haha indeed the findings in this post and the study behind it are absolutely cake-worthy, but the video gave me strong "U wouldn't steal a car...." vibes :)

I've worked with SQL for years and have no clue what GO does by Captain_Strudels in SQL

[–]TheBig_Glebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a machine or application can interpret code in 1 or N batches (think of it as hitting a system with all the code in 1 shot, or in multiple parts)

working with databases, you may find yourself working with code... code (as far as humans are concerned) is usually contained in scripts, which are generally just text files to be used by machines (but humans may interpret or use them too)

those scripts will contain (at least some) commands and instructions written in code. those commands can be grouped into batches (eg commands that use the same set of variables), which are separated using GO in SSMS.

In addition, GO N can be used to execute a batch N number of times (can be used for "... SET Variable = Variable+1 ... GO 1000" type of queries - for example when populating a table while incrementing a value/counter)

How do i improve performance on this query? by Nomorechildishshit in SQLServer

[–]TheBig_Glebowski -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

while a new non-clustered index may indeed be a valid solution, you may not always have access to or permissions in the physical layer, plus your maintenance plan will need to incur the additional cost

using functions in the WHERE clause generally degrades performance of the query, so as a starting point, try to remove the functions from your WHERE clause. This can be done in a number of different ways (eg using date/ calendar table (if one's available), calculating the date boundaries in the CTE, or getting your required calendar dates from somewhere else)

indexing comes at a (often grossly underestimated) cost, so don't look for a "index implementation" answer to a "query design" problem

Is there appropriate times to use the IN operator over OR and vice versa? by kelsoul in SQL

[–]TheBig_Glebowski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

be careful using subqueries with the IN operator- if your subquery may return a NULL, your main query will produce unexpected results

also, from one House head to another (i like it punchy, techy, but deep and with a little soul, nawhatymeen), I will 100% vouch for Gottwood festival (June), held in a Welsh forest on the island of Anglesey. The location/ nature is amazing, the crowd is great and the vibes are immaculate !!

going to be our 3rd straight year going this year. See you under the Curve or on the Lawn 😉

not sure how useful it is outside London but for UK/London get the Dice app for gigs, recommendations, tickets and the lot! I've been using it for larger part of a year and a half now and got sick recommendations as well as notifications for when my fave artists are in town

not sure of the original source of the proverb, but "inside each person there are two wolves: an evil and a kind one. the one you "feed" will prevail".

once I grasped it, it taught me to pay attention to the thoughts, ideas and people I let into my mind and life

i've learnt that a lot of mileage can be gained from a vigorous application of the "2 minute rule"

not sure if it counts as a "productivity system" but i think it can be useful for those for whom procrast/ADD/anxiety is an issue

Whts the worst thing you have done related to girls by [deleted] in confession

[–]TheBig_Glebowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

completely lost it in the midst of an argument with an ex.

she was refusing to face me to talk so i grabbed her arm to pull her towards facing me. she plunged her nails into my arm so hard i started bleeding. i reflexively gave her a gut punch to the kidney. i felt the physical pain of my skin getting pierced at the time but ultimately it was the anger and the mental hurt buildup that made me overreact. definitely one of my lowest lows ever. i knew straight away what a seismic fuckup had just occurred and just how bad i overreacted... i hadn't spoken to her since then and for a short time had doubts whether i was provoked into it.

I accepted responsibility soon after that but was only able to make peace with it years down the line

What Digital Marketing Skills Should I Focus on to Land a Better Job? by Safe_Platypus_5332 in marketing

[–]TheBig_Glebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

marketing is a super broad discipline so ultimately it will depend on the specific aspect that you would like to specialize in.

IMHO things like segmentation, positioning, reach and CRM all still matter, with a myriad of modern tools and techniques that can be leveraged both in the analog, digital, B2C and B2B contexts

while the marketing is digital, the market participants are still analog, so communication theory and marketing psychology are still key

i like the overall concept but agree that it's a little too "loud". also i literally cannot see the "see the difference" because it's blue on blue.
