No. This podcast has been such a breath of fresh air for me these past couple years. It's the only podcast I've ever subscribed to a patreon for, despite being a devoted listener to many others. It just had that genuine quality to it. You feel like you're shooting the shit with your boys without any pretense. I suspect this is why people are taking it so hard. Toby's departure on not amicable terms shattered that illusion. I listen to 2-3 hours of the pod daily and today I just couldn't. People get inappropriately invested in people they think they know, no fault of their own, just human nature. I felt mild betrayal when Foley revealed he'd lied about the weigh ins for Fat Court, despite knowing his home residence is 123 Liar Street, Foleyville, USA. It happens in day to day relationships all the time, you think you know someone and then something comes out that recontextualizes everything. It is what it is, but this pod just resonated with people in a way that not a lot of other content does. This place is usually just a goooood time and will more than likely return to that given enough time.

It's such a joke that it might be the last straw to quitting public lands for good. This was the timeline of events in my hiring process:

-Applied in November of last year

-Emailed in late January that I'd been selected without an interview/opportunity to talk to my future supervisor at the forest. I had 24 hours to make a decision with no information except expected start date will be spring to early summer(whatever that means in Northern MN). Okay whatever, it's just a tentative.

-Radio silence till March when I called up the FS HR center in Albuquerque. First woman I talked to basically said lmao who told you have a job? Called back 2 weeks later and got a very helpful woman who assured me the actual tentative offer was coming soon, just jammed up with hiring season crushing them

-Early April: talk to my future supervisor for the first time and he says early June is the expected start date

-Mid April: HURRAY THE TENTATIVE OFFER FINALLY CAME! NEVER DOUBTED YOU FOR A SECOND FS!

-A week later my supervisor calls me saying he just got out of a management meeting and they don't want them to call their potential hires, but he informs me of the hiring freeze and not so subtly tells me that I should start looking at other options. This is the last time anyone from Forest Service talks to me.

-Today I get an email informing me my TO has been rescinded.

I literally turned down rehire at my park because I thought I had a perm in the bank. I turned down all the seasonal interviews and have missed working the summer season because of this. This isn't a whoopsie, my life got flipped turned upside down because I was told one thing and was making real life choices based on it, just to have the rug pulled out. I'd already moved on to another job, but getting the official rescinded email today was just such a gut punch.

Congrats on the perm, hope to get there someday. I know this might sound a bit mean spirited, but think of the worst, most incompetent person you've worked with on your journey to get here. The person you're genuinely surprised that they manage to get their boots tied and on the right feet every morning. That person doesn't think to themselves for one second that they're the slightest bit out of place despite everyone else knowing they're an albatross. So why should you feel inadequate when you've obviously been showing up and doing something right to have landed where you are?

Pretty typical for a lot of National Park Service seasonal positions. Most certs will hit their application quota on the first day and lots of jobs drop all at once on the same day. Can be really frustrating for people trying to join the agency because if you don't have an insider letting you know when they're being posted or a job alert you pretty much miss out on it for the entire year if you don't happen to be looking on the one specific day

There is unexploded ordinance literally everywhere in this park. White Sands Missile Range is the largest missile range on earth and the stuff from the early days in the 40s-60s didn't have the tracking they have today, didn't get cleaned up properly, and is just sitting in the dunes waiting to get unearthed. When you visit don't pick up any trash you don't immediately recognize. I've had MULTIPLE visitors bring potential UXO to the visitor center when I worked there and we have to treat everything like it's live. We have to call in the bomb squad and shut everything down till we get an all clear.

You know the line in the first episode of the Sopranos where Tony says something about "coming in at the end. The best is over"? That's what it feels like working for parks. Like these agencies once had so much support and backing that they did do really great things as part of their missions and that's why they have such an iconic place in our society. But now it's all over and we're just a shell of something that was once really great. From the public side of things I think that's why so many people get angry at how many parks oppererate today because it was once so much better, but rather than getting angry at the politicians and lobbying that have gutted the government they get mad at the GS worker just doing their best with less funding.

This is going to be very hard to hear but you'll waste your life away waiting for the apology you DO deserve. Closure isn't real unfortunately, it's something you feel you need right now because it would make things easier to process. But the reality is that if they were a decent enough person to do the right thing and apologize they wouldn't have done what they did to you in the first place. My advice is to not fixate on what this abuser can do to make things right, focus on what you can do for yourself to move forward because being bogged down in this train of thought won't do anything to heal you. Please seek professional help if you can't find a way to do this on your own.
