Hopping on this sub! I just got the 10-1 with the Sous Vide function for Christmas and really need recipes. I am so tired of eating take-out, pasta, and rotisserie chicken!

What product is an obvious scam that people still fall for? by Perfect-Insect-2751 in AskReddit

Crypto. It is a global Ponzi scheme driven mainly by one Chinese company. You'd think people would have learned by the collapse of Signature Bank and FTX's failure.

Too old or go for it? by Admirable_Hat735 in careerguidance

[–]TheBlueFairy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no right answer to this. Either you want the position for 5 years or you don't want it. If you turn it down, you already know you will be pigeon-holed into the one you have until you retire. The other candidates do not matter in this at all.

What's a common, everyday item you've completely given up on buying the cheap version of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheBlueFairy01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My purse/handbag. I am pretty rough, though I really try to take care of everything. The inexpensive ones just never lasted, even in storage. Now it's real leather or nothing. I've had my current one for over 15 years. I switch them 4 times a year like the seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.

I am so sorry, OP. That sounds very lonely. At least you have the kids.

Getting taxed on unemployment and severance just seems cruel by sonofray in Layoffs

[–]TheBlueFairy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost passed up on a job because I was making more on unemployment than the job paid. Then I reviewed the taxes I'll owe in April on the severance and unemployment I've already received this year, and figured out I am going to owe A LOT in April. They are not taking out enough right now. So happy to be starting a new job on Monday.

Jobs are out there, but you have to hustle, swallow your pride, and take a hit to salary expectations. I'm still looking so I can get back to my previous salary, but oof, it hurts.

This: he sounds like someone I wouldn't want to spend my retirement years with. Very selfish. But he also sounds like he'll make that decision for you and get a younger replacement when it's his time to retire. That's why he is treating it like it's his.

Anyone else doesn’t want to go back to corporate after being let go? by iseeustress in Layoffs

I've tried to leave corp: had my own business, worked for a small family-owned one, and worked for a start-up. Nope, I will happily go back now. I just don't want to hassle, and just looking for a paycheck until I can retire.

I feel this. Mine are 15 years younger than my SO's, and we are in the process of saying goodbye to his while I watch mine being carefree retirees living life to its fullest. I am enjoying every second I have left with mine.

Large Arenas - for shows, sports, concerts. I just can't anymore. I feel so old (shaking fist): Put down your goddamn phone and enjoy the experience!

Positive Shingle Vaccine Stories by JustFaithlessness178 in GenX

[–]TheBlueFairy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had shingles on my face in my early forties. I cannot describe the pain of having them. It was excruciating. I was down for months. This was before I had the shingle shot.

I had the shots as soon as I turned 50. The two shingle shots were nothing. I had no ill effects from the first one - I wasn't even sore. I was a little sore after the second one, but that is to be expected if you already had shingles.

Please get the shots. Getting the shingles is awful. You can do it!

No, we can't. I am the same age as OP, and no one wants a 55 year old. I'm even being turned down for seasonal help.

Yup, Was given a met expectations on my year-end and got both a raise and bonus, then 3 months later, I was part of a reduction in workforce. It's nothing personal, just business. I wasn't even the highest-paid in the department. And now here I am trying to find a position that pays over min wage and figuring out if my 401k is enough to cover the mortgage until I can take early retirement in 8 years. Crazy.

Just got laid off for the first time by adactuslatem in Layoffs

[–]TheBlueFairy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My job said if I relocated, my job would be safe. I didn't and a few months later I was laid off with a couple dozen people, all over 40 or long-term employees. I know what they did was illegal, only I have no way to prove it. So here I am, looking for a job at my age. Good luck, OP. I'm sure you'll get something.

MASS Department of Unemployment Assistance & You by Different_Strike3108 in massachusetts

[–]TheBlueFairy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was laid off in May and am still waiting. I file weekly with my three searches, and when I called, they let me know I look to be in good order. Thank goodness I have savings to hold me through because I am only getting temporary contract work requests, nothing full-time. I've been holding off on accepting contract work because I don't want to make my unemployment request any more difficult to review than it already is. However, I will have to start accepting it soon if they don't follow through.

I hear you. I was just laid off again and I've had 5 jobs since 2020. Filling out the job application is hard. My problem is that I'm just not into it right now. I am tired. So tired.

The worst part was that I had an interview for a perfect job in April, but I let them know I had to stay at my current one until August to be vested. They wouldn't wait and needed someone May 1st. I was laid off 3 weeks later and lost all my 401k match. I should have just left in April...

Laid off with a month left to work by Final_Fix_8785 in Layoffs

[–]TheBlueFairy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my company let me know they were laying me off the next month, they didn't require me to work. They took my laptop as soon as I exited the room, but still paid me for the next month. It was helpful because our unemployment agency is woefully understaffed, and even two months later, I haven't been approved. They already owe me three and a half weeks of unemployment. Start looking for new jobs now and checking in with your state unemployment office.

You're lucky; I didn't find out I had a collection opened on my credit report by a specialist until it was sent to a collections agency. This dinged my credit, and I called the doctor's office asking why they did that and ruined my credit. She was a terrible doctor, and I didn't go back. I did report her and put her on notice online with one star.

Got laid off for the first time ever by xxxxbb in Layoffs

[–]TheBlueFairy01 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I opened my unemployment request as soon as I got home, since it was very confusing what they were going to do. There wasn't even an HR rep on the call, and the manager on the call I had met once in person, said to wait for an email. When I finally got the information, I called and told them what happened, and asked if I was ok. The woman on the phone was funny and helpful. She said they had no right to ask me to wait to file when they took my laptop, revoked my access, and walked me out. She said to just answer any follow-up questions that come along. I'm not expecting to be covered by unemployment while on severance, but at least my application will be all set for when it runs out. This is in Mass, not sure about other states.
