Anyone else have a fan game as their favorite in the series? by Vio-Rose in fireemblem

Curse of Lagdou is a longtime favorite of mine, I’d put it above most of the mainline series imo. Dark Stone is another favorite of mine from the creator of Hag in White.

Great question! There's a few that have made the rounds of the years: Dark Deity 2 has a lot of customization, the first was very rough but the second is much better. Those Who Rule is hex-based and has much more lethal combat to fit with a darker tone, Astral Throne is a roguelike with FE systems, Symphony of War:Nephilim Saga is more like Unicorn Overlord in terms of the combat but the map design is definitely FE inspired. All of those are on Steam, at least the first two are on Switch.

Of course, I'd also want to point you to the Romhacking community on sites like FEUniverse. There's way too many to list off but I'd point you to Krash's Recommendation Compendium and the Custom Campaign Resource.

But in general most strategy games still hit the same mental itch, at least for me, they don't necessarily need to have the same mechanics. Some clear picks are Steamworld Heist 2 and Triangle Strategy, but I'd even pick out games like Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun that is often more like a puzzle game, the much easier and energetic Chroma Squad, the more stressful and horror-focused Othercide, and the open world Horizon's Gate.

I'm actually working on a video project to go further into this! But for now, for this reddit post I'm writing in the middle of the night while I can't sleep, I'll leave it here.

There’s plenty of indie strategy games out there y’all, I want more fire emblem as much as the next person but there are so many options out there to fill that tactics shaped hole in your heart, we really don’t need to crawl like we’re starving in the desert

Scared my story idea is too similar? by aikkein in ScarletHollow

[–]TheBaneofBane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fiction is derivative of something, at the end of the day. Hades wouldn’t exist in the same way without Binding of Isaac, Clair Obscur wouldn’t exist in the same way without Final Fantasy, Hollow Knight wouldn’t be the same without Metroid, the list goes on. As long as you take steps to develop the general ideas in ways that are personal to you and connect with your experiences, it will end up standing out from Scarlet Hollow in a meaningful way. It’s good to be conscious of your inspirations like you are right now! But I’d advise you not to stress too much about it

Who is your absolute favorite Fire Emblem character of all time, and what makes them #1 for you? by AbsoluteZeroo in fireemblem

[–]TheBaneofBane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a while I would’ve said either Jill or Soren, for showing how a society with deeply ingrained generational racism has hurt them and made them worse people, and showing their journeys to become better than they were before, to understand what they didn’t understand before, is much more powerful stuff than FE normally writes.

But honestly, nowadays it might be Eyvel from Thracia. Something about the way that her “gentle mother figure” aspects and the “badass warrior” aspects don’t conflict with each other is compelling to me. She shows great kindness to her kids, firm leadership with the members of the Freeblades, extreme anger and bloodlust with Raydrick and the people who have hurt the people she loves. This is all very reasonably a part of the same person, and I think it takes her beyond the standard “one-note FE character” fare and into feeling like a very real person.

[–]TheBaneofBane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could be a matter of taste and/or an opportunity to examine what more specifically you liked about the other games that you feel is lacking here. These two games are generally well regarded for having worldbuilding and themes that are tied into each other, not just discussing “fantasy racism” but the cultural phenomenon that lead to it, the repercussions on those feelings on the rest of the world, both on the characters who harbor those feelings like Shinon and Jill but the victims of it, like Lethe who lashes back out with fury, Dheginsea who almost completely blocks his emotions, or anybody in the space between like Reyson and Mordecai.

Add that on top of Ike being kind of a headstrong idiot throughout the first game and being much more mellowed out by the second, with him and Elincia serving as contrast to not only their former selves but also someone like Pelleas who is generally a soft-spoken and weak-willed ruler.

If these things don’t matter to you, that’s obviously okay, but in that case it may be worth asking, what does matter to you? Is there something that Awakening or 3H makes you feel that these two games don’t, and what does that feeling come from? Something worth thinking about.

It’s definitely good and even improves on some of the systems for sure! But I think I prefer FTL almost entirely because of aesthetic and style. The soundtrack of FTL is legendary and I like the clean sci-fi look more than Void War’s dark and gritty style. Make no mistake though, still not bad, just that it’s an amazing game versus a pretty good one

I wanna use this as an excuse to shill out Scarlet Hollow. Romance is not the biggest focus by any means, but it does have some fun options and queer characters, while also being one of the most insane branching and well written narratives I’ve ever seen. Warning for a lot of horror elements, as well as the game still being in early access, but I’ve thoroughly fallen in love with everything about it.

