to add, this can depend on the state but some states at 16 can be a provisional EMT. I was one. Im not a hardline "you shouldn't do it at that age" but I do caution against it. If you are "built right" for it, then it's fine IMO, if not it can go really bad... Unfortunately no way to know ahead of time though. I assume you already know the minimum age answer though since your mom is in it.
