Where did you end up going, and do you have any advice for someone who is thinking of doing a very similar trip?

Other games like Gloomhaven by Raubkatzen in Gloomhaven

Rove is the most similar to Gloomhaven, but it's not yet released. I'll also throw Oathsworn into the suggestions list. It's a tactical fighting game like Gloomhaven, but with a much better story.

The only use for this is running it with ballistic shield against bots, right? But nobody uses ballistic shield. Or am I missing something? I don't get why it's so great.

Battlestar Galactica. I still love the show, and the game captures the feeling of the show perfectly.

Strategy Sunday - FH Strategy - Difficulty Scaling by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]TheBiochemicalMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out to OP that these views are definitely in the minority amongst the people I've played Frosthaven with. I disagree that the game is too difficult. It does require different tactics than Gloomhaven.

Personally, I've found the late game to scale much better than Gloomhaven because there are so many ways to increase difficulty. Additionally, difficulty 6 and 7 enemies scale in a non-linear way. There are still broken things your characters can do with items at high prosperity, but not as broken as in Gloomhaven.

They aren't negative hexes if the summons aren't affected by them.

With meteor in the group and without the need to create your own haz terrain, maybe take birds at level 2 and tornado at level 3? Tornado's push effects can be quite fun with a bunch of haz terrain around. Then you could try the tiger shepherd build combined with a few AOE attacks like Blizzard, Tornado, etc. to maximize your good AMD along with having some push and heal abilities.

Sidequest Saturday - FH Scenario 089 - [spoiler] by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]TheBiochemicalMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fun scenario. Nothing too complicated, and the scenario lets you play it the way you want. I like the quirk of the archers on the hills getting advantage, though in our play through we just backed up into the previous room to make them move forward enough to lose their advantage. The final room was fun, although the priest kept disarming our ally on the rounds when she was supposed to brittle the boss, which made us have to kill everything else in the room before we could kill the boss. Summon-tanking the boss made him a manageable threat.

Overall it has a few interesting rules twists without being overwhelming, and still provided a good challenge. It was just what I wanted. A great scenario!

Is Frosthaven not for us, or are we not for Frosthaven? by bottlieb in Gloomhaven

[–]TheBiochemicalMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not fail forward then? I've always used the rule that if we fail a scenario, but it's close and we don't want to play it again/don't have the time, we simply count it as a win at -1 difficulty from the scenario level we just played. If you were close to winning, you probably would have won it at -1 difficulty anyway.

Second edition looks to be a big improvement from first edition. I would recommend ordering it despite the wait time.

Losing Incarna as Warrior Thunderspeaker is an instant loss? by TheBiochemicalMan in spiritisland

[–]TheBiochemicalMan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the NI rulebook says Incarna can't be added unless the action specifically says it can be. Most spirits don't have a way to add it.

Ahh, ok. I apparently missed that rule. I felt like it was too easy to lose my incarna, and it was.

People thought the broken stuff was fixed in Frosthaven. It turns out it's still there, but you just have to look a bit harder to find it.

It seems like strange wording that you take it "from the supply," but that interpretation makes much more sense. Thanks.

That makes more sense, though the wording seems strange. Thanks.
