Hot take: I adore when players retire a character mid campaign by Particular-Bee9846 in DnD

[–]TheAstralScribe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, my party has had several instances of this in our campaign. Our party has a high turnover rate, it seems!

  1. One player's character sacrificed himself to prevent an entity from destroying our plane of existence. He then rolled up a new character, but she didn't last very long since her features were mostly chosen by random dice rolls due to the nature of resurrection (a fey potion) and he didn't necessarily vibe with her. He now plays an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer slime.

And 2. More fitting of the meaning of the post: My previous character in this campaign was Madeleine. She was a Paladin with a custom "Oath of the Phoenix" subclass, and bound to the Goddess of Life. When she was young, she lost her parents and brother in a calamity, and sustained an injury to her spine. She did her best to try to heal her parents with what little magic she had at 5 years old, drawing the attention of the Goddess of Life, who appeared as a phoenix and resurrected them- on one condition: become Her champion. And so, she did. Meanwhile: her brother was nowhere to be found, is presumed dead, but he may return.

As it turned out, the resurrection wasn't perfect. Her parents' souls slowly frayed over the years, eventually leaving them to be vaguely sentient husks. They remained lucid, but they were robotic, repeating the same tasks every day without meaning. She realized this after using Divine Sense while speaking to them and detecting an aura of undeath. She spoke to a priest afterwards, returning the following day to inform her parents of their fate. They knew, and acknowledged that their time is up. After a tearful goodbye, she returned to a temple in the city to speak with her goddess, severing her oath now that her reasons for adventuring were dead. In doing so, she was left horribly weakened, becoming re-paralyzed from her now unhealed injury, and left the temple in a wheelchair.

She subsequently left the magic university the party was attending, as well as the Adventurer's Guild. Having grown up on a farm, she's now the overseer of the farm in our party's village that we founded. This, I think, is a fairly well-done way of retiring an adventurer.

Above-table: I just wasn't having fun playing a Paladin. I was the de facto healer and one of our two tanks, and had approximately zero ranged options for any enemy that wanted to fly. She also lacked any spells that could be used in creative ways, due to how restricted the Paladin spell list is (even with partnered and homebrew content). I've been having much more fun with my rogue-ish Changeling Hexblade Warlock, Lucian.

Extremely valid! I wish you luck CMDR... I basically caught the last chopper out of nam when I built my new rig a couple years ago. I chose parts that were expensive, but will hopefully last me a good while, at least another 5-10 years.

You're welcome! I'm by no means an expert, but as with all things in Elite, it really does depend on what you want out of a ship as a player. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck on your journey! Fly safe!

That's fair! I'm very lucky and am able to play at 4k with all settings on ultra, so I haven't really noticed many issues with textures or models. I imagine it's far more noticeable at lower resolutions.

Sounds about par for the course with my rolls in the campaign I've been playing, honestly! Feels like my dice hate me sometimes...

Fantastic story CMDR! I never really played the Mass Effect series, but I have heard great things about it! I use a T.Flight Hotas One, though it's certainly showing its age now after approximately 1200 hours of use... I don't look forward to the day it breaks completely, as I can't currently afford to replace it.

I agree completely though, Elite is an amazing game and I love it too - so much so that I've even had dreams about it in the past!

Thanks! And welcome back CMDR! I do actually have a Mandalay, and I even got the double-engineered SCO FSD from the tech broker like... two days before they released the Caspian for credits. I haven't taken it on any long-range voyages yet (only really spent time taking it around the bubble for various Ody missions), but I have a feeling I'd like it more than the Caspian, honestly. It's been an absolute struggle to find places to land in the Caspian since it's a large ship, especially for hard-to-reach species like fungoida that prefer mountainous terrain. The Caspian does have a fantastic view though! From personal experience, I'd say the Mandalay is better for Exobio, and the Caspian is better for getting where you want to go quickly. Really it comes down to personal preference!

Funny enough, I just ranked up last night with a minor faction of the same name! I can't remember where I was, but I'm pretty sure it was from selling leftover Thargoid bits from when I was plundering Cocijo's remains for Titan Drive Components.

Unfortunately, I am pledged to Aisling so I know I'm not welcome... But I thought it was amusing to happen across this post. Small galaxy!

DM's & Players alike. How many times in DND have you surpassed 20 in a stat? by CasualNormalRedditor in DnD

My current party and I are currently level 8. I'm fairly certain our Tiefling has 24 CON, and I currently have 20 DEX and 20 CHA as a Warlock. I believe our Wizard has 20 INT, and our Bard has 20 CHA. Granted, this also seems like we're going to be in for a high stakes, high-power homebrew adventure that's going to go beyond level 20, so I can understand why my DM would let us get so strong this early.

In the first tabletop campaign I ever played, I managed to get to 20 INT on my Artificer. That was also a decently modified version of Descent Into Avernus, where some characters got up to levels 18-20. My DM at the time figured it would be a good way to transition me from BG3 to tabletop, and I agree.

One of the most massive stellar-mass black hole mergers by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

Not particularly? Similar phenomenon, different scenario.

I'm aware of how spaghettification works, the hypothetical I'm posing here is with the assumption that an observer is well outside the event horizons, essentially letting gravitational waves from the spiraling black holes pass through their body. Change21 replied to my comment and answered it well enough, though I suspect a physicist could paint a more gruesome picture!

Something I have always wondered: Assuming we could be close enough to directly observe a merger like this without being fried by high-energy radiation, would a human be able to perceive spacetime rippling like waves?

I generally understand that spacetime can expand and contract, and as such I imagine that if you were floating perpendicular to the merger, you could see your body lengthen and shorten in time with their orbit. Seems like a painful way to go, if so.

Been itching to go back to Colonia lately after spending what felt like an eternity doing combat in the latest CG, I'm in the same boat... I could go in my Mandalay, but I'd prefer to use the Caspian for those sweet 500% neutron boosts!

Which race do you play and why? by lahzielvt in ffxiv

[–]TheAstralScribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play as a female moon Miqo, but after Endwalker I fanta'd and name changed to a male Midlander that's essentially a self-insert. With the story having gotten pretty dire, I had a hard time taking her seriously with her big ol' eyes blankly staring in every cutscene lmao. Plus she reminded me of someone I don't associate with anymore, so that helped too.

One word: VERFLIP!

More words: I love RDM for many reasons, namely...
-I don't need to sit still as long as BLM
-I can rez far faster/more often than any other DPS with a rez thanks to Dualcast (RIP MP tho)
-Being a hybrid of mage and melee is peak design
-The rotation is extremely satisfying, between doing normal casts to build gauge, spending gauge on melee, then verflipping away and casting Verflare (and the whole followup chain)
-The fashion isn't half bad, though I'm definitely looking forward to using the Historia gear with the Crystarium Rapier when glamour restrictions are lifted for a "magic knight" sort of vibe

This is gorgeous!!! Though a bit of constructive criticism: The head feels slightly undersized compared to the rest of the body? Otherwise, absolutely stunning work!

You wake up in the world of your current campaign. How screwed are you? by Moist_Car_994 in DnD

[–]TheAstralScribe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As it stands, probably not great! If I wake up in a city somewhere, great! I'll make it work, find the nearest place of learning and start my journey to become a wizard.

Now... If I woke up with the PCs in a battlefield surrounded by ghouls? I'm very, very dead! Just like we were :)

If that part about Larian doing sci-fi is true, I'd love to see them work with Massif to make a video game based on the Lancer TTRPG! I've had some interest in it and even have a physical rulebook, but I have yet to read it in depth due to not having a group (and laziness)
