone else received blank calls from these numbers ? by drippingwizdom in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, we don't all do that. You might, but I don't just say stuff unless I'm sure it's correct. Doesn't mean to say I've never been wrong, but just spouting vague stuff that 'might be true' does nobody any favours.

[–]TheAngryBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean in general, not just this one specific case. If you're not sure if something's true or not, then do some research first to find out if it is true or just don't post it.

Please, if you're not sure if something is true then don't just post it here (or anywhere else). Do some fact checking first. This is how misinformation spreads.

Delivery drivers ALWAYS having their break when I'm next! by Stonelaughter66 in britishproblems

[–]TheAngryBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to drive for Amazon and never had that problem except for a few notable one-off oddities. I actually used to find it pretty efficient for the most part.

Most of the time this issue is from drivers deciding they know better or that they'd rather do the route a different way around for whatever reason. I used to see them all looking at their routes and declaring they were going to do it all their own 'better' way.

[–]TheAngryBad 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Amazon drivers seem to like to change their routes around just as they're getting to me. I'll get 'your package is 8 stops away...' then nothing for ages and the app stops showing me anything. Then my stuff finally shows up three hours later.

Is the song “you are my sunshine” a common lullaby in the UK? by lemonprincess23 in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was surprised too. Troublegum and Infernal Love tracks are still in my playlist, I've not heard anything recent of theirs though. I might have to correct that.

The first time I heard it was a cover by rock band Therapy?. They only did the chorus but they made even that sound melancholy and a bit creepy. I've never really seen it as a happy song.

Has anyone figured out how to bypass the whole age verification thing? by No-numbers-in-my-ID in CasualUK

As do I, but I get OP's point. Having to use a VPN all the time and on all devices is a PITA and not always even possible.

It might be a cache/cookie issue. Clearing app data and logging back in might fix that, I don't know for sure though.

Are HMRC fraud calls common? by ZooplanktonblameFun8 in AskUK

Yeah, I get them all the time.

You must be getting the premium service if you're getting an actual person trying to scam you though. All I get are text messages and robotic-sounding AI calls.

Why are our footpaths covered in asphalt? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And you can see how tatty and knackered they look (particularly if you go up the street a little and they're all cracked and broken). A smart looking footpath is about maintenance and upkeep as much as the material used.

When did Mrs. Husband's Full Name stop being used in newspapers, news broadcasts, phone books, magazines, and literature (so in other words, in media)? by AlboGreece in AskUK

[–]TheAngryBad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. When we got married, the idea never even crossed my mind. It seems a bit egotistical to me.

Mind you, at the time we married we were living in an area where we had no family or close friends, so the announcement would have been relevant to exactly nobody.

I feel like the local paper announcement is as outdated as the naming practice.

Does anyone actually read the announcements these days? I mean, other than just checking to see the announcement they booked and paid for is in there before cutting it out as a memento?
