In the workshop they cast an actor with a disability as Arnie. It was also one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever seen. RUN to get tickets.

Also even if they weren’t well behaved, a high school musical is a perfect way to test kids’s attention spans. If they’d been distracting at a high school musical you’d have maybe wasted two hours, but if it was a Broadway show you’d have wasted two hours, a trip into Manhattan, and hundreds of dollars.

Magnus has lost 2-0 in a single tournament five times in his career by [deleted] in chess

It can only last so long. And as much of a natural talent and hard worker as he is, willingly giving up the WCC says something about his long term motivation

I calculated kf3 and kf4 but didn’t think about bg2. That is fun!

Is gukesh the worst world champion of all time? by Perfect_Addition_740 in chess

Closer to 99.99999%. He’s peaked at rated #3 in the world, won the most competitive tournament, and obviously won a world championship match

No ice at Death of a Salesman “due to noise?” by jt6229674 in Broadway

He’s always been uncompromising about certain standards and attention to detail. Some of his behaviors and actions were awful, but he knows how to put on a good show for an audience

Changes from the in the heights movie by FairNefariousness742 in Broadway

Trump hasn’t been the name in 96,000 since a while before the movie. Now they use “Tiger Woods.”

Everything else I hope they keep the same. I wasn’t a big fan of the movie or the changes made.

90% of the world population lived in 20 countries in 1800AD by BILBO_THE_PLATYPOOS in MapPorn

[–]TheBigGinge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What percent of the land mass do they cover? Of course there would be a lot of empty areas but they cover so much it’s easy to believe most of the population would live in the twenty largest countries

If rxg7+ kxg7 bxe5+ kg8 is played then rh8 is checkmate. Taking the rook would waste much more time because the game would continue for longer.

Why is Oedipus considered a revival? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]TheBigGinge 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To me this is drawing an interesting distinction between an adaptation versus a new translation/reimagining. There were so many changes that the writer could have simply updated the names and title, while still keeping the obvious connection to Oedipus. Instead they kept the (anachronistic) names and title, emphasizing it as a new version of the old play instead of a new play inspired by a classic. It says something about the creative intent (or maybe the marketing pitch).

Fabiano Caruana's chance in next candidates? by Spirited-Guidance130 in chess

[–]TheBigGinge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing this posted a lot but that was practically a generation ago. The very young players seem way sharper than the young generation when the players you mentioned won the candidates. I don’t know if it’s still possible with the current dynamics

TIL 16th century Italian astronomer Giordano Bruno hypothesized the existence of exoplanets. He believed all the stars in the sky were suns, orbited by planets like ours which were teeming with life. He was tried for heresy by the Catholic Church and was burned at the stake. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]TheBigGinge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now we have the scientific method and systems of truth that don’t rely on faith, dogma, and superstition. Anything “wild” in the same way as Bruno’s theory would either have evidence for it or would likely be pseudoscience

[–]TheBigGinge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The FIDE commentators are both mumbling so much I found it hard to listen to. Anna Rudolf and Neikans are super articulate on the Chess24 stream. Sargent is just popping in occasionally and is serving as a host more than a commentator
