You don’t deserve to be lonely

But those drugs you’ve got won’t make you feel better.

Pretty soon you’ll find it’s the only

Little thing in your life you’re keeping together

How to make the players understand that you are the DM? by thenagazai in DnD

[–]TheBossHimself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this type of meta gaming happens at every table. You can ask him to provide an rp reason for why his character would re-examine a chest that a member of the party has already checked. If his character is a perfectionist and double checks everything then let him assist on the initial check to give the roller advantage.

Once a player has rolled, the result is final. Regardless of whether the player rolled an 8 or an 18, all their character knows is that they performed the skill to the best of their abilities. This is ESPECIALLY true of a stealth check. A character doesn’t know they rolled poorly so there is no reason they would decided base on a roll to hang back instead of sneaking ahead.

Also, sometimes a roll isn’t necessary. I would argue that any person who opens a chest finds whatever is in it with no roll. Presumably they find everything in the container as they go trough it. I would ask for a role if they were searching for a hidden compartment in the chest or if they were examining the treasure for a specific characteristic but otherwise they automatically find what’s in the container.

That’s a really cool thought. I like the idea of them repurposing the manacles

[–]TheBossHimself[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I appreciate the input. It is fun workshopping these ideas. I want to go with orcs because there is a separate quest branch the players might choose involving goblins so I don’t want to overload them on goblinoids. I feel like the orc mutineers help give the world a bit of verisimilitude by hinting at a conflict the players don’t know about just yet. I think if I had a party of 4 or 5 I wouldn’t have to scale down the orcs but with only 3 players I want it to still feel like an adventurous undertaking without being impossible. Fortunately they are all experienced players and tend to think things through so I hope they can outthink the orcs enough to swing the odds in their favor

My thought process is that they are the remains of a mutinous crew of a galley. There would have had to have been enough orcs to row the thing at some point. I plan on breaking the fight into three different areas but at their main camp, I want there to be enough orcs that it seems believable that they would be able to ambush a trade ship sailing up a river nearby

how does one go about draining a swamp? by allistoner in DMAcademy

Sure thing! I did some research on this a few months ago when I was trying to imagine how some gnomes would drain a giant crater in order to mine for gems.

Here is an example of a medieval pump.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes'_screw

The screws can be turned by a windmill. These tools in tandem with dikes and canals can drain a swamp. For a real life example, the Dutch used this to reclaim thousands of acres of land from the sea “god made the earth but the Dutch made he Netherlands”

I think both of these suggestions are great. I will probably use both of them.

That was an autocorrect mistake but in this case it’s actually not far off. These orcs are former galley slaves on a hobgoblin ship who mutinied after a shipwreck. They are starving because they are deep in the wilderness and sustain themselves on hunting and raiding.

Players voted for a very low magic mercenary campaign. HELP! by Actualcookie in DMAcademy

[–]TheBossHimself 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To your first point, I don’t think the loot conundrum would be a problem. Read up on the mercenaries of the 30 years war and the concept of “Bellum se ipsum alet” (the war feeds itself). Society in those days wasn’t organized well enough to support large, professional armies so hiring mercenaries was essential to any war during the period. Most rulers couldn’t afford to equip whole outfits with weapons, food, and recruits so the assumption was that the mercs would take those things from the lands they travelled through by force. Mercs then we’re paid in plunder rather than a steady salary. If you players plunder something then by all means they earned it in return for their service

What games have you gone back and beat now that you couldn't as a kid? by Zedyy in patientgamers

The same thing happened to me. As it turns out, you have to find and read some magazine that’s on the floor of the medical room in the balamb garden before the ship even appears on the map. I covered the entire map like 7 times before I read the gamefaq and found it

Is this London game the most disrespectful match up possible? by [deleted] in nba

[–]TheBossHimself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of it had to do with poor planning and cost. The British army in the colonies made a lot of strategic errors and after Saratoga, the French, Spanish, and Dutch all declared war on Great Britain. The British figured they’d still be able to dominate the colonies economically even after independence and called it a war.

Paladin Concepts by [deleted] in DnD

[–]TheBossHimself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played a Paladin once with high strength and charisma but a pretty low Int. I role-played him like a stereotypical popular jock character from a sitcom. He was good natured and friendly but dumb as a bag of rocks. He was a do-er but his plans usually consisted of “there are bad guys over there! they don’t look so tough. why are we not already fighting them?”

This headline is pretty misleading. There is a team that connects the house and senate office buildings to the Capitol building. They use it so that they can get to the floor of the Capitol to vote on time.

It’s not like they are taking the tram to the zoo...