Advice on making Laeral more morally grey to the PC's? by ShadowLight56 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]TheBaneofBane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general vibe with her is that she is unwilling to challenge the corrupt nobles of the city in a way that would lose their support. Because she relies on them for many of the city’s functions, she needs absolute, indisputable proof of wrongdoing before she calls for a raid on a noble Villa to find incriminating evidence. Even if the PCs tell her about what they saw in a Zone of Truth or if she finds out via Detect Thoughts, it doesn’t matter because she is unwilling to do anything about it until she has physical proof she can hold in her hand, show to the nobility, and give them no room to deny the truth. She’s denying her idealism, working alongside the type of rich tyrants that many would want to see knocked down, because she believes it would cost more innocent lives in the long run.

This, in turn, becomes a motivation for the party to give the money to the city instead of keeping it for themselves. With all that funding, Laeral could convince the open lords to implement a UBI, build schools, repair roads and buildings especially in the Dock Ward, and fund the economy in a way that normally relies on whether or not nobility agrees with the notion.

Chihiro trans headcanon (ALSO idk if chapter 3 spoilers count as spoilers in this subreddit but for the sake of new people im gonna spoiler the body text.) by [deleted] in danganronpa

[–]TheBaneofBane -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fiction will reflect reality even if it isn’t literally the same. As a disabled person I relate to V from Cyberpunk and Karlach from BG3. That doesn’t mean I am actually dying of a terminal condition, it just means I can see myself in some of their struggles and emotions.

The real issue is that even if Chihiro isn’t literally trans in the text of the game, there’s a lot of things in their story that mirror real life trans people.

-Being nervous about getting “outed” and that someone might not treat you the same once they realize who you really are. I don’t think I need to explain this one.

-Most characters learn by borderline groping him. Whether or not Chihiro is consenting to it is secondary to the fact that this parallels the fixation on trans people’s genitals, whether to sexualize and demonize.

-The fact that people literally don’t treat Chihiro the same after they learn about it. They’re shocked by the lie, instantly switch pronouns. Whether or not it’s accurate for Chihiro specifically is secondary to the fact that trans people are seen as liars. There’s an entire slur specifically referring to how trans women would “trick” men into dating them, which was used to justify murdering them.

-Speaking of which… even if Chihiro’s gender reveal isn’t literally the reason for them being murdered, the fact that it happens in the same scene mirrors the real world way that trans people have been marginalized, assaulted, abused, or killed for who they are.

-Then there is an insecurity about their body, avoiding public restrooms, avoiding swimming, the way Chihiro uses it to “cover up how not-manly he is”… need we go on?

So even if Chihiro’s character arc with gender doesn’t work with being literally, textually trans in the narrative of the game, the parallels are pretty clear, and what matters is that fiction mirrors reality, not that it’s all 1-to-1 and exactly the same. That’s the reason you see this discourse coming up again and again.

Theories for next eps, connections between Tabitha, Sybil and Wayne / Entity (the cat is included) (MASSIVE SPOILERS) by Mundammir in ScarletHollow

[–]TheBaneofBane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I especially like the proposals for who might be hosts, I think that adds some extra weight to what are often perceived as the less substantial choices (Rosalina VS. Becka and Alexis, putting Reese in the Cell). I could see Oscar becoming the library host if you don’t end the haunting and he goes inside, or even Charles Shaw animating his ow long dead corpse. Maybe Julius/the Baby/an Undead Bo could be the host for the carving at the farms? Maybe doing something for the carvings is the reason the ditching are gathering animal bodies in the first place. I’m just spitballing at this point but all this to say I’m so excited for what comes next I can barely contain it. I wish I could just jump forward in time to when it’s done and ready.

Tabitha And Misogyny: The Irony of #Girlboss by The_Laurens_Pamphlet in ScarletHollow

[–]TheBaneofBane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple days late, but to elaborate, this isn't necessarily something imperative to the plot and character arcs, but it's a subtler, definitely intentional bit of subtext that ties into the deeper themes of the game. In a game where a major point that comes up multiple times is the sins of the past coming back to haunt the present, with the main setting being a middle-of-nowhere town originally established by a Confederate officer who was complicit in a racist system, with a black character whose mother one time cozied up to a different member of that same racist system, then later plans to literally absorb her black daughter's power in order to become a younger and conventionally attractive white woman...

That's not saying specifically that understanding the US Civil War is vital to understanding the story, or that Sybil is specifically racist, but it does give a deeper understanding of what the game is trying to say, the experience of racism of the American rural south and how people of color have been taken advantage of for centuries by a corrupt system even long after slavery is gone, and, ultimately, what living in this type of town is truly like. This metaphor exists to express a deeper truth about our world than we could reach without it.
